Walk the City: Hastings, New Zealand

Hastings, New Zealand - Te Mata Peak/Maraetotara Falls/Pekapeka Wetlands/Oak Avenue/Rush Munro
Hastings was named the most beautiful small city in New Zealand in 2022. It is located on the Eastern North Island of New Zealand. Our weekend holiday in Hastings was spent on walking around the inner city and nature tripping.
The inner city is dotted with murals, sculptures, and free-standing wood carvings to highlight and celebrate its cultural heritage.
Te Mata Peak is one of the must-see places in Hastings. You can either walk or drive up to the top. There are different tracks to choose from and the tracks are well-signed. Birds chirping in the background is something pleasant to listen to at any point of time. We reached the summit and looked around, but it was hazy to the north. Instead we focused out attention to the paragliders. Our walk ended with a delicious meal at the Peak House Café.
Not far from Hastings is Maraetotara Falls, a popular summer sport for the locals and visitors. The track to the waterfall was easy but can get quite slippery when the track is wet. The water is clear and it would be an idyllic place to relax or swim during the summer season.
Peka Peka Wetlands was once used as an illegal dumpsite. Due to the combined efforts of different organisations this wetland has been restored. Pekapeka is one of the few remaining wetlands of its type in Hawkes Bay.
Oak Avenue (Ormond Road) is a road lined up with Oak trees planted in 1874. It was lovely to drive under the canopy of these historic trees.
We could not leave Hastings without sampling the Rush Munro ice cream. We love that they make their ice cream using natural ingredients.
