Exploring Finland's Smaller Towns - Kotka, Hamina, Porvoo, Repovesi National Park, Valkmusa Park

As some of you may know I’ve just spent a quarter of a year in the Scandinavian country of Finland for a work assignment. Slow travel is different than what I’m used too but I was really happy to get back to exploring and excited to show you guys about my adventures there.

What started off as 2 - 4 weeks in Finland for work turned into 3 months of exploring and adventure, and of course work also. But with the extended amount of time, I was able to see parts of the country that I definitely wouldn’t have otherwise.

This video is about the smaller cities that were closer to where I lived in Kotka, Hamina, Porvoo, and a few national parks Valkmusa and Repovesi.

I hope you enjoy the video!

This is Hamina in Finland

Hamina is a town and a municipality of Finland. It is located approximately 145 km (90 mi) east of the country's capital Helsinki, in the Kymenlaakso region, and formerly the province of Southern Finland. The municipality's population is 19,844 and covers an area of 1,155.14 square kilometres (446.00 sq mi), of which 545.66 km2 (210.68 sq mi) is water. The municipal language of Hamina is Finnish.

Highway 7 (E18) is the town's road connection to Helsinki, after it was upgraded to a continuous motorway in September 2014. Hamina is also one of the most important harbors of Finland, the Port of Hamina-Kotka. The port specializes in forest products and the transit of cargo to Russia. One of Google's five European data centers is situated in Hamina.

Vehkalahti was as a municipality first mentioned in 1336. At the proposal of Count Peter Brahe, the area surrounding the Vehkalahti church (today St. Mary's Church) received its charter in 1653 through the establishment of Vehkalahden Uusikaupunki (Veckelax Nystad in Swedish, The New Town of Vehkalahti). The town was later destroyed during the Great Northern War in 1712.

Plan of the Fredrikshamn fortress town (1723) by Axel Löwen
As the commercially vibrant city of Vyborg was lost to Russia in 1721, Fredrikshamn (named in 1723 in the honor of King Frederick I of Sweden) was dedicated to replace it. The town, hitherto a small domestic port with restricted trading privilege's, was granted extensive rights to conduct foreign trade. The Finnish speaking population soon abbreviated the name og the town to Hamina. The reconstruction of the town was completed between 1722 and 1724. The star-shaped fortress and the circular town plan, designed by Axel Löwen, were based on Central European and Italian Renaissance concepts from the 16th century. Fortress towns with a circular street plan like this are quite rare; one example is Palmanova in Italy.

In 1743, Hamina was surrendered to Russia, after the Russo–Swedish War, 1741–1743, and the town of Loviisa was the next Swedish candidate for an Eastern-Finnish trade center. Hamina became a Russian frontier town, for which a fortress was desirable.

The Treaty of Fredrikshamn (1809), by which Sweden ceded Finland, including parts of the province of Lappland and the Åland Islands, was signed in Hamina. Thus Sweden was split, and the eastern half was formed into the Grand Duchy of Finland, an autonomous part of the Russian Empire. In 1812, the previously conquered territories known as Old Finland (including Hamina) were joined to the Grand Duchy.

Hamina Cadet School was founded in 1819 and was in operation until 1903. In 1920 the Reserve Officer School began in the same facilities.

Because the town was founded next to the Vehkalahti Church, the municipal center had always been inside the town borders. Vehkalahti and Hamina were consolidated in 2003, and the old coat of arms was replaced with Vehkalahti's coat of arms. The old coat of arms was readopted in January 2013.

Main sights
1) Town Hall: Originally built in 1798, it was renovated by Carl Ludvig Engel in 1840.

2) Reserve Officer School: The site which trains reserve officers in the Army Academy of the Finnish Army

3) Town Museum: It is located in a building where King Gustav III of Sweden and Empress Catherine II of Russia met in 1783.

4) Shopkeeper's Museum

5) Google Data Center: (former Stora Enso pulp factory)

6) Hamina Fortress: Built in the 18th century, it is one of the star forts in Finland. The corners of the fortress form six bastions, named after towns in Finland. The Central Bastion was added at the end of the 18th century, and is currently used for cultural events.

7) The tallest flagpole in Europe

Siinä kuullaan Kymi Sinfonietan musiikkia, jonka on säveltänyt Panu Aaltio.

HEADING FOR FINNISH LAKELAND | LOVIISA & HAMINA 🇫🇮

My amazing road trip through Finnish Lakeland starts with a drive along Finland’s south coast calling in at Loviisa and Hamina, two interesting towns between Helsinki & the Russian border.
🇫🇮 See more of my travel vlogs from Finland here →

Finnish Lakeland (Järvi-Suomi) is the largest lake district in Europe containing over 50,000 lakes and an almost endless landscape of lush forestry. My road trip in Finland’s far east will capture plenty of spectacular driving routes, hiking trails and nature. First though, we’ve got to get there!

I hired a car from Helsinki Airport and set off for Porvoo, it was late so I booked some accommodation (Motelli On Line Porvoo) to get a good night's rest. The next morning I was up early and back on the road driving along Finland’s incredible south coast towards Loviisa and Hamina.

I took a short self guided tour of Loviisa as soon as I arrived, parking close to the Stone Park in the Old Lower Town. From there I wandered through a cemetery and up onto a trail that followed the Eteläharju ridge to a red iron-made, art nouveau styled observation tower (Kukkukivi Näköalatorni). Of course I couldn’t resist climbing up to the top!

I headed into the new town and marvelled at the mighty Loviisa Church (Loviisan Kirkko) which was close to the Town Hall overlooking Loviisa Market Square (Loviisan Tori). On my way out of town I stopped off at Loviisa Fort at Garnison Park, a defensive structure built by the Swedes after their defeat in the Russo-Swedish War 1741-1743.

I continued driving east until I arrived on the circular streets of Hamina Finland - and took a quick look at the Largest Flag of Finland (Suurlippu), the so-called Monumental Flag of Finland. Hamina was built on a radial ring layout which makes walking along the streets kinda cool if not confusing!

Literally in the centre of Hamina is the beautiful yellow Hamina Town Hall (Haminan Raatihuone) which just happens to be across the street from the wonderful St John’s Church (Johanneksen Kirkko). I walked over to Hamina Market (Haminan Tori) where I spotted the Ukrainian national flag proudly flying on top of a circular tower.

My final stop was the historic Hamina Fortress (Haminan Linnoitus) which doubles up as a concert venue and the home of the Hamina Christmas Market during the winter months. According to my sources, the fortification’s casemates double up as the stalls of the market - which is a pretty neat idea if you ask me!

HAMEENLINNA, FINLAND | Gateway to EUROPE'S LARGEST Lake District (Finnish Lakeland)

HAMEENLINNA, FINLAND: Exploring one of Finland’s oldest cities & walking around the beautiful lakes & castles situated on the edge of Europe’s largest lake district - Finnish Lakeland.

Visiting Hameenlinna is a straightforward and relatively cheap train ride from either Helsinki or Tampere. I came from the latter with plans to see as much as I could in one well executed day trip. My aim was to spend most of the day in the city and then perhaps a few hours down by the lakes and forests of Aulanko Nature Reserve - enjoying the tranquillity that the great outdoors can bring.

After arriving at one of Finland’s oldest railway stations I headed down to the lake and picked up a well maintained trail that led me through the trees, across the wetland and past several abandoned buildings. There were some wonderful view points as I followed the lakes shoreline, several looking out across to the brick built Hameenlinna Castle and others equipped with tables and seating to just watch the vast waterline of the lake. There were plenty of birds chirping and leaves falling - even an express train or two passing.

After an hour or so I arrived at a magnificent granite castle that served as the entrance to the Aulanko Nature Reserve & Historical Site. The sign listed more castles, swan lakes, hiking trails, bird watching areas, play zones, caves and swimming places so I headed inside. I weaved across a few trails until I got lost in the woods, and just when I was about to re-examine the map I stumbled upon a spectacular lookout tower and viewpoint looking out over the lakes and forest below. It has to be seen to be believed! I was really enjoying my trip to Hameenlinna.

Having spent a few more hours than I planned at Aulanko I walked back towards the city, this time I crossed a fairly modern-looking railway bridge and followed a trail on the other side of the lake back to Häme Castle. I spent an hour exploring the brick structure and learning about its history before continuing on towards the city centre of Hameenlinna.

There I enjoyed walking by a number of old wooden houses and a much more contemporary church (Hämeenlinnan kirkko) that dominated the main square. I also caught up with the statue of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius and gazed upon his childhood home that still stands in the heart of the city.
