Tourism Italy : Visit Umbria, 8 best places to discover

Green heart of Italy

Often compared to Tuscany for its landscapes, Umbria, thanks to the Apennines, has more relief. This region is also better preserved from tourism and has a more secret and authentic facet.

The main tourist attractions of the region are the villages, very well restored but still very medieval, as well as the architecture and monuments of the cities of art.

Moreover the region is characterised by large hills, mountains (the highest point in the region is Monte Vettore at 2,476 metres (8,123 feet)), and valley : the Umbrian valley ( Valle Umbra ), and the Tiber Valley ( Val Tiberina ) this is why the green heart of Italy will appeal to all nature lovers.

Let us know in the comment which place in Umbria would you like to discover first ?

Gubbio, Umbria, Italy

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
We are visiting Gubbio, one of the great, medieval, stone towns of Italy. We're in Umbria and fortunate to be walking with local expert, Isabella, who is going to take us around and show us all of these great sights of this amazing town of Gubbio. It's about 1000 years old but it has origins that go back 3000 years. It's really got a lot of history.
Most travelers, even if you're very experienced, have never heard of the town of Gubbio in Umbria in Italy. Well we are going to take you there.
We were lucky to meet Isabella, who is not a professional tour guide. She's a sommelier and journalist, but she's born and raised in Gubbio and very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about her hometown. She's going to take us on a walking tour, ending up with dinner at home with her family. And it was just a great evening with family and friends at home in Gubbio, one of the nicest nights I've ever had in my travels.
This is an assembled version of several shorter movies previously uploaded.

Best Places in Umbria

Umbria offers its visitors wonderful landscapes and an unspoiled way of life. The atmosphere is relaxed, the architectural monuments crumble away charmingly - here, away from the big tourist crowds in Rome or Florence, you can still find the original, authentic Italy. Full of friendly people who warmly welcome their guests. Let’s take a look at Umbria's greatest sights. #umbria #italy #bestplaces

Places to see in ( Gubbio - Italy )

Places to see in ( Gubbio - Italy )

Gubbio is a medieval town in central Italy. Its Colle Eletto cable car climbs to Mount Ingino, with the 5-naved Sant’Ubaldo Basilica and views of the Apennines Mountains. In town, Gubbio Cathedral contains 16th-century paintings and a baroque chapel. Inside the Gothic Consoli Palace, with its crenellated top, is the Civic Museum. Displays here include the Iguvine Tablets, 7 bronze slabs with ancient inscriptions.

While most of Umbria feels soft, warm and rounded by the millennia, Gubbio is angular, sober, imposing and medieval through and through. Perched on the steep slopes of Monte Ingino, the Gothic buildings wend their way up the hill towards Umbria's closest thing to a theme-park ride: its open-air funivia (cable car). The town's stunning preservation will floor you; and wandering its evocative streets, alleyways and staircases elicit textbook Italian dreaming.

Hugging the lower slopes of the Mount Ingino is the Italian medieval town of Gubbio. You may recognize the name for its association with St Francis who, it is said, went up the mountain to meet the wolf who was terrorizing the townsfolk. Whether this is truth or legend, we don't know but the town is alive and thriving.

Stroll through the narrow streets and marvel at the stone work of these ancient buildings including the curious doors of the dead. These are a secondary door which is so named as it's thought when someone died the body was brought through this alternate door. Superstition played a big part in medieval times and the second door could be due to this. It is also believed that if you circle the font in the town's square 3 times you will go crazy. Although we can laugh and joke about these superstitions now, there was a time where these were believed.

The main plaza is called Giordano Bruno's square which was named after the Dominican Friar who was burned at the stake for heresy. This was for a combination of his lack of belief in many deeply held Catholic ideals and his seemingly far fetched astrological ideas. He believed the stars were the suns for other planets and solar systems. This we now know is the case but back then you had to tow the line or risk becoming toast.

The Palazzo dei Consoli is a huge building, akin to a medieval skyscraper. Its external staircase graciously spills out into the Piazza Grande welcoming the people to come and explore further. From here take a cable car up to the church of Ubaldo who is the city's patron saint. His corpse is housed in a glass case in the church. It is here that the famous candle race or Corsa dei Ceri is run.

( Gubbio - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Gubbio . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Gubbio - Italy

Palazzo dei Consoli, built 700 years ago, is the grandest building in Gubbio, a well-preserved medieval town in Umbria, Italy. The palace is enormous, reaching nearly 250 feet high like a skyscraper from the Middle Ages, and contains the main art and history museum of Gubbio. Our local friend Isabella Ceccarelli brings us also to the Piazza Grande and the City Hall, the Palazzo del Podesta.

Umbria, Italy | The Traditional Children's Feast in Gubbio: La Festa dei Ceri Piccoli

Umbria, Italy | The Traditional Children's Feast in Gubbio: La Festa dei Ceri Piccoli
Gubbio, Italy has two traditional medieval feasts in May. La Festa dei Ceri (Ceri Feast) is held on 15th May each year. On this occasion, three monumental wooden structures, surmounted by statues of the town’s three patron saints of the arts, are carried by ceraioli, in a procession, running through the streets on a 4-km journey that climbs to the top of Monte Igino to place the ceri inside the Basilica di Sant'Ubaldo. The streets are decorated in the colours of the three saints: the yellow of Sant’Ubaldo (patron of the town and protector of masons and stonecutters), the blue of S. Giorgio (protector of traders and artisans) and the black of Sant’Antonio (protector of farmers and students). La Festa dei Ceri is repeated on the 2nd of June, the Republic Day, when the children have their own feast named La Festa dei Ceri Piccoli.
Famous for its Roman ruins and beautiful Piazza Grande well known from the TV series Don Matteo, Gubbio is much more than that. Gubbio is one of the most beautiful towns in Umbria, Italy so rich in art, history, traditions and nature. It is a lovely place with unique charm and personality which makes the visitor to adore the medieval town. Its noble towers, beautiful churches, old squares, narrow streets are a real spectacle for the visitor who suddenly feels immersed back in the heart of the Italian Middle Ages and Renaissance. Gubbio is a medieval town in the far northeastern part of the Italian Province of Perugia in Regione Umbria, central Italy. The town has a beautiful historical center with a wonderful medieval appearance. The main tourist attractions include medieval monuments such as Palazzo dei Consoli (1332–1346), the 15th-century Palazzo Ducale, the 12th-century Cathedral (Duomo) with the precious art piece of the Umbrian school representing the Christ sculptured in wood over the altar, the 13th century church dedicated to San Francesco with frescoes in the left side dating from the 15th century. The medieval town center has several scenic terraces with breathtaking views of the surroundings. Many houses in the old town of Gubbio date back in the 14th and 15th centuries, and were originally the dwellings of wealthy merchants. The history of the town includes one of the most famous episodes in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi when the Saint allegedly tamed the wolf of Gubbio and made a reconciliation between the inhabitants of the town and the wolf.
