Located on a plain in the middle of its province, the municipality borders with Vertientes, Florida, Esmeralda, Sierra de Cubitas, Minas, Sibanicú and Jimaguayú.

The clay pots in Camagüey
The symbol of the city of Camagüey is the clay pot or tinajón, used to capture rain water to be used later, keeping it fresh. Clay pots are everywhere, some as small as a hand, some large enough for two people to stand up in, either as monuments or for real use. Local legend has it that if you drink water from a girl's personal tinajón, you will fall in love with the girl and never leave her. The main secondary education institutions are the University of Camagüey and the Instituto Pedagógico de Camagüey.
In July 2008, the old town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In 2004, the municipality of Camagüey had a population of 324,921.[2] With a total area of 1,106 km2 (427 sq mi),[1] it has a population density of 293.8/km2 (761/sq mi).

Hurricane Irma is an extremely powerful tropical cyclone that is currently making landfall in Cuba and is threatening the Southeastern United States. It is the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin outside the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, and is tied with the 1935 Labor Day hurricane as the strongest landfalling cyclone on record in the Atlantic basin as well as the strongest Atlantic hurricane since Wilma of 2005 in terms of maximum sustained winds, the most intense in terms of pressure since Dean in 2007, and the first of such intensity to make landfall anywhere in the Atlantic since Felix in 2007. Irma is also the first Category 5 hurricane on record to affect the northern Leeward Islands, and only the second hurricane on record to make landfall in Cuba at such an intensity, with the other being a hurricane in 1924. A typical Cape Verde hurricane,[1][2][3] Irma developed on August 30 near the Cape Verde Islands from a tropical wave that had moved off the west African coast two days prior. It is the ninth named storm, fourth hurricane, and second major hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season.[4][5][6]
Under favorable conditions, Irma rapidly intensified shortly after formation, becoming a Category 2 hurricane within a mere 24 hours. It became a Category 3 hurricane (and therefore a major hurricane) shortly afterward; however, the intensity fluctuated for the next several days due to a series of eyewall replacement cycles. On September 5, Irma became a Category 5 hurricane, and by early the next day, Irma reached peak intensity with 185 mph (295 km/h) winds and a minimum pressure of 914 mbar (914 hPa; 27.0 inHg). This ties it as the second-strongest Atlantic hurricane by wind speed, surpassed only by Allen of 1980 which reached wind speeds of 190 mph (305 km/h). Irma sustained these 185 mph (295 km/h) winds for 37 hours, surpassing Allen's record, which had sustained 180 mph (285 km/h) winds for 18 hours.[7] In addition, Irma achieved one of the longest durations of Category 5 strength winds ever on record.[8] Irma's low pressure also makes it the strongest tropical cyclone worldwide in 2017 so far.
It caused catastrophic damage in Barbuda, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, Anguilla and the Virgin Islands as a Category 5 hurricane

On day 10 I ran 30 kilometers past Guaimaro where we were staying for two nights for 54 kilometers total. It was a fairly uneventful day with the distance portion of it. However, when we got back to Guaimaro and went to dinner in El Magno again I had a curious interaction with a woman that I can only describe as being solicited by a Cuban prostitute. After she made clear there was going to be no money for sex she mentioned her friend liked me and that she didn't know what would happen later. Oh yea and her husband is Canadian. Though amused I politely declined for various reasons. I have nothing against the woman. Prostitution is officially illegal in Cuba but given the stagnant economy that is the only choice for a lot of poor women.
On day 11 I finally ran to and through Camaguey feeding some dogs along the way and doing my first sixty plus km day with 61 kilometers total. When we returned to the city I made sure to ask a favor of our hosts to walk us around the city a bit and to make sure we see the Camaguey chess club where my co-worker and buddy Ivette Rubio grew up ( hence the significance) Hola Ivette!

После Я попросил хозяина комнаты показать мне город и посетил таким образом шахматный клуб в котором училась моя коллега и приятельница, Ивет Рубио. Привет Ивет!

👉EL VALLE DE LOS INGENIOS, ubicado en la Provincia de Sancti Spíritus, en el centro de Cuba, es una extensa planicie de forma triangular que abarca alrededor de 250 kilómetros cuadrados y comprende en su interior los valles de San Luis, Agabama-Méyer y Santa Rosa, además de la llanura costera del sur, delta del río Manatí. Junto con la ciudad de Trinidad, fue reconocido por la UNESCO como Patrimonio de la Humanidad en el año 1988.
Antiguamente, la principal vía de entrada que dirigía hacia el Valle de Ingenios estaba dispuesta en la Plaza de Santa Ana, ubicada en la zona más céntrica de la ciudad de Trinidad, concretamente a unos 500 metros de la Plaza Mayor. Fomentando una de las regiones azucareras más grandes de la época, se asentaron en el valle desde el siglo XVII hasta el XIX, la aristocracia criolla, que se dedicaba a la industria azucarera en gran escala, entre 75 mil y 140 mil arrobas de caña por caballería, basadas en el trabajo esclavo.
El valle cuenta con 65 sitios arqueológicos, incluidas 13 casas haciendas, algunas de las cuales cuentan aún con sus calderas, torres, sistemas industriales de la época y vestigios propios de la producción azucarera, de los siglos del XVIII al XIX. Entre los antiguos ingenios podemos encontrar:

In 2016 we traveled to Cuba, and after three nights in Havana, we cruised the coast from Havana to Guanahacabibes National Park, Cayo Large del Sur, Puerto de Casilda & Trinidad, and Cienfuegos. Our tour then took a bus to Santa Clara and the Che Guevara Museum. This twelfth video begins with a few local artisans and some interesting portraits of locals. We take a peak inside a Cathedral and then move to a mansion that show the opulence in the midst of poverty in pre-revolutionary Cuba. We visit several restaurants and bars to hear local musicians, and we return to our ship and prepare to depart from Puerto de Casilda.

Valle de los Ingenios Highlights
Valle de los Ingenios, also named Valley de los Ingenios or Valley of the Sugar Mills, is a series of three interconnected valleys about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) outside of Trinidad, Cuba. The three valleys, San Luis, Santa Rosa, and Meyer, were a center for sugar production from the late 18th century until the late 19th century.
At the peak of the industry in Cuba there were over fifty sugar cane mills in operation in the three valleys, with over 30,000 slaves working in the mills and on the sugar cane plantations that surrounded them.
The entire area covers 270 km2 (100 sq mi) and includes the sites of over 70 former sugar mills.
Sugar production was an important industry for Cuba from the earliest settlement by the Spanish, who introduced sugar cane to the island in 1512, and trade in the commodity enriched Trinidad and the surrounding areas. The island became the world's foremost producer of sugar during the late 18th and 19th centuries, when sugar production was the main industry. The climate and soil were perfect for the cultivation of sugar cane, and good ports and interior connections facilitated transport and exportation of the refined sugar. To prevent the sugar from spoiling, rapid transport was necessary, and to this end a special railway line was laid down through the valley in the late 1880s, connecting the Valle de los Ingenios with Trinidad and the port at Casilda, 6 km (4 mi) from Trinidad, on the coast. The valleys are provided with water by several rivers, among them Rio Agabama, Rio Caracusey, Rio de Ay, and Rio Tayaba.
Due to the virtual extinction of the native Cubans through contact with diseases brought by the European settlers and attrition though their poor treatment as slaves, it was necessary for the Spanish plantation owners to import slaves from Africa to work in the sugar cane fields and in the mills. The abolition of slavery by the Spanish in 1820 made the practice of importing slaves more difficult; but it was not until the Wars of Independence in the 19th century that the economic dominance of the area came to an end, as many of the sugar mills were abandoned or became run down.
In 1988, Valle de los Ingenios and neighbouring Trinidad were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Although most of the sugar mills are in ruins, intact structures endure at some sites, including Guachinango, where the plantation house remains, and the plantation of Manaca Iznaga, where the owner's house, a tower and some barracones, the original slave quarters, still stand. Although the barracones are now used as housing and are in poor repair, the house (which has been converted into a restaurant) and the Iznaga Tower are well maintained.
The 45 metre (147 ft) tower was constructed sometime in 1816 by the owner, Alejo Maria Iznaga y Borrell [1]. According to experts, the bell that formerly hung on top of the tower announced the beginning and the end of the work day for the slaves, as well as the times for prayers to the Holy Virgin in the morning, midday, and afternoon. It was also used to sound an alarm in case of fire or slave escape. The height and magnificence of the tower served to display Iznaga's power over his slaves and his stature in the sugar industry and local society; at one time it was the tallest structure in Cuba. A recognized landmark of the region, the Iznaga Tower testifies to the area's flourishing material culture in the Spanish colonial period. The large bell now rests at the foot of the tower.
