GRYTVIKEN WHALING STATION, SOUTH GEORGIA - TOP 10 THINGS TO SEE
Explore Grytviken - a tiny settlement on South Georgia in the South Atlantic. It was formerly a large whaling station (now abandoned). The settlement was established in 1904 by Norwegian Antarctic explorer Carl Anton Larsen on the long-used site of former whaling settlements. Grytviken is built on sheltered, flat land and has a good supply of fresh water. The whaling station closed in December 1966 when dwindling whale stocks made it uneconomical to stay open. A simple lesson in economics: Kill most of the whales. Fewer whales. Little whale processing. No profit. The settlement has become a popular attraction for Antarctic cruise lines, with many tourists visiting the resting places of polar explorers Sir Ernest Shackleton and Frank Wild in Grytviken's graveyard as well as the museum, the historical gallery, the old whaling machinery, the church, the shipwrecks and the animals. The whalers used every part of the whales – the blubber, meat, bones and guts were rendered to extract the oil and the bones and meat were turned into fertilizer. Approximately 300 men worked at the station during its prime years, operating during the southern summer from October to March. A few men remained over the winter to maintain the boats and factory. Every one to three months, a transport ship would bring in key supplies - and take away the oil.
Grytviken is currently a popular stop for cruise ships visiting Antarctica

Sir Ernest Shackleton one of the GREATEST explorers, South Georgia ( AT THE END OF THE WORLD)
Grytviken was the largest whaling station on South Georgia, part of the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic.
Sir Ernest Shackleton visited South Georgia several times during his Antarctic expeditions. Shackleton died unexpectedly in 1922 from a heart attack at the beginning of a new Antarctic expedition. His widow chose South Georgia as his final resting place. He was buried at Grytviken and a toast (with Whisky preferably) at his grave is a tradition with travellers.🥂

Ocean Adventurer Antarctic Cruise: Grytviken Whaling Station South Georgia
(Filmed before Pandemic)
Very few expedition ships sail to South Georgia filled with wonderful sights. TIP: It is also more expensive than the typical 1 week cruise down to the Antarctic Peninsula.
Grytviken was the largest whaling station on South Georgia. From 1904-1966, the British hauled whales ashore into huge processing plants, which ran night and day. It is temporarily inhabited during the summer by a few staff who manage the South Georgia Museum and small shop. Yay. One of the few shopping opportunities in the Antarctic!

EXPLORING SOUTH GEORGIA: FORTUNA BAY, DRYGALSKI FJORD & GRYTVIKEN ON VIKING OCTANTIS
My video takes you to South Georgia - a remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean - part of the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It lies around 870 mi east of the Falkland Islands. South Georgia is around 106 miles long and has a maximum width of 22 miles. The terrain is mountainous with the northern coast indented with numerous bays (like Fortuna Bay) and fjords (like Drygalski Fjord). Discovered by Europeans in 1675, South Georgia had no indigenous population due to its harsh climate and remoteness. Captain James Cook in HMS Resolution made the first landing, survey and mapping of the island and on January 17th, 1775. He claimed it a British possession, naming it Isle of Georgia after King George III. Throughout its history, South Georgia served as a whaling and seal hunting base - the biggest was (now abandoned) Grytviken.
