Things to do in Livingston TX: Texas Travel Series
I originally came across Livingston while looking for fun getaways close to Houston. While doing my research, I came across a castle that you could sleep in, and after that I had to see if I could put together a full itinerary of things to do in Livingston TX. Turns out there are plenty of fun things to do in Livingston with all of the nature, walking around the town, and enjoying some of the local eats!

Visiting Lake Livingston State Park near Houston, Texas, USA
#statepark #texas #texasstateparks #houston
Hello and welcome to Traveling with Luigi!
In this episode my wife and I will visit Lake Livingston State Park in Texas!
Where is Lake Livingston?
It is located to the north east of Houston George Bush Intercontinental airport, about 1 hr 10 min drive. Lake Livingston is one of the largest lakes in the state of Texas, with 83000 surface acres
For a fee under $10 per adult you can enter this park for the day.
Lake Livingston State Park opened in 1977. And it is located on 635 acres along the southeastern edge of Lake Livingston in Polk County.
There are six trails in this park for a total of 5.7 miles of hiking and biking paths.
Let me share with you a bit about the history of lake Livingston . A dam of the Trinity River created this lake that provides water for the city of Houston and other East Texas cities. It is ideal for boating and fishing because of its size and constant level.
The Trinity River and surrounding valley have been home to a variety of cultures for centuries. Humans have long known about the valley’s abundant natural resources.
In the 1800s the Trinity River valley offered good land for cotton farming. What’s more, the river provided convenient means to transport cotton to the port cities of Houston and Galveston. In present day timber is the primary product of the area and is mainly transported through this river to those port cities.
Your options for spending the night include campsites from $14-30 depending on the utilities available, Screened shelters for $35. At Lake
Livingston State Park, you can swim (be aware if alligators and swim only in designated areas), fish, boat, hike, bird sighting, camp, picnic, mountain bike, geocache and study nature.
Nearly 50 inches (127cm) of rain falls annually in this area. Mild temperatures average 51F (11C) degrees in the winter and 81F (27C) degrees in the summer. Highs in the summer sometimes reach 100F (38C) degrees. But don’t worry; you can cool off in Lake Livingston!
The park is home to small mammals such as armadillos, raccoons, opossums and southern flying squirrels. White-tailed deer frequent the park, and there are occasional sightings of bobcats and coyotes.
As for fish, crappie are active in the spring and early summer, while bluegill and channel catfish bite along the shoreline year-round. You can also Fish for white, striped and largemouth bass from spring through fall. White bass are especially plentiful and grow quite large.
There is a group hall for gatherings of up to 50 people $125 per day, with Air conditioned, heater, outdoor grill, restrooms, tables, chairs, picnic tables and is wheelchair accessible, everything you need to have a party!
As you you will see the sunsets in Texas are beautiful! We don’t’ seem to have enough of them.
Thank you for watching and HAPPY TRAVELS!

Video of Lake Livingston, TX from Rocco
Rocco 's Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Excellent campground
This camp ground checks every box for us. There’s full hook ups or basic sites for a low price. The sites are spaced apart with lots of trees. The trails are wide and well kept. The lake is huge. We were here in February and it was maybe half full or less. Very quiet. Dog friendly. Mild weather. Really nice place!

Video of Lake Livingston State Park, TX from Rachel W.
Rachel W.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ It’s all about the lake
Lake Livingston State Park is a fantastic state park for water activities. The fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding is all fantastic.
Campsites: The sites were all well maintained with the best spots being in Piney Shores & Red Oak. We were in spot #69. It had a great view but lacked in flat playing space for young children and hammock trees.
Trails: There were a few trails in the park, none of which were all that long. The main Trinity Trace Trail was flat dirt, good for young bikers. Though trails are short, they connect so you could do a few trails for a longer run/hike if you so desired.
Bathrooms: Each campground loop has one bathroom and shower. They can be a bit of a walk if you don’t have a close site. They appear to be older but maintained and cleaned well enough.
Park Specific Activities: Getting on the water was awesome, it’s the largest lake in Texas, so lots to explore. Fishing was fantastic. We caught bass, perch and catfish and lots of them! Getting in the lake left some to be desired. The bottom has many large rocks, tree stumps and is very mossy. Swimming can be fun but a little dangerous and slippery. The duck pond and frog pond are nothing to get excited about. We saw no birds in the bird blind and the frog pond is so small you almost can’t see it. We did hear a frog though.
Other: Connected to the park store they had a small educational space for young kids with a functioning beehive. The kids (ages 2-6) loved it. The park store is not open Mondays and Tuesdays. Kayak, canoe and paddle board rentals were only Thursday to Sunday 8:30-3:30. $10-20/rental. The pool was not functioning when we went in August 2018. They have a small amphitheater and near by a room available for rent which can have 50 guests. It was air conditioned and had nice hardwood floors.
In Summary: We would absolutely recommend it for water activities and relaxation. It’s a beautiful spot! We wouldn’t recommend it for just birding or hiking but ...

GROVETON TX.
We drove out to Groveton Tx. to meet up with family. So much peace and quiet, I flew close to the area we were in and tried not to fly over into other peoples property. This was my 1st video where I actually flew around instead of hovering in place. The day ended with a beautiful sunset and some cool pictures.

San Jacinto Day Festival
We invite you to join us as we go take in the San Jacinto Festival...a celebration of a pivotal point in Texas, and U.S. History…the Battle of San Jacinto. Hope you enjoy our brief look at this event.
Every April in Houston, Texans (and others) gather at the San Jacinto Monument for a one-day event that commemorates the Battle of San Jacinto.
Like any festival, the San Jacinto Day Festival and Battle Reenactment; there’s a variety of performers, vendors, food trucks and to this is added a variety of reenactors, displays and more.
Now, I know we didn’t see it all…and this was my first outing shooting video with the GoPro, so it was a learning curve…painful at that…unfortunately I missed some great audio moments because of how the GoPro works. Ah well, just chalk it up to learning! (Note to self...turn GoPro on at side main button, THEN use the capture button on top to stop and start video!)
Here’s just a few of the 60+ Festival and Reenactor groups and vendors we saw:
Texas Naval Squadron
Sons of the Republic
Buffalo Soldiers
Texas Camel Connection
Black Beaver, Delaware Blanket Trader
North Harris County Dulcimers
HSPVA Mariachi Los Pasajeros
Fred Rusk & the Zydeco Hi-Steppers
Hope you enjoy our brief look at San Jacinto Day Festival and Battle Reenactment. If you want to learn more, just check the links below!
