149 l My unplanned visit to Groveport, Ohio. USA l ThatGuyJunJun

In this video...we are in Groveport, Ohio. USA, a suburb of Columbus. I came here to visit a museum but was unable to proceed due to a no video policy. You have to go by their rules but I had to find another video idea to capture in the moment. So as we often do, I decided instead to capture a drive through of Groveport. The city has just over 6000 residents and is generally regarded as a small and quiet Columbus suburb. I also saw there was another metro park in the area that we can cross off the list of 20 Columbus Metro Parks we have visited. Not the video I planned as I was looking forward to the museum visit but sometimes you have to adjust and go with what you have. Hope you enjoy this quick drive through of Groveport, Ohio. Thanks for coming along :)

A Walk with The Relic: Groveport 175- Front St and Groveport Schools

Okay, on this Walk I am still in Groveport OH for the small city's 175th Anniversary of its founding in 1847. Trough some of this video I do talk a bit, mostly reminiscing about the past, so I hope my accent doesn't get too annoying :). I start out walking on Blacklick St. from Blacklick Park that I visited in the last video (Lock 22), following the rails of the old Interurban that used that used to run from Canal Winchester, through Groveport and up to Columbus. The Interurban is no more, but the rails still exist down Blacklick toward College St.

However, I'm heading for Front St. I cut to the old railroad that goes by the old farmer's store that used to be open when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s. Back then Groveport was more of a farming village, with trucks hauling the harvest to this location. There used to be a big silo on the property, but that's gone now. Not much call for it or the store, long since closed, now that the farms have been turned into warehouses and such :(

From there I walk south on Front, where many of the nicer, older houses in town are. It's also fully paved with bricks, just like the old days. I'm heading to the second stop on the Groveport History tour, to pick up my next card. That takes me to Main St, which has almost nothing like I remember from my youth. The old IGA grocery store is gone, and Birch's Bar burned up in a fire back in 1989 so it was rebuilt into something more modern. Seriously, when I was a kid, we all wondered how the old, rickety structure lasted as long as it did :)

But upon my arrival at Main St., I cross and turn left to head towards the historical school district, which when I went to those schools was the Groveport Elementary School and Groveport Middle School. Things on the other side of Main sure have changed; the gas stations are gone, the old dentist who didn't believe in using antiesthetic to remove tooth chips isn't there :) and there's now an Ace Hardware, all nice and modern.

But the schools? On the outside they are pretty much the same as they were back 50+ years ago. At least structurally. After getting my card I decided to get a closer look at the schools I spent K-part of 8th Grade in. Up to 1968 the Middle School was actually the High School. In 1968 the new school was built on Hamilton Rd, and this was converted to the Middle School. Funny thing....the High School (which is not in this area so I can't visit that) was torn down a few years ago, and replaced with a nice, new, modern structure.

Sure curious how much THAT cost the taxpayers :)

But I continued my walk down past the Middle School, then the Elementary School, then decided to check out the old playground, where I whiled away many a recess.

Maybe old isn't the right word here. Aside from the monkey bars and a couple of swing sets, it has many more things to play on, and places for sports even! There was a rumor back then that the Groveport Cruisers' mascot was buried under a rock in a small, wooded area in the corner of the playground...wonder if anyone bothered to confirm it? Food for thought...

After that, it was time to head to my next destination, which will be the Groveport Cemetery, the Log Cabin and another building, which is where the third, fourth and fifth cards await. However, I will upload that video for this coming Saturday.

Remember, if you like these videos, Like and Subscribe! I post new content every Wednesday and Saturday at 7pm, and occasionally extra videos as well. And as always, Thanks for Watching!

I Found Every Ohio Historical Marker in Groveport in 2023

Welcome to this exciting video exploring the historical markers in Groveport, Ohio. In this video, we will take a tour of some of the most important landmarks in the city that tell the stories of its rich history. So, let's start our journey in our mini-episode covering Franklin County, focusing on Groveport!

Our first stop is the Groveport Log House, which is located at 551 West Main Street. The house was built in 1835 and is one of the oldest surviving log houses in the area. The house was originally built by Samuel Butterfield, one of the earliest settlers in the area, and was later owned by the Grove family. The Groveport Log House is now open to the public and serves as a museum, showcasing the life and times of the early settlers in Groveport.

Next on our list is Lock 22 in Groveport, which is located along the Ohio and Erie Canal. The lock was built in 1831 and played an important role in the transportation of goods and materials throughout the state. The lock is now a designated historical landmark and is open to the public for tours. Visitors can learn about the history of the canal and the important role it played in the development of Groveport and other nearby towns.

Moving on, we come to the Interurban Railway in Groveport. The railway was an important means of transportation for the people of Groveport and other nearby communities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The railway provided a fast and efficient way for people to travel to nearby towns and cities, and it helped to stimulate economic growth in the area. Although the railway is no longer in operation, its legacy lives on in the historical markers and artifacts that can be found throughout the city.

Another notable historical marker in Groveport is John S. Rarey and Cruiser. John S. Rarey was a horse trainer who gained fame in the mid-19th century for his unique approach to horse training. Cruiser was a horse that Rarey trained using his revolutionary methods, and the horse went on to become one of the most famous horses in history. Today, a statue of Cruiser stands in Groveport, serving as a reminder of the city's connection to the world of horse training and equestrian sports.

Finally, we come to Historic Groveport, which is a designated historic district in the city. The district features a collection of historic homes and buildings that date back to the 19th century, including the Groveport Town Hall and the Groveport Heritage Museum. Visitors to Historic Groveport can take a self-guided walking tour of the district, learning about the history and architecture of the buildings along the way.
