10 reasons to visit lake Baikal
Lake Baikal is located in the center of the Asian continent, on the border of the Irkutsk region and the Republic of Buryatia in the Russian Federation. The lake stretches from North-East to South-West on 620 km in the form of a giant Crescent. The width of the Baikal ranges from 24 to 79 km. the Bottom of lake Baikal in 1167 meters below sea level, and the mirror of its water - 455,5 meters above.
The water surface of lake Baikal - 31 722 km2 (excluding Islands), which is approximately equal to the area of such countries as Belgium or the Netherlands. Area of water surface Baikal ranked seventh among the largest lakes in the world.
The length of the coastline - 2100 km
The lake is situated in a hollow, surrounded on all sides by mountain ranges and hills. While the West coast is rocky and steep terrain of the East coast is flatter (in some places the mountains recede from the shore for tens of kilometers).

Listwjanka is located around seventy kilometres south east of Irkutsk. It is a prosperous village on the banks of Lake Baikal, the most popular holiday area in Siberia and where an extraordinarily journey begins on the Circum-Baikal Train.The train takes a full day to travel around the lake. The journey commences on an historic section of the railroad and one of the most difficult to be found on the Transsiberian Railroad that travels from Moscow to Vladivostock. Poloovinnaja is a small Siberian village is like something from a fairy tale with tiny wooden huts that nestle at the mouth of a river that flows into Lake Baikal. The appearance of the villagers is reminiscent of bygone times: men with long beards and large Burjatan caps, typical of their community.Lake Baikal originated around twenty million years ago, is one of the oldest lakes in the world and the largest fresh water reservoir on Earth. The length of the lake measures six hundred and thirty six kilometres, is between twenty seven and eighty kilometres wide and has a total surface area of almost thirty two thousand square kilometres! At the end of the journey is Sljudjanka, the only town in the world with a station constructed of marble. Indeed, the quarry lay nearby and so bringing it from elsewhere would have been more expensive. A stone memorial outside the station building greets arriving passengers and inside the station there is a final glimpse of the Transsiberian Railroad. The remarkable CIRCUM-BAIKAL Railroad – far more than a train journey!

Путешествие к древнему хребту. Шахтерский город Гремячинск возник в 1941 году. Активно строился он уже после войны немецкими военнопленными. Отсюда и характерная архитектура его старых районов – небольшие оштукатуренные дома. Среди бескрайней тайги в ясную погоду прямо с улиц города можно увидеть и главную достопримечательность района – хребет Басеги. Сегодня несколько гремячинских школьников отправятся в первое свое путешествие к древнему хребту. Средний Урал – череда древних, полуразрушенных временем хребтов, отдельных вершин, горных кряжей. Один из них – хребет Басеги. Состоит он из двух отдельных вершин – Северного и Среднего Басегов, а третий – Южный Басег еще сохранил вытянутую форму кряжа. На протяжении веков вся тайга на Урале была вырублена. Только вокруг хребта Басеги сохранился участок девственной тайги или пармы, как ее называют на Урале. Для тундрового пояса хребта Басеги характерны каменные реки – курумы. Среди камней можно встретить живородящую ящерицу. Она единственная из своего рода, кто не откладывает яйца, а рождает живых детенышей. На вершине Среднего Басега находится удивительное творение природы - каменные останцы. Такие природные идолы языческие народы почитали божествами. У коми-пермяков есть древнее родовое имя - Босег. Возможно, эти священные для них горы они назвали по имени рода – камнем Босега.
