Poplar Ave Great Harwood
A walk around Poplar Ave to see the Queen's Platinum Jubilee preparations for our street party on the 05/06/2022.
My Adventure to The Great Harwood Transport Festival 2022!
This one's been stuck in the backlog for a while! I also got sick for a week or two, preventing me from recording voice over, so I'm glad I finally got this out.
Back towards the start of September, Town And District hosted the first annual Great Harwood Transport Festival, at Great Harwood Showground in the heart of rural Lancashire, which played host to a whole collection of various vehicles, including trucks, cars, and buses.
It was a fantastic day, spent with a few friends, and ended even better, with a ride on Transdev's Hotline and Witchway services back to Manchester, to get home. Enjoy!

The LYR North Lancashire Loop Rose Grove, Great Harwood, Simonstone, Padiham. Lost Railways.
A walk along the Lancashire & Yorkshire Great Harwood Loop Line, this was also nicknamed the North Lancashire Loop Line. We start at Rose Grove, exploring the site of the engine shed, before moving on to Padiham and Padiham power station, our next stop is Simonstone before we move onto the marvelous Martholme viaduct and pit, our final station is Great Harwood and its many facilities before we complete the loop close to Blackburn station.
A very pleasant walk with a large amount of infrastructure still visible.
A brief History
The North Lancashire loop line was one of the most expensive lines built by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway costing almost £300,000. The line was built in two sections centred on Padiham. The line nine miles in length left the East Lancashire line close to Rose Grove at Padiham junction with stations built at Padiham, Simonstone and Great Harwood re joining the East Lancashire line at Great Harwood Junction about a mile out of Blackburn. Competition from the nearby canal, congestion at Accrington Station and a desire to stop other railway companies gaining a foothold in the area were some of the reasons for building the line but its construction gave the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway the opportunity to tap into the heavy cotton trade in Padiham and coal traffic from the numerous pits around the line. Parliamentary powers to build the first section of the line from Blackburn to Padiham were obtained on 18th May 1866. Sturgess Meek the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railways engineer was in charge of the project and appointed Mr Bowers as resident engineer. The contract to build this section was advertised in January 1870 and awarded to Thomas Stone and sons on 23 rd February 1870. The contract for all iron bridges were let to Yates foundry of Blackburn. The contract for the second section of track from Padiham to Rose Grove was advertised in November 1870 and awarded to James Gregson and Co on 5th April 1871. There were 39 bridges to construct on the line. Many problems occurred during the construction .There was a shortage of labour and some of the cuttings at Cunliffe, Norden and Great Harwood were massive. Materials from these excavations had to be moved further down the construction to build the massive embankments at Simonstone and Martholme.Old mine workings under the path of the railway gave problems with subsidence occurring during construction. Martholme viaduct was originally to be part built with wood but the discovery of coal during construction allowed the coal to be sold and pay for an all stone viaduct which still stands today. Towards the end of the contract for the Rose Grove Padiham section the contractor James Gregson went bust and the LYR Railway Company finished off the work with their own labour. The line between Padiham and Rose Grove opened for goods traffic on 1st July 1875 and for passenger traffic on 1st September 1876. The first passenger train left Padiham Station on 1st Sept 1876 at 06-45 with 70 passengers and one child. 10 travelled first class, 2 travelled second class and 35 third class. There was no major celebration just a small number of cheering children it was agreed that celebrations would take place when the line opened in its entirety. The first station master at Padiham was MR Thomas Garner. The line opened in its entirety on Monday 15th October 1877 and the first passenger train left Rose Grove at 07-35 arriving at Blackburn at 07-57. In the event there was no public celebration but the engineers and contractors representatives dined at the Bridge Inn Padiham where several toasts were proposed. The last scheduled passenger train left Blackburn at 10-47 pm on 30th November 1957 with just six passengers on board. The passenger service was officially withdrawn from 2nd December 1957. Great Harwood and Padiham stations were still used during Wakes Weeks for special traffic but this ceased in 1963. Goods traffic continued to use the line until 2nd November 1964 when the line closed to all traffic except that for Padiham B power station. Padiham station was demolished in 1967 and its coal sidings closed in 1968. Great Harwood station was demolished in 1965.

Places to see in ( Welwyn Garden City - UK )
Places to see in ( Welwyn Garden City - UK )
Welwyn Garden City is a town in Hertfordshire, England. It is located approximately 20 miles from Kings Cross, London. Welwyn Garden City was the second garden city in England and one of the first new towns.
Welwyn Garden City is unique in being both a garden city and a new town and exemplifies the physical, social and cultural planning ideals of the periods in which it was built. Welwyn Garden City experiences an oceanic climate (Köppen climate classification Cfb) similar to almost all of the United Kingdom. The town experiences warm summers and cold winters.
Welwyn Garden City was once well known as the home of the breakfast cereal Shredded Wheat, formerly made by Nabisco. The disused Shredded Wheat factory with its large white silos is a landmark on rail routes between London and the north of England. Welwyn Garden City's proximity to London makes it a convenient commuter town.
The 301 additionally connects both the nearby hospitals in Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City, while the 300 provides a direct link to recreational areas such as Stanborough Lakes in Welwyn Garden City and Verulamium Roman town in St Albans. Buses run every 15 minutes Monday-Friday, every 20 minutes Saturday, and hourly on Sunday. Additional bi-hourly service 314 is provided by Centrebus, connecting Welwyn to Codicote and Hitchin. The bus station is located very closely to the railway station too.
Uno buses serve the nearby towns of Hatfield, St Albans, Potters Bar, Hemel Hempstead, Watford and Barnet. Uno buses also serve further out into North London. Uno is the only provider in Welwyn Garden City to offer a regular double decker bus service, although not guaranteed, on the 601 service. Both the 601 and 653 also provide links to the University of Hertfordshire with the 601 leaving Welwyn Garden City station every 30 minutes on weekdays only and the 653 leaving every 20 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays.
The nearest railway station is Welwyn Garden City railway station in the town centre. Trains are operated by Great Northern and run every 20 minutes Monday to Friday south to London Moorgate and north to Hitchin and Stevenage, and every 30 minutes south to London Kings Cross and north to Cambridge or Peterborough with a weekend service of every 30 minutes on Saturday and Sunday south to London's Kings Cross and north to Cambridge. Welwyn Garden City is well-served by major arterial road routes, namely the A1(M) and the A414. The Great North Road also passes around it next to the A1(M).
Welwyn Garden City's Music Society gave its first concert in 1921 within weeks of the town's foundation; its choir and orchestra, led by James Ross, have performed a regular concert season in the town ever since. The town also boasts a Concert Club, which promotes chamber music recitals, and a Male Voice Choir. Welwyn Garden City Band was founded in 1934.
( Welwyn Garden City - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Welwyn Garden City . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Welwyn Garden City - UK

Britain's Secret Homes Radlett 60's
The Centre Point building in London is one of the most iconic buildings of the swinging 60s. At the same time as this groovy building was being erected in the middle of London, architect George Marsh was building a home for his young family in Hertfordshire.
He stated that Loom Lane was his creative outlet from corporate architecture, and creative it is! Using offcuts from the floor tiles and glass shards of Centre Point, Marsh built one of the most unusual family homes in the country. With its hyperbolic parabaloid roof and furniture designed by the most prominent artists of the decade, this house is a true time capsule of a Britain full of creativity and promise.
Elain Harwood, English Heritage's expert on post-war architecture, says: Loom Lane swings with the Sixties as you'd expect from the designer of London's Centre Point, George Marsh, a partner of Richard Seifert's. There is a soaring handkerchief roof, mosaic and coloured glass, and fantastic original furniture.

Highest Waterfall in Northumberland?
2nd January 2018
I head close to the border with Scotland to bag arguably the hardest Northumbrian Dewey and see the highest waterfall in Northumberland.
-----
If you would like to support me, I am raising money for surgery in Spain:
-----
On my way I saw a stag (sadly missed on camera), a stoat in winter coat, and 2 wild goats.
The scenery was spectacular but the terrain was tough with a little over 4 miles of knee to thigh high heather bashing, at least a mile of bog to cross, and about the same in knee high ferns.
This is NOT a walk for the summer. It is likely to be waist high ferns and lots of ticks. It is also a place to see lots of adders.

What to do in Powell River | Sunshine Coast Travel Guide | Giant Hulks, Inland Lake Provincial Park
#WhatToDoInPowellRiver #SunshineCoastTravelGuide #GiantHulks
This weeks video is going to be a quick travel guide for the town of Powell River, located along the Northern part of BC’s beautiful Sunshine Coast. Here are my top 6 recommendations for what to do and see while visiting the area:
#1: The Giant Hulks, viewable from the “Townsite Viewpoint” along Marine Avenue. These 10 giant ships are the last remaining floating concrete ships from the 1st and 2nd world wars. The ships form a massive floating breakwater on the Malaspina Strait, which was constructed to protect the logging pond of the Powell River Company paper mill in 1930.
#2: Inland Lake Provincial Park, located on the southeast side of Powell Lake. Equipped with a 13km fully accessible trail all the way around the lake, this park is ideal for those looking to do anything outdoorsy - hike, camp, cycle, fish, canoe or boat! The dock makes for a great swimming area.
#3: Mowat Bay Beach, located on the south end of Powell Lake. This bay is a great area for hiking, canoeing and boating. It’s family friendly and is equipped with a children’s playground, sandy beach area, benches, washrooms and a boat launch.
Food:
#4: The Seasider Bistro + Wine Bar + Patio, located on the southern tip of Powell River along the Sunshine Coast Highway. This beautiful spot is Powell River’s only oceanfront patio, boasts stunning views of the Malaspina Strait, live music on weekends, and a delicious menu. It’s also one of the best places to watch the sunset in town. A must visit spot!
#5: The Shinglemill Pub & Bistro, located on the southern tip of Powell Lake. The pub boasts a delicious menu, a variety of yummy cocktails, and breathtaking views of Powell Lake & the marina. Great spot to pop in for drinks and an appetizer after a day on the water!
#6: Base Camp Coffee, located a 5 minute walk from the BC Ferries Terminal along Marine Ave. This artistically inspired space is known for it’s fresh coffee and delicious menu of local/ seasonal food. The carrot muffin was SO good!
I hope after watching this video, you’ve been inspired to check out Powell River on BC’s sunshine coast. Stay tuned for next weeks fully loaded vlog of our entire weekend away in this cute little town, you don’t want to miss it!
Thanks so much for watching these videos guys! Don’t forget to subscribe to stay up to date on my future adventures.
