Places to visit in Italy 🇮🇹 - part 1 : Gravina in Puglia #italy #travel #placestovisit
🇮🇹Places to visit in Italy ( part 1)
Do you recognize this bridge from somewhere? It's the bridge James Bond walked along and later jumped off in No time to die …
The movie is actually recorded in the
neighboring Matera, but the bridge scene is recorded here.
Most people only make it to Matera, or in the best case scenario to Altamura and skip Gravina, which is a huge mistake if you're asking me...
Gravina in Puglia is built on the edge of a ravine, and like Matera, it has an ancient quarter with dwellings and churches hewn out of the rocky hillside. Due to its strategic location on the Via Appia (the ancient Roman road linking Rome with Brindisi) and its fertile lands, Gravina in Puglia prospered.
The town's most famous attraction is its bridge. It was built in the 17th century, it was later destroyed by an earthquake in 1722, and restored afterwards and repurposed as an aqueduct by the Orsini's, a powerful family from Rome.
On one side of the bridge is Gravina's adorable center, while on the other side of the bridge lies the ancient quarter (nowadays, the Botromagno Archeological Park), with its age-old monuments, cave dwellings and churches carved out from the rock. This is the place where you get the best views over the ravine and entire Gravina including its breathtaking Cathedral on the very edge…
Tip: DO NOT listen to Google maps and park outside the old town then walk. We listened to the navigation and I'II show you later in my stories where it took us.
Another tip: We found out later on, that Gravina isn't quite the safest place to be so if possible, go in groups and don't go with your own car.
Specially not with a rental car with Italian plates!
📍Ponte Madonna della Stella, also known as the Ponte Acquedotto Madonna della Stella or Ponte Viadotto-Acquedotto Madonna della Stella... Located in Gravina in Puglia.

Gravina in Puglia, Italy - 4K UHD - Virtual Trip
Gravina in Puglia is a town located about 40 km from Bari, on the border between Basilicata and Puglia. It is the seat of the Parco Nazionale dell'Alta Murgia, an area characterised by numerous gravina or canyons, some of which are a hundred metres deep. Further south and down to the sea through the Parco Regionale della Murgia Materana, there are similar towns, perched and sometimes literally cut in two by canyons: Matera, Ginosa, Castellanota, Laterza are good examples. This region, on the border between two of the most beautiful regions of Italy, is a real treasure for those who love old villages, caves and beautiful landscapes!

A Week in Altamura, Italy, September 10-17
This was a great week to be in this small town about 50 km inland from Bari. It was the base camp for an English hiking group HF Holidays. Each day we would hike in a different nearby area of Puglia.
That week was the celebration for the Virgin of the Good Journey. As you can see two cardinals showed up for the ceremonies. The main square was decorated with lights. Unlike Pompeii every night was a strolling night and every one young and old was on the street walking back and forth.
There were also several weddings. I felt as if I were in Fellini movie. The women were all dressed so extravagantly. I should have taken a video of the bride kissing everyone but I am still a photographer rather than a videographer.
Is this Italy's BEST region?! | Puglia 5 day itinerary
Last summer I was lucky enough to visit the most beautiful region of Italy, Puglia.
In this vlog, I take you along as I explore the charming towns of Matera, Alberobello, Polignano a Mare, and more, immersing myself in the rich history, delicious cuisine, and breathtaking views of this picturesque region.
We spent 5 days here and felt that it was the perfect amount of time to experience the different towns this region has to offer.

Discovering the Magic of Gravina in Puglia, Italy. Ep. 7
Gravina in Puglia, Italy, province of Bari, home of the Alta Murgia National Park. In this 7th episode dedicated to Puglia, I show you the city that stands on the edge of a deep canyon dug by the Gravina stream on a site inhabited for over 10,000 years.
The history of Gravina in Puglia is characterized by multiple dominations, starting from the Greeks and Romans, continuing with numerous barbarian invasions interrupted by the arrival of the Normans, the Swabians and finally the Angevins. The population of Gravina in Puglia actively participated in the revolutionary movements that led to the unification of Italy.
The old city of Gravina is the result of this long and troubled history. The Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, the city's cathedral, is its most valuable monument due to the richness of its interiors. Walking through the streets of the historic center, noble palaces, churches and other buildings are a visible testimony of past vicissitudes.
The churches and rock sanctuaries of the Botromagno, Piaggio and Fondovito districts are of great charm and alone justify the visit. Excavated into the tuff, some of these places of worship have very ancient origins as pagan temples, subsequently converted for Christian use.
But the true symbol of the city today is the eighteenth-century aqueduct bridge that connects the two banks of the crevasse on the edge of which Gravina stands. The view it offers from its parapet is spectacular.
Finally, if you have time, I recommend you book a guided tour of the Gravina hypogeum. In a couple of hours, specialized guides will lead you through a labyrinth of caves, tunnels and underground structures built over time by the population and accessible only by passing through the cellars of some private homes. You will discover that under the open-air city, there is another completely hidden one.

Discover Gravina in Puglia: A Hidden Gem in Italy
Hi my friends! Let's walk by the beautiful Gravina in Puglia!
Welcome to Gravina in Puglia, a city renowned for its rock-hewn churches and rich history. Birthplace of Pope Benedict XIII, Gravina offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical architecture, making it a must-visit destination in Italy.
In this video we will get to know together the Roman bridge that connects both parts of the city of Gravina, in addition to the beautiful historic center, with its beautiful little streets and its many churches.
🏨 BEST HOTELS where to stay in Gravina in Puglia 👉
Start your journey with the city's main attraction, the Gravina Canyon. Formed over millennia by water erosion, this canyon isn't just a natural wonder; it's the cradle of the city's civilization. The ancient settlement of Sidion, dating back to the Neolithic era, was located here, showcasing the city's Greek and Roman heritage.
Gravina's history is fascinating. Originally known as Silvium during the Roman era, it served as a military station on the Appian Way. The city witnessed both prosperity and destruction, including a devastating earthquake in 455 A.D. and an invasion by the Vandals.
Explore the cave dwellings where the inhabitants sought refuge after these calamities. These caves, some still accessible, reveal a lifestyle deeply connected to the city's Greek and Roman past. Don't miss the rock churches like the Crypt of San Vito Vecchio, the Sanctuary of Madonna della Stella, and the Church of San Michele delle Grotte, all carved into the tufa rock, showcasing the artistic and historical richness of Gravina

Gravina In Puglia
