Huntingdon is a market town in Cambridgeshire, England. The town was chartered by King John in 1205. Huntingdon is the traditional county town of Huntingdonshire and the seat of the Huntingdonshire district council.
Huntingdon is well known as the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell, who was born in 1599 and was the member of parliament (MP) for the town in the 17th century. The George Hotel, on the corner of High Street and George Street was once a posting house. It was named after St. George in 1574 and was bought some 25 years later by Henry Cromwell, grandfather of Oliver Cromwell. Charles I made The George his headquarters in 1645. Later Dick Turpin is reputed to have been a visitor when it was a coaching inn on the Great North Road.
Huntingdon lies on the north bank of the River Great Ouse, opposite Godmanchester and close to the market town of St Ives in the east and the village of Brampton in the west. Huntingdon now incorporates the village of Hartford to the east, and the developing areas of Oxmoor, Stukeley Meadows and Hinchingbrooke to the north and west. Between Godmanchester, Huntingdon and Brampton lies England's largest meadow, Portholme Meadow.
Huntingdon is home to many local businesses, including a local Horseracing Course, Huntingdon Racecourse. Hinchingbrooke Business Park has many offices and warehouses located in it. Huntingdon railway station has direct services to London Kings Cross station. It is served by Great Northern.

Huntingdon Cambridgeshire Things To Do
Huntingdon is a market town in Cambridgeshire England, historic Huntingdonshire. The town was chartered by King John in 1205. However, human settlement in this place was known from Anglo-Saxon times and even earlier. In Roman times the settlement was located on the crossing of very important roads: London to York and Chester to Colchester. You can still see the reminder of that ancient time - Ermine Street is still crossing the town.

Godmanchester Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Cambridgeshire, and around 15 miles northwest of Cambridge, is the town of Godmanchester.
Geographically, Godmanchester is situated along the south bank of the River Great Ouse which separates it from the town of Huntingdon to the north. An old Roman fort known as Durovigutum once stood here on a strategic spot on the crossroads between Ermine Street (London to York) and Via Devana (Colchester to Chester).
During the 9th century, Godmanchester fell under the rule of the Danelaw following the invasion of the Great Heathen Army. One hypothesis for the town's name suggests that it comes from 'Guthrum's fort' - Guthrum being the Viking king of East Anglia around this period. It has also been suggested that the name means 'fort of the Goths', alluding to the Germanic settlers of Sub-Roman Britain.
In 1212 a market charter was granted to Godmanchester by King John. Historic industries in the town have included agriculture, brewing and milling. In the case of the latter, the River Great Ouse has been used to power water mills along its course.
Standing in a prominent position in the town is the Church of St Mary the Virgin. This dates all the way back to the 13th century, albeit with various additions from the 14th and 15th centuries, and a 17th century tower and spire. The church is Grade I listed.
In 1827 the original Godmanchester Chinese Bridge was built across the River Great Ouse. This was constructed from wood in a Chinese style, hence the name. After falling into bad condition, it was reconstructed in facsimile in 1960, and again replaced in 2010. The bridge features from around the 8-minute mark. It is referenced in the 2017 song Godmanchester Chinese Bridge by British indie rock band The Howl & The Hum.
In 1847 a railway station opened in Godmanchester. Initially it was known as Huntingdon up until 1882, despite another station of the same name opening in Huntingdon itself in 1850. Godmanchester station closed to passengers in 1959 and to freight in 1962. Today, Huntingdon is the nearest station, situated about a mile and a half from Godmanchester town centre. Alternatively, local buses to and from Cambridge and other nearby settlements are available.
Historically, Godmanchester was part of the county of Huntingdonshire. However, in 1974 this county was effectively swallowed up by Cambridgeshire. Huntingdonshire, or Hunts for short, still refers to the non-metropolitan district of Cambridgeshire centred around Huntingdon where the district council is based.
Godmanchester is represented in sport by Godmanchester Rovers Football Club. Founded in 1911, they play their home games at Bearscroft Lane, and are notable for having given Darren Bent a start to his career before his ascent to the Premier League.

Godmanchester Town Walk, English Countryside 4K
۞
All support is hugely appreciated and it helps me keep the channel going!
No talking, just walking. Exploring the English Countryside. A nice gentle walk the Town of Godmanchester, It's name is seemingly just coincidental as there are no particular ties to either anything religious, or to the City of Manchester. Godmanchester was originally a Roman settlement known as Durovigutum. The Roman name is believed to have derived from the Celtic word dwr, which means water, and vicus, which means settlement or village. So, Durovigutum likely referred to a settlement near water, which makes sense as the town is situated on the River Great Ouse. Over time, the name Durovigutum evolved into Guvenceaster during the Anglo-Saxon period. Eventually, it became Godmundcestre during the Middle Ages, which means the camp or settlement of Godmund.

Historic County Tops Of England Challenge
In 2016, I decided to set myself a little challenge. I wanted to explore more places in England, and so it began, to conquer the 39 highest points of the Historic Counties of England.
The Historic (or true) counties are the administrative areas that survived for more than a hundred years before sweeping local government changes in the 1970s.
They have shaped the UK's cultural and geographical identity, and while their boundaries may not be marked on modern maps, they were never formally abolished and so live on.
- The UK's County Tops - Jonny Muir.

Hitchin is a market town in the North Hertfordshire District in Hertfordshire, England. The town flourished on the wool trade, and located near the Icknield Way and by the 17th century Hitchin was a staging post for coaches coming from London. By the middle of the 19th century the railway had arrived, and with it a new way of life for Hitchin. The corn exchange was built in the market place and within a short time Hitchin established itself as a major centre for grain trading.
The latter half of the 20th century has also brought great changes in communication to Hitchin. Motorways have shortened the journey time and brought Luton, a few miles away on the M1, and the A1 (M) even closer. By the close of the 20th century, Hitchin had become a satellite dormitory town for London. Hitchin also developed a fairly strong Sikh community based around the Walsworth area.
Hitchin railway station is on the Great Northern Line, to which the Cambridge Line connects just north of the station. There are direct connections to London, Stevenage, Peterborough, and Cambridge. Journeys to London and Cambridge both last approximately 30 minutes on the Express services. Stevenage is 5 minutes away and Peterborough is typically 45 minutes distance in journey-time. The A505, A600 and A602 roads intersect in Hitchin, which is about three miles (5 km) from the A1(M) motorway and about ten miles (16 km) from the M1 motorway. Hitchin is about 9 miles from Luton Airport with a direct bus service linking the two.
Hitchin hosts an annual Arts & Music Festival in July which in previous years included Rhythms of the World. Hitchin Festival includes picnics, concerts, theatre, ghost walks, art exhibitions, comedy club, talks, summer fetes and fireworks. Since 2014, Hitchin has hosted the yarn festival Festiwool, organised and run by members of Hitchin Stitchin.
