New Zealand is one of the world’s best places to live and retire, best place to raise your family. It has a very pleasant climate, great beaches, a wide variety of outdoor activities, cultural attractions, free health care
(for the most part), a good educational system, economic freedom, a lack of corruption and attractive, modern cities.

New Zealand is comprised of two big islands called North Island and South Island, plus numerous smaller islands.
It is located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean and is very geographically isolated.
Its nearest neighbors are Australia, which is 1242 miles to the northwest, and New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga to the north.
The population of New Zealand is 4,334,000, the majority of whom are of European descent.

Living In GISBORNE New Zealand 🇳🇿 Top Things To Do Tairawhiti East Coast NZ | 197 Countries, 3 Kids

Hi everyone,

Join us on a tour around Gisborne, the first place where Captain James Cook set foot in New Zealand.

Another thing Gisborne is famous for is being the first City (there are smaller places further east) to see the first sun rays every morning.

While in Gisborne, we stayed at a beautiful house that belonged to the mother of Chantal’s friend from Canada. What we really loved most about it was the spacious, fully-equipped kitchen because we love preparing our own meals

If you’ve seen our previous videos, you know that our girls are excellent cooks, and if you haven’t, this video will definitely make it obvious because we did cook some yummy meals such as tofu curry, veggie wraps, eggs benedict, banana bread and much more!

On day one, we decided to take a walk to downtown Gisborne and get a better sense of the area. We walked up to the waterfront to check out Gisborne port and the statues of James Cook and his cabin boy “Young Nick” who was actually the first one to spot the New Zealand coast in the distance.

Another famous Gisborne location is Titirangi, Kaiti Hill. We drove up to the top (even though you can also take a hike) to have a picnic and enjoy one of the best views of the area.

Along the way, we kinda lost Tyler, who actually went further up to take a beautiful panoramic video. It took us a while to regroup, but, as you know, we love a good workout in nature. Exercise is exactly why locals love climbing up Titirangi, Kaiti Hill too.

Gisborne also had a great iSITE information desk that Chantal and Julia visited to learn more about what would be fun to see and do in the area. They also found a small European-style café to enjoy a nice cup of coffee by the waterfront.

On Saturday we visited the farmers market, which happens every weekend, and bought some locally-grown produce and cheese that ended up on our table for lunch. After a healthy meal, we tasted some not-so-healthy Kiwi lollies (candy) like pineapple lumps, you all suggested we should try.

In need of some more ingredients, Chantal and Chloe went to the store, and Chloe walked barefoot in a public place for the first time! We were definitely becoming Kiwis!

Gisborne is also one of the best places to go surfing in New Zealand, so we couldn’t miss checking out the surfers gliding across the ocean at Okitu Beach.

Another must-see location in Gisborne is the Eastwoodhill Arboretum (tree garden). We went on a buggy tour around the place learning about its history, the founder, the trees and how they ended up in the park, and even how they were planted.

We also witnessed an interesting phenomenon known as “crown shyness” observed in some tree species whose crowns don’t touch when fully stocked.

We loved spending time in Eastwoodhill Arboretum. It was a fun and educational activity at a very reasonable price.

With another week to go, we still had plenty of things to see and do. Join us in part 2 for an epic adventure with stingrays at Dive Tatapouri, sheep shearing near the Mahia rocket launch complex, and more!

So, what do you think of Gisborne so far? Would you ever visit this beautiful coastal city?

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!

24 Hours In Gisborne! (Winery, Beach, Cafe & Accommodation)

Welcome to Gisborne New Zealand! We're checking out a few beaches, the best cafe, visiting a winery and sharing some accommodation with ya... Check out the amazing accommodation here: ⬇ More Below ⬇

It's so good to be in Gisborne! We've both been here in years gone by, but never for long and without really getting a feel for what Gisborne is actually like. There's some amazing wineries, a handful of really cool cafes, beaches as far as the eye can see and some amazing accommodation as well.

In this vlog we travel around the city ticking off some of the best things to do and see, namely a few amazing beaches!
— Waikanae beach is where we took a walk, making friends with the dog
— Wainui / Okitu beach was where the surf was at

Food at Flagship eatery was boss level greatness

Matawhero wines is the vineyard we visited, the oldest winery cellar door in a pretty long-established wine region. Check out pricing here —

Those sunrise shots were from the Mount Hikurangi sunrise experience provided by Gisborne Tairawhiti tourism - sadly they're not operating at the moment so our tour was canceled, it's a shame, because there is a rich Maori heritage in Gisborne that we would have loved to explore further. The other great thing to do is (or what have been, also canceled sadly) is the Waka experience, that would have been another way for us to see more of the cultural side of this awesome city! If you're reading this because you want to visit Gisborne, definitely check if those 2 are operating again!

1. The First Sunrise in the World
Being the first city in the world to see the sun, Gisborne is the place to get out of bed early and find a suitable spot to see the first rays of light of a new day. Further north the sacred Mt Hikurangi, a non-volcanic 1752m high peak, standing tall over the Raukumara Range, is the first place to catch the dawn. Enjoy the statues of Maui and other of the demi-god's family, on your way to the summit. Drive 190 km north of the city, to East Cape, the most eastern point of the country, another choice for viewing daybreak, while the historic Lighthouse there is worth a visit even during the daytime.

2. The First European Landfall
On 6th October 1769, Nicholas Young, a surgeon's boy on the Endeavour, sighted land and that is remembered today with the name of Young Nick's Head on the south of Poverty Bay. The ship, captained by James Cook, made landfall on Kaiti Beach on the Gisborne waterfront. Today the Cook Landing Site National Historic Reserve marks the spot, but it is no longer on the waterfront. The former waterline is now a mere dip in the ground in front of the memorial.

3. Museums
The Tairawhiti Museum is a social and cultural collection of Taonga (treasure) of the East Cape region, with collections including Fine art, Photographs and Oral history. There are also collections of surfboards, Maori Taonga, and a display called Watersheds that tells of the struggles and endeavour involved in establishing the area. Wyllie Cottage is the oldest surviving European house in Gisborne and includes the stories of the people who have made this cottage their home in bygone years.

4. Checking out the Countryside
One of New Zealand's nine best walks is the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk, a 46 km trail that will usually take 4-5 days to complete through native bush with giant trees, past isolated beaches, and in the depths of historical sites. The natural flora of the area includes more than 650 natives, many that are rare. Native birds are abundant as and both of New Zealand's bat species (both rare) are found here. Hunting, with permits, is welcomed to assist keeping deer, pigs and possums under control. Rere Falls is a popular place to visit and the Rere Rockslide is one of the greatest natural activities in the country. A naturally formed 60m long slide provides a wild ride for swimmers with tubes, boogie boards or rubber mattresses.

5. Eating & Drinking Poverty Bay
It is surprising to many people to learn that Gisborne is the third largest wine region in New Zealand, and the wines produced there are not the usual wines either. Chardonnay is the most grown, but then the runner-up wine is Gewürztraminer, a relatively unknown variety. Ciders are also produced in the area. Local wines can be sampled at the Gisborne Wine Centre. The Harvest Cidery began making cider from their own apples in 1989, and today make a range of quality ciders.
