Wikipedia:
Gillette is a city in and the county seat of Campbell County, Wyoming, United States. The town was founded in 1891 as a major railway town on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad.

The population was estimated at 32,030 as of July 1, 2019. Gillette's population increased 48% in the ten years after the 2000 census, which counted 19,646 residents after a boom in its local fossil fuel industries.

Gillette is centrally located in an area involved with the development of vast quantities of American coal, oil, and coalbed methane gas. The city calls itself the Energy Capital of the Nation; Wyoming provides nearly 35% of the nation's coal. However, a decline in coal use in the U.S. has led to a decline in the local economy, leading some local officials to look for other industries or employment opportunities. As a major economic hub for the county, the city is also a regional center for media, education, health, and arts.

Before its founding, Gillette started as Donkey Town, named after Donkey Creek, and then was moved and called Rocky Pile after Rocky Draw.

Gillette was founded in 1891 with the coming of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad and incorporated on January 6, 1892, less than two years after Wyoming became a state. Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad changed the name to Gillette for Edward Gillette, a surveyor for the company.

In November 1895, a fire destroyed most of the city. Only two saloons, two stores, and a restaurant survived. A group of families from Mathews County, Virginia and Gloucester County, Virginia settled in the town between 1895 and 1905, all of whom were members of the Episcopal Church, and there has been an Episcopalian presence in Gillette ever since. During this same era a group of immigrants from County Antrim, Ireland (in what has since become Northern Ireland) also settled in Gillette, these settlers were Presbyterians of Scottish descent, this population was referred to as Scots-Irish in the United States, however this was not a term used in Ireland. Norwegian immigrants arrived in the town during the same era, all of whom were Lutheran. There were also a small group of settlers from rural New England, these were old stock Yankee New Englanders who were members of the Congregational church.

In 1974, U.S. psychologist ElDean Kohrs used the town as the basic example of what he called the Gillette Syndrome, the social disruption that can occur in a community due to rapid population growth. During the 1960s, Gillette's population doubled from 3,580 to 7,194. Kohrs proposed that this fast increase caused increased crime, high costs of living, and weakened social and community bonds. Some of Kohrs's claims about the energy industry's influence have been disputed, since similar increases in divorce rates, welfare usage, and crime were also seen in other rapidly growing areas of the country.

Scenic Drive to visit “Our Wyoming Life” Harvest Host / Gillette, WY / Best Stay!

From the O.W.L. webpage:

“The Our Wyoming Life ranch was originally homesteaded in the early 1900s, now you can stay on the ranch and call it home, even if just for a night.
Amenities include:– RV Length 45 feet +– Pets Allowed– Free RV dump station– Free potable water refill station– Power (50 & 30 amp) available for a 15$ fee– Garbage dump– On site farm store with local beef, pork, chicken, eggs, jerky, produce, honey, baked goods and more”

The drive on I-90 from Billings Montana and through Wyoming to Gillette, is one that I was not expecting, as it was the first time during this trip I had witnessed scenery that was entirely new to me. I was taken aback by the wide open spaces, generous skies and roads that introduced the most beautiful landscapes. I do so wish there was a way to share what it is like to see everything from the front seat. Nothing will ever come close to that. Wyoming is worth a visit, and while scenery can certainly be subjective, I can say after visiting on three or four separate occasions over the years, it can be considered, beautiful.

If you are traveling by RV, and have yet to try a Harvest Host, this is a great place to get your feet wet. I cannot recommend this stop enough. Erin and her ranch hand Jeff, were such a joy to meet, and if you have not heard of their YouTube channel, Our Wyoming Life, you should definitely check it out if you have any curiosity about farm life, and maybe need a smile or two added to your day.

We shopped the farm store for some super fresh and delicious goodies, even some lovely home made ice cream. They also have other trinkets and souvenirs available. Note: You can visit the store without having to be a guest as well.

I do believe my favorite part of our visit was the 30 minute morning tour given by Erin, in which she so graciously paused her daily routine to show us around and introduce us to the animals that are often featured on her channel. We also toured the gardens, which are not only grown and harvested for the farm store, but for a wonderful program that serves the community as well.

My highlight here was feeding the baby bum lambs, Twizzler and Tootsie, with Erin. She took them in when offered to her after being born in a snowstorm and found alone on another ranch nearby. What a privilege to bottle feed them, a first I will not soon forget. Oh, and the cows! I got to feed them some treats, and it made me smile a mile!

This was one of my most favorite stops on our six week journey. Special thanks to Erin and Jeff for their kindness, hospitality, and for the perfect spot to park, eat, enjoy and witness farm life, even if only for a day.

Every Harvest Host is different, and as I have previously stated, not all are going to meet every expectation. But, if you find yourself passing through Gillette, especially if you’re on your way to or from Mount Rushmore, this is a fantastic place to stay.

I hope to have yet another movie on Friday, which will mostly be another scenic drive that takes us to our next location at Palmer Gulch KOA in South Dakota. Included will be an ever so brief stop at Crazy Horse Memorial. Thanks for sparing a few minutes of your day to watch and read. Hope you enjoy this drive and stay, and I’ll catch ya next time!♥️
