Old Photographs Rouken Glen Park Giffnock East Renfrewshire Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Rouken Glen Park a public park in Giffnock, East Renfrewshire. Rouken Glen Park lies some six miles to the south of Glasgow city centre with Newton Mearns to the south and Thornliebank to the north. The lands of Rouken Glen Park originally belonged to the Scottish Crown, and then to the Earl of Eglinton, presented to Hugh Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Eglinton on the marriage of his son in the year 1530 by King James V. It takes its name from the old Rock End Meal Mill in the glen, which dates back to the early 16th century. The remains of the meal mill can be seen at the foot of the waterfall, deep within the foliage and rhododendron bushes high on the slope away from the pathway. Amongst the park's owners were Walter Crum of Thornliebank and Archibald Cameron Corbett, M.P. for Tradeston, Glasgow, later Lord Rowallan, who gifted the estate and mansion house to the citizens of Glasgow. It was officially opened on 25 May 1906 and leased in June 1984 to the then Eastwood District Council.
Places to see in ( East Kilbride - UK )
Places to see in ( East Kilbride - UK )
East Kilbride is the largest town in South Lanarkshire in Scotland. East Kilbride is also designated as Scotland's first new town on 6 May 1947. East Kilbride lies on high ground on the south side of the Cathkin Braes, about 8 miles (13 km) southeast of Glasgow and close to the boundary with East Renfrewshire.
East Kilbride is enclosed by the White Cart River to the west and the Rotten Calder to the east, the latter flowing northwards to join the River Clyde near Cambuslang. This area was previously the site of the small village of East Kilbride, prior to its post-war development.
East Kilbride forms part of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. However, the urban area is not directly connected to any other. The hamlets of Nerston and Jackton which were once separate settlements are now on the periphery of the expanding town.
Clarkston and Busby are also about 3 miles away to the west, with Thorntonhall much closer. Eaglesham lies to the south-west (again this is about 3 miles from East Kilbride centre). Another modern bypass keeps East Kilbride traffic heading for the M77 motorway away from Eaglesham. The closest town to the south of East Kilbride is Strathaven, about 7 miles away. The majority of land in that area is taken up by Whitelee Wind Farm.
East Kilbride is divided into a number of smaller areas bordered by main through-roads. Part of the new town design was that each of these would be a self-contained entity, with local shops and primary schools. This is true for the original areas of the town but newer developments, such as Stewartfield do not adhere to this model.
East Kilbride is connected to Glasgow city centre by road and rail. Three main roads connect East Kilbride with surrounding suburbs and the city, one being the A727 (formerly A726) leading west to Busby and on to Clarkston Toll. East Kilbride bus station, at the East Kilbride Shopping Centre, was rebuilt in June 2005 with modern facilities, including 14 rapid drive-through stances, allowing quick turnover of buses. East Kilbride railway station is situated in the Village, about a 10-minute walk from the bus station. Trains depart to Glasgow Central railway station every half-hour, with a journey time of about 27 minutes. The town is also served by Hairmyres railway station in Hairmyres.
( East Kilbride - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of East Kilbride . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in East Kilbride - UK

Murland Mausoleum Clough Co Down No Ordinary Tomb
This is the Murland Family Mausoleum sittind at the back of Clough Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church, Castlewellan Road, Clough, County Down just aross the road from Frenchies Restaurant.
Here we have a finely carved crypt built in the neoclassical/baroque style with pedimented gable end topped by urns. It has a stone pitched roof with steps leading down below ground to a metal door. Above a rounded recessed opening with metal grill with an archway is decorated in rusticated style. The gable walls support a low pediment adorned with acanthus
( flower ) and scrollwork detail. Giant order of consoles flanked by flambeau ( torches ) support a cornice. The roofline boasts acroteria, ( -An acroterion or acroterium or akroteria is an architectural ornament placed on a flat pedestal called the acroter or plinth, and mounted at the apex or corner of the pediment of a building in the classical style ), antefixae (-An antefix, from Latin antefigere, to fasten before, is a vertical block which terminates the covering tiles of a tiled roof ) and draped urn finials. There are marble plaques inserted along the tomb sides and a granite plinth.
The stone is buff-pink sandstone with the primary stone being Giffnock sandstone imported from Glasgow. The secondary stone type is Newry granodiorite. The inserts are marble.
The draped urns on the roof of the building were -common in Victorian cemeteries. They symbolise a separation between the living and the dead and a protective shroud for the soul. They are a classically inspired symbol of death.
This then is no ordinary tomb. The Murlands were at pains to emphasis that they were no ordinary family. Their mausoleum dominates the graveyard and is very out of keeping with the more humble graveheadstones from the period. No expense has been spared here and no detail neglected in the construction. The Murland family were the linen industry in this South Down region and that this mausoleum was built in 1860.
A lot of the very interesting Murland family story can be found detailed in the 2008 book titled 'Departed Warriors -the Story of a Family in War' by Jerry Murland.
'Departed Warrirs Takes the reader from the shores of Britain with the first volunteer army to leave for South Africa to fight in the Second Boer War, and to the battlefronts of the Great War of 1914-18. This work offers an account of two generations of a family who fought for their country and the impact it had upon their lives.'
Jerry Murland served in the Parachute Regiment. He is the author of Departed Warriors and Aristocrats Go To War (Pen and Sword Military). He is a prolific writer of military books dealing with WW1 and WW2. He lives near Coventry.
Old Photographs Thornliebank East Renfrewshire Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Thornliebank, Scottish Gaelic: Bruach nan Dealgan, a suburban area in East Renfrewshire. Part of the Greater Glasgow conurbation, it is located on the Auldhouse Burn about 6 miles south of Glasgow city centre. The village now a suburb of Glasgow, first made its appearance on Thomas Richardson's map of 1795 and was, at the time, referred to as Thorny Bank, a title believed to have been inspired by the substantial number of thorn trees that were prevalent in the area. In 1789 it was a little street of cottages but it had grown by 1845, to have a population of 1366. This was largely due to the Crum family, who established and ran the Thornliebank printworks. John Crum founded the works in Main Street in 1778 to print locally woven linen. Walter Crum who was in charge by 1819 was a chemist and Fellow of the Royal Society. He replaced spinning and weaving by calico printing with bleaching, and turkey red dyeing. This work brought immigrants from Northern Ireland. Walter's son Alexander Crum who took over the printing works was a major philanthropist supporting housing, education, and leisure facilities in the village. He also provided funds for the village club and Thornliebank Parish Church. Alexander Crum was Member of Parliament for Renfrewshire from 1880 to 1885. After his death he was commemorated by the Crum Library which was designed by the Scottish architect Sir Rowand Anderson and formally opened on 20 March 1897
