I have made it safely to Africa's smallest country on the mainland! It's called THE GAMBIA -- have you ever heard of it before?

This nation is completely surrounded by Senegal and the Atlantic Ocean on all sides, and it's appropriately nicknamed The Smiling Coast of Africa. Seriously, people smile at you from every angle here!

We've spent the past 2.5 days here and it's been a very interesting experience to say the least. I love the people and the nature -- they are both world class. But something doesn't feel right to me about the society, which I explain in this video.

This West Africa road trip is getting crazier and crazier by the day! Follow along on IG Stories for live updates in real time!

Bakau, coastal city in The Gambia, hotels, Fajara, fisherman, market, bars, guesthouse

Bakau is a pleasant area in which to stay which is a little calmer than some of the more traditional tourist hotspots. There are still bumsters, however they are less aggressive and less frequent. There are some reasonable places to eat, a good variety of bars and plenty of places to buy crafts and produce.
Get in[edit]
It is uproad from Fajara, past the MRC. Take a yellow taxi from anywhere in the capital area and it should not cost you more than 100 dalasi, even from Banjul. Haggle hard.
You can also use the yellow taxis as shared taxi. Just tell them you don't want to have a town trip (privat taxi drive), then you will just pay 8 dalasi from Serrekunda or from traffic light. You can also use the small buses, just ask them where they're going, it will be a little bit slower than a taxi, but it will cost you 8 dalasi as well and you will travel like a local.
Get around[edit]
Yellow taxis are inexpensive if you know what you're doing, bush taxis (minibuses) are available also but you need to know how to navigate them. Bakau itself can be explored on foot and there are no areas where you cannot safely walk, although in the backstreets there is no street lighting so may not feel comfortable after dark.
See[edit][add listing]
There is a landing place and market for small boat fishermen, which is enjoyable to watch. This is more somewhere to stay and party in the evenings, the major attractions are in other areas.
Do[edit][add listing]
Mainly an entertainment area.
Buy[edit][add listing]
There is a craft market which is a good place to buy souvenirs if you want your money to go straight to the craftsman.
Eat[edit][add listing]
The best restaurant in the area, which also has outstanding views over the sea and fish market, is called something like the Fisherman's Rest (I forget the precise name) and is in the building which was once the house of the old colonial governor. It is comparatively expensive but good and not so touristy.
A cheaper but decent alternative is Saffie J's, especially for African dishes. between 175 and 250 dalasi for a main dish and 10 dalasi for a fish pie. Try the local tapalapa sandwiches for breakfast, they're selled everywhere on the street. You can find the best ones on the Kofi Annaan Road, opposite to the one world guesthouse. Try the one with potatoes. Between 15 and 20 Dalasi for a huge tapalapa baguette.
Drink[edit][add listing]
Bars here are plentiful. The locals will all try to get you to go to a place called Lama Lama, however I do not recommend it as it is very sleazy and not very good. If you want a place where you will not encounter bumsters, L.A. Live is a good option as the security keeps them out. Sinatra's often has good live music. If you want a heavy Reggae party, the Romana guesthouse has two big nights a week, dont go here until you are used to Gambia however. The last post, ie the bar open latest, is called Podium and located in the backstreets. I recommend you go here with a Gambian, it is worth buying a few drinks for him to have him lead you safely through the streets when you are drunk and to stop the other people in there hassling you for drinks. There are lots of other options, also lots of good places to watch English football. But I would avoid Lama Lama.
Sleep[edit][add listing]
The Romana guesthouse is cheap at 375 per night and is pretty good EXCEPT they have two big club nights per week where you will not sleep until 4 am (all other nights are quiet). If you are there to party, great, if you are staying there you are like the VIP. However, if you are the quiet type, do not stay here these nights.
One World Guesthouse, Kofi Annaan Road 10. 18€ for a double room with shared toilet. Very clean and a beautiful garden with a pool. Staff is nice and helpful. There are other guesthouses, all reasonable prices and quality.
Contact[edit]
A few honest people: Ali is an Egyptian who runs the Fisherman's restaurant mentioned above. Noah, the manager of the Romana will keep you safe and deal fairly with you if you stay there. Saffie, who runs Saffie J's, is an ex-soldier with a lot of influence, if you need someone to tell a bumster to go away he is your man.
Get out[edit]
The whole capital area is easily accessible, river trips can be arranged, you are not too far from the Barra ferry if you want to go up to Senegal.

After traveling to every country in the world, here are my 5 LEAST FAVORITE countries based on my own personal travel experiences.

I was hesitant to make this video because of the potential negative feedback I’ll get - but I’ve always been honest and transparent from my travels, and I feel like this kind of storytelling needs to be told.

And by the way, please note that I DO NOT HATE any of these countries.

Travel is very subjective (based on one’s own personal experience) and there are many variables that can make or break your trip -- such as the weather, your health, your mood, who you meet, what you eat, and the things you do.

So all things considered, here are my 5 least favorite countries in the world (Djibouti, Chad, Guinea, Brunei and Guyana). I’d love to hear from you - have you been to any of these nations? What are your least favorite countries?

Must do in Gambia! 2 day tour ✈ 2020

The two-day Gambia trip of African Adventure tours brought us al among the Gambia river. Our tour guide brought us to spectacular places as a local market in Farafeni, the stone circles dating 2000 years back, a school, an amazing boat trip where we saw hippos, chimpanzees and many more beautiful wildlife creatures.

After a complete day, including breakfast, lunch and dinner, it was time to sleep in a basic but cosy lodge next to the Gambia river.

After breakfast, we visited Georgetown's slave house. On our way to the next stop, we saw hundreds of Bavarians and a hornbill (neushoornvogel) and a Cameleon on the road.

The lunch was more than delicious and cooked by a local lady. After visiting a real local Gambian family, our last stop was the Brikama craft market.

Two unforgettable days of exploring the Gambia!

Falling In Love In Banjul, Gambia 🇬🇲 You Won't Believe This! #Gambia,Africa Ep.6

Banjul is the capital city of the Gambia, a small West African country bordered by Senegal. The city sits on an island where the Gambia River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Its colonial buildings include the National Museum, dedicated to Gambian culture and history. Vendors at the lively Albert Market sell colorful textiles and local produce. The city's main entrance is marked by the immense, columned Arch 22 gateway.

I am on a mission to visit 21 countries in 2021 telling the African story the African way. So far I have done 6 countries. 15 remaining.

Guyana, a country on South America’s North Atlantic coast, is defined by its dense rainforest. English-speaking, with cricket and calypso music, it's culturally connected to the Caribbean region. Its capital, Georgetown, is known for British colonial architecture, including tall, painted-timber St. George’s Anglican Cathedral. A large clock marks the facade of Stabroek Market, a source of local produce.

Gambia travel guide - the best of The Gambia beyond the beach

Discovering the best of The Gambia on my short trip to the country in December - and finding there's far more than winter sun, with history, culture and everyday life to see in mainland Africa's smallest country. On my holiday with The Gambia Experience, I watched Gambian wrestling, traced the history of the slave trade, spotted crocodiles and kayaked through mangroves.

My trip was courtesy of The Gambia Experience - all opinions, and decision to make this video are my own. More posts at

Gambia - 2000

This is a Photo - Montage of my Trip to Gambia in 2000. Gambia is the smallest country in Africa, completely surrounded by its neighbour Senegal and was a former British colony, which gained independence in 1965. The country is some 600 miles long but only around 25 miles wide as it surrounds a lot of the length of the the mighty Gambia river.

The Gambia river was one of the main routes for deporting slaves from West Africa and it has slave holding points along the route mainly at Georgetown and James Island (Now renamed Kuntah Kintah Island) from where Slaves were then sent to Dakar (Senegal) to be shipped to the American continent. The slave Kuntah Kinteh came from the village of Juffre in Gambia where his ancestors still live.

The Gambian economy is made up largely of agriculture (Peanut farming) and tourism, which is growing rapidly. Gambia has two world heritage sites. The combined area of James Island (Now renamed Kuntah Kintah Island) along with the ex-French colonial village of Albreda and the ex-British colonial village of Juffre. The other WHS is on the north bank of the Gambia river near Janjanbureh at Wassu. This is the largest concentration of megalithic stone circles in the world spread out over a large area and contains more than 1000 stone circles.

Gambia has many species of monkey and birds and a healthy population of Hippo's in the Gambia river but the last Lion has now died.

This Photo - Montage was made with Windows Movie Maker and the music attached to it, called Explorer was taken from that software. I do not own copyright to this music nor is this video monetised.

All photos presented in this Photo - Montage were taken by me or somebody using my camera (self portraits) with the exception of the first three photos (Tourist Poster, Flag and Tourist Map). I do
not claim any copyright for the first three photos presented in this Photo - Montage.
