For my last week in Mexico we went on a big road trip in Chiapas for more than a week. Starting in Tuxtla we explored a number of beautiful sights and things to do in Chiapas which can hardly be found in guides. Of course we also wanted to visit popular sights such as Palenque but we managed to make our way down along the border to Guatemala to see the beautiful jungle and the maya sights of Bonampak & Yaxchilan which are harder to access.
You can take this video as a guide but please be aware to take some precaution and do your own research about road conditions / road blocks etc. before you go. Please make sure to avoid driving at night and plan your travel schedule accordingly!

Mexico Border Crossing from Belize, Bad Experiences with Viva Aerobus, Tacos, Tequila and Micheladas
We made it to #Mexico!
In this video, the Floppy Hat Adventure husbands rush through the #Mexican border from #Belize only to find out our flight from #Chetumel to #MexicoCity with @VivaAerobusMX has been delayed by SEVEN hours. We have definitely learned that #vivaaerobus is the low-cost airline in Mexico, and it is apparent from the experiences that we've had with them. So after waiting seven hours with no explanations as to why we were late, and flying for two, we finally arrive in Mexico City.
First order of business while we are here: #tacos, #tequila, and #michelada! Luckily the #Taquearte restaurant across the street from our Airbnb in #Cuauhtémoc was still open 😋.
Then, you will see us taking a stroll around Mexico City stopping at El Angel de Independencia (The Angel of Independence), having lengua elotes and pork belly at Porco Rosso, taking some pictures by the #CDMX sign, having more tacos, going to the Brooklyn #Speakeasy, riding bikes, we get some #drone footage, and finally, we head out to #Guadalajara on another delayed Viva Aerobus flight.
Make sure you stay tuned for a trip down the Tequila Road in #Jalisco.

Frontera Corozal, Usumacinta River, Mexico/Guatemala, North America
The Usumacinta River is a river in southeastern Mexico and northwestern Guatemala. It is formed by the junction of the Pasión River, which arises in the Sierra de Santa Cruz (in Guatemala) and the Salinas River, also known as the Chixoy, or the Negro, which descends from the Sierra Madre de Guatemala. It defines part of the border between Guatemala and the Mexican state of Chiapas, then continues its northwesterly course, meandering through the Mexican state of Tabasco to the Gulf of Mexico. After serving as a border between Mexico and Guatemala, the Usumacinta River enters Mexican territory in the state of Tabasco and across the Usumacinta Canyon ecological reserve, forming impressive canyons along its route. Passing the canyon called Boca del Cerro, Tenosique, the Usumacinta goes into the plain of Tabasco. In Tabasco, the Grijalva River flows into the Usumacinta River. This confluence is at Tres Brazos, Centla, and it forms a large wetland region known as the Wetlands of Centla. The Wetlands of Centla is also the name of a biosphere reserve in the area; it contains 302,702 hectares (747,990 acres), which makes it the largest protected wetland region in North and Central America and one of the top 15 wetlands (by size) in the world. The total length of the river, including the Salinas, Chixoy, Negro rivers in Guatemala is approximately 1,000 kilometres (620 mi). It is the only visible natural boundary separating the Yucatán Peninsula from Mexico. Frontera Corozal is a community located in the Ocosingo municipality in the northeast of Chiapas. It is a border town, located on the banks of the Usumacinta River across from Bethel, Guatemala. The town was founded in 1976 by Ch’ol migrants from northern Chiapas along with a small number of Lacandon and Tzeltal families. Relations among the ethnicities are mostly tranquil. The town and the immediate area consist of nine neighborhoods with about 11,000 inhabitants. Basic services are concentrated in the center of town near the river. The town celebrates the Festival of Corn (Fiesta del Elote) in August as well as a ceremony to ask for rain in May at the Tsolkinse caverns. The town is connected to Lacanja Chansayab, Chancalá and Palenque. It is connected to Palenque via Frontiza del Sur highway. The town is about 22 km off the Fronteriza highway. This drive used to be unsafe but security issues have significantly improved. There are vans that provide transportation to the docks from Palenque. The town was only connected to the rest of the country via paved roads in the mid-1990s, and most people use Guatemalan cell phones if they use phones at all, because the Mexican network does not reach here. The town is one of the most isolated which contains some tourism infrastructure. It is located near the archeological sites of Bonampak, Palenque and Piedras Negras in Guatemala. However, its most important function is its water connection to the otherwise inaccessible site of Yaxchilan, with just about every tour coming here bringing visitors for the site. The town has a main dock area, with small narrow boats called “lanchas” to ferry visitors to the archeological site 25 km downriver, as well as to Guatemala across the river. As an aquatic border crossing point (there is no bridge over the river), lanchas in Frontera Corozal bring people one way to the Guatemalan town of Bethel. From there, tours are available to the distant ruins of Tikal. The only government officials in Frontera Corozal or Bethel are respective border agents and it is necessary to check in with both in order to cross legally. Border crossers number between twenty and 120 people per day depending on the season. The town has several cooperatives of local residents operating tourism related businesses. One is Escudo Jaguar, which provides boat trips to Yaxchilan and more extensive tours to ruins farther away. There are some small simple hotels as well as camping areas. Nueva Alianza has cheaper and more rustic lodging along with small boats to Yaxchilan. It is operated by the Sociedad Cooperativa de Bienes y Servicios Nueva Alianza, which is a Ch’ol organization. The cooperative has wildlife, a nursery for crocodiles, lowland pacas and deer. There are other smaller cooperatives just along the docks with also provide boating services.

crossing the mexico / belize border in december 2021
we organised a taxi from Bacalar to the border with Jorge (dm me on insta for his details).
after our first stop (baggage check) we went to mexican emigration where they checked our FMM cards. they asked us about a tourism 'exit fee' (590 MXN each). generally your air fare into mexico covers this. we showed them our air fare breakdown and while it didn't explicitly state this fee, they wavered the charge. this could have been down to the fact that we had no cash on us and they were't accepting card (even though there was a card machine?!).
jorge then dropped us off just over the border where we met alberto. here we had to fill out 3 forms and have our temperatures checked. they also checked our accommodation bookings for the first 3 nights. after this alberto brought us to get our antigen test, which was 50 USD each. we had it in cash as we heard the card machine wasn't very reliable. once we tested negative, we went though belizean emigration where we were given a visa of 30 days.
alberto then dropped us off at our hotel (las palmas) in corozal, and he charged 35 USD. charlie at las palmas was very friendly and accommodating, and we would definitely recommed staying here en route to san pedro.

Amazing OVERLANDING through Chiapas | PanAmerican EP13
This is the second half of our Overlanding trip through Chiapas with our Toyota Tacoma and Four wheel camper Eagle.
See the first episode here:
For all Pan American enthusiasts:
Chiapas is our favorite state so far because of all it has to offer. There is so much to discover and so many hidden and not so hidden gems.
We leave Montebello lakes behind and head towards a gorgeous Waterfall Las Nubes. The hanging bridge above it and the Jungle hike with plenty of view points, make this a must see stop a long our way.
But the real adventure starts when we decide to reach the ruins of Yaxchillan. We arrive in Frontera Corazol and try to find a Lancha that can bring us to Yaxchillan.
The ruins of Yaxchillan are Very impressive and very secluded. We get up early and manage to get a Lancha quite easy.
After a 40min boat ride and 2hours at the ruins we are all alone and it is amazing.
We keep within the theme of ruins as we drive towards Palenque. Very popular and gorgeous ruins in the city of Palenque.

Walking the Corozal Town Waterfront │ Central America 🇧🇿
Come along for a tour along the waterfront in beautiful Corozal Town, Belize. Corozal Town is the northernmost town in the country of Belize. It is the first town you will encounter when entering Belize from Mexico. A peaceful, safe, and quiet town, good for a few days of relaxation or having some great local food and cold drinks.
It is also a transit point to the tourism Cayes (islands) where San Pedro and Caye Caulker are located. You can travel to the Cayes daily via water taxi or take the puddle jumper planes from Corozal. Sneaking into Belize 🇧🇿 WITHOUT Paying Mexican Tourist Tax 🇲🇽 | 16
To get from Bacalar, Mexico to Flores in Guatemala, I have to cross the Mexican-Belize border. This usually involves a tourist tax of roughly $25. Strangely enough, I was able to leave Mexico and enter Belize without paying. I advise not to pay the tax in advance but to wait until you leave the country.
In the evening I reach Guatemala and explore in a boat the lake that lies around the peninsula of Flores.

We crossed the Belize - Mexico Border
A little vlog of the border crossing trip by Will & Dustin. The day began with a flight over the Cayo district of Belize where Dustin met his new niece, Maddison. From there we jumped on a private charter from Caye to Corozal where our car was parked. Once we had our car we drove strait to the Mexico Belize border and began the process of crossing in to head up to Tulum & Playa Del Carmen.

Yaxchilan - Ancient Mayan Site - Well Known for Doorway Lintel Engravings - Travels With Phil
Yaxchilan is an ancient Maya site on the Usumacinta River on the border between Mexico and Guatemala. It was occupied from about 250 to around 900 CE. It's peak influence was in late 600s to mid 700s. Its first King & founder of the dynesty was installed in 359. Its major rival in the area were Piedras Negras, Tikal & Palenque at various times.
.
One of its outstanding archaeological features are the engraved stone lintels over many of the doorways. This video shows lost of them.
.
The modern name of Yaxchilan means Green Stones in one of the Maya dialects. It has also been called Pa'Chan, Broken Sky, Cleft Sky, Lorillard City and Menche.
.
There are three major groupings of buildings. Some archaeologists believe there was a 100 meter long suspension connecting Yaxchilan to the other side of the Usumacinta River. If it was as long as some speculate, it would have been the longest bridge of the ancient world until 1377.

Sitios mayas No. 8, 9 y 6.

Huffington Post:
BLOG POST:
Day 1. Playa del Carmen. Belize Border. Then into Belize. This is the plan at least. We expect that, being prepared, the Belize border should not be too difficult but with a strange and messed up immigration system in Mexico, I have a hold on my immigration process, therefore it is not the Belize border, but crossing OUT through the Mexican border that may cause the problem.
Either way, we departed Playa del Carmen for the final time, and did not have to go far to find our first obstacle. Barely 20 minutes down the road we had an issue with the car, which we overcame, but it definitely put us on high alert and made us realize that travel in a car, is much different than travel in a bus!
The Journey Plan:
Leaving Playa del Carmen:
Our destination on our first day, will be San Ignacio, Belize. A small town nestled in the hills and on a river, near the Belize border with Guatemala. Supposed to be a very cool town with some tourism, so should have a lot of availability for hotels, hostels or basically anywhere to rest our head, that should accept a dog like Winston.
Well to say that Day 1 was exciting, would be an understatement. The Mexican border was a stressful one. Basically, because my previous employers and the Mexican Immigration had messed up my visa TWICE, I was in limbo. Was eventually told I could leave as long as Belize let me it. The Belize border was a breeze. Even the fumigation of the car, the papers for Winston, which did cost more than expected, and importing the car. However, we did not get the mandatory insurance for the car. That proved to be a problem down the road.
One of the reasons I wanted to leave Playa del Carmen, and make this trip over the Belize border and farther south, was for an adventure, some excitement! If Day 1 of The Journey is to be any sort of foreshadowing for the trip, I have found myself a certain type of excitement, that is for sure.
