Exploring the Belly of the Dragon and some amazing road side finds from Colorado City Arizona to Fredonia Arizona. Let’s explore the Belly of the Dragon.
The Belly of the Dragon is a 100-yard man-made tunnel in Orderville, Utah that was originally built to drain rainwater under Highway 89. The tunnel's walls have an undulating texture that resembles a dragon's digestive tract, and some say it feels like walking within a dragon's ribcage.
The tunnel was originally dug as a drainage tunnel to allow rainwater to pass underneath the road. Over time, flooding has shaped the tunnel, creating a rippling effect. The tunnel was created by drainage from upper canyons carving a rib-like pattern into the sandstone. The tunnel itself is only .5 miles there and back and only takes about 10 minutes to walk through.
The Belly of the Dragon is a scenic, adventurous hike located 16 miles north of Kanab, Utah. The tunnel has a short hike through it, and you can continue up the wash for about 4 miles. The hike is generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 41 min to complete. The terrain can be uneven and muddy, and the initial start of the trail begins with a 5 foot descent. The floors are rocky and uneven after years of erosion, so walking this path requires some caution. You should not enter the tunnel under rainy conditions.
Some recommend bringing a flashlight or phone to guide your way if you are exploring this tunnel, especially before or after the early afternoon. You should also be respectful and do not add to the carvings in the sandstone walls. Always practice Leave No Trace principals and leave the places you visit the way you found them.

With a population of about of 1,300 (at the time of this recording) Fredonia is Arizona's northernmost town and the gateway to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The elevation of Fredonia is 1,426 metres (4,680 feet) at around the intersection of US Highway 89a and State Highway 389.

Fredonia is a town in Coconino County, Arizona, United States. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 1,314. Fredonia is the gateway to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
At 1.6 million acres (650,000 ha) the Kaibab National Forest borders both the north and south rims of the Grand Canyon, in north-central Arizona. It is divided into three major sections: the North Kaibab Ranger District (offices in Fredonia) and the South Kaibab which are managed by the United States Forest Service. The South Kaibab is further divided into two districts, the Tusayan Ranger District (offices in the Grand Canyon), and the Williams Ranger District (offices in Williams). Grand Canyon National Park separates the North Kaibab and the South Kaibab. The South Kaibab covers 1,422 square miles (3,680 km2) and the North Kaibab stretches over 1,010 square miles (2,600 km2). Elevations vary in the forest from 5,500 feet (1,676 m) in the southwest corner to 10,418 feet (3,175 m) at the summit of Kendrick Peak in the Williams Ranger District. The forest as a whole is headquartered in Williams.

Kaibab Camper Village in Fredonia Arizona is open from May 14 through October 15 and offers tent and RV camping in wooded setting. Full hookup RV sites are available along with partial and primitive hookups too. Situated in the Kaibab National Forest the park is located 1/2 mile off the Grand Canyon Highway via Forest Road 461. The short forest road is packed gravel and can be dusty so travel slow it is a short drive. The park is easily accessible for any size RV and offers excellent creature comforts in a unique and quiet setting. Multiple forest roads depart from this location allowing for miles of exploration in 4×4 or on bike (or foot). Group tent areas and regular tent areas have a rustic and forest service feel. Laundry and showers are available. Adjacent to a restored historic Ranger Station.
Advanced reservations recommended but they do have sites available in the dry backins or partial hookups on a pinch.

Arizona 389 is an isolated route that provides access to the Arizona Strip. The route begins at the Arizona/Utah state line in Colorado City, and travels across BLM lands to Fredonia, where it meets U.S. 89A.
Arizona 389 was added to the state highway system in 1960, and completed on August 11, 1967. Prior to the completion of Arizona 389, Colorado City was not on the state highway system.
