10 Most UNDERRATED and OVERRATED Places To Visit In Italy!

If you're thinking of visiting Italy and want to make sure that you see the best it has to offer and avoid the hype, look no further. Here are Italy's Most Underrated and Overrated Destinations.
First up are the most underrated.

1. Castelli Romani.
Castelli Romani is a series of 14 small towns southeast of Rome in the Alban Hills. Each little town has its own distinct beauty and strong points, be it the Volcanic Lake of Nemi, or the Lake Di Albano, the bread from Genzano, the roast pig from Ariccia, or the beautiful park in Frascati, its easy to see why the Pope's have their summer home here and also why it's one of Rome's best-kept secrets.

2. Urbino.
Urbino is a walled city in the Marche region of Italy, Urbino is similar to Tuscany but cheaper and with about a quarter of the tourists. Rich in history and art, walking through its streets will take you back 600 years to the Renaissance then you can sit at one of its many restaurants to try its trademark pasta and wine, Strozzapreti, and Verdicchio white wine.

3. Procida.
Procida is a little island off the coast of Naples. If you are looking for the old romantic Italy, white sand beaches, colorful fishing boats in a quaint harbor, and a rainbow of houses lining the streets, then Procida is the place to go, Procida is like Capri but without the Jet-set, no designer shops or fancy spas, just traditional Italian beauty without the glitter on top.

4. Arcipelago Di La Maddalena.
The Maddalena archipelago is a group of seven islands in the Strait of Bonifacio, only three of them are inhabited, Caprera, Santo Stefano, and Maddalena, Maddalena is also a national park, its beautiful coastline, hospitable people, and ancient fortifications are just some of the reasons its a popular holiday destination for the Italians, especially among boaters.

5. Turin.
Turin is a different side of Italy, unlike the romantic towns that represent the simple slower lifestyle of fishermen and farmers, Turin is the industrial side of Italy, where the rich built their palaces, the religious built their cathedrals, and the studious built their museums. Turin has so much to offer that you'll need at least 2 to 3 days there just to begin to appreciate it.

Now The Most Overrated!

1. Milan.
Milan may be famous for fashion but the city itself is rather depressing, most of its architecture was destroyed during WWII, and of what is left, only The Milan Cathedral is really worth a visit but even that feels a little too modern. In Milan, it seems that the weather, the architecture, and the cuisine strive to be noticed by differing from the Italian norm but end up being a little too dull to really stand out.

2. Capri.
Capri is beautiful but its popularity with the rich and famous has damaged it greatly, It gives the feeling of an exclusive club with a dress code to get in. If you aren't rich, you probably won't feel comfortable and if you are rich, seeing so many cookie-cutter versions of yourself will probably make you feel uncomfortable too! especially when you can visit Procida and get the Caprician experience without having to deal with Capricious people.

3. Trieste.
Trieste is one e short of triste which means sad in Italian and this is, in fact, a rather good description of the city. Trieste has a high living standard, it's popular with students and researchers, it's plagued by the Bora, a cold wind coming from the north that can reach speeds of up to 80mph (129kph) and can last for days, its architecture is large and yet oddly unimpressive, and it is also one of the safest cities in the world. If you are thinking of living here then it is probably the ideal location, but for a vacation, Trieste is a little too, Triste.

4. Costa Smeralda.
The Emerald Coast is another one of those locations that became popular with the extremely rich and famous and has now become the go-to place for the not-so rich and famous and the We'd like people to think we're rich and famous. Prices are high all year round but in August they become abusive. This gives you the feeling of a place that isn't really Italian but has been made to look Italian, like little Italy in New York or Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, what the Emerald Coast has gained in notoriety it has lost in authenticity, and what once was a Gem is now nothing more than cut glass!

5. Cortona.
Cortona became famous because of the book Under The Tuscan Sun. It is now visited by thousands of people trying to relive the story and search out the locations mentioned within the book's pages, this may all seem very romantic, but the truth is that quaint towns like Cortona are dotted all over Italy and when compared to them, Cortona doesn't really have anything special to offer, unless of course, you enjoy walking down old stones streets with hundreds of other tourists.

ITALY - FRASCATI near ROME - THE TRAVEL BUG FEELING

In this video we explore the surroundings of Rome and we go up to Frascati, a wonderful small town with loads of restaurants and pubs to enjoy the nice hot weather of Rome in July. What a cool place to visit if you want to escape from the big flock of people!!

Places to see in ( Frascati - Italy )

Places to see in ( Frascati - Italy )

Frascati, in Lazio at a short distance from Rome, is a popular daytrip destination from the capital. Frascati is one of several attractive historic hilltowns to the south-east of Rome known collectively as the Castelli Romani. Every weekend these towns, and Frascati in particular, fill up with Romans looking for a change of pace, clean air, good food and wine. Often groups of Romans will drive here just for the evening, dining at one of the many informal restaurants which serve rich regional specialities and the local white wine.

The air is noticeably fresher than in the city, and in the sweltering summer months it has always been a popular resort. The wealthy built villas here, many of which are still standing although they're not open to the public. The most impressive is the Villa Aldobrandini, designed by Giacomo Della Porta for the nephew of a pope. This palace dominates the town, hovering above the central piazza in faded splendour. The gardens are open to the public and are free to visit - you just need to collect a permit from the tourist office first. On a weekday the grounds may be completely empty, and you can explore the terraces in solitary state. A gigantic water feature (no longer functioning), sculptures and architectural follies dominate the gardens behind the Villa, and you can climb up beside the crumbling cascade and imagine the estate in its glittering heyday.

The Villa Torlonia, nearby, was destroyed in the war. Nowadays it is a public park, where office workers jog in their lunch hour. You can still admire the gardens, and an impressive fountain, the Teatro delle acque (water theatre), designed by Carlo Maderno. The cathedral is worth a look, as are some of Frascati's other churches. There's no tourist circuit of important sights in Frascati. The chief appeal of an excursion is the relaxing ambience, fine feasting, and wandering around the evocative medieval streets and the faded grandeur of the aristocratic past.

Frascati is 13 miles (21km) from Rome, and is easily reachable by public transport. COTRAL buses run frequently from Anagnina metro station (remember to buy your tickets in advance from the kiosk at Anagnina, and to validate them when you get on the bus). For more information about COTRAl buses, see the Lazio transport page. There is also a local train service from Rome, which leaves from Stazione Termini.

The Frascati tourist information office is situated on the main square, Piazza Marconi. This is where the buses from (and to) Rome stop. There is also a panoramic terrace and a gelateria close at hand, so it's a good place to sit down and get your bearings when you arrive. Both the tourist office and the gardens of Villa Aldobrandini are closed for a couple of hours at lunchtime.

( Frascati - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Frascati . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Frascati - Italy

Both within 100 km from Rome, reachable by walking on the Via Francigena, Montefiascone and Viterbo are two pearls. The first one on a higher position by the beautiful Lake Bolsena, has been a very important center of the State of the Church. The second one, which has also hosted the headquarters of the Papal States, has an incredibly broad and well maintained Medieval city center. Just to give you a little hint if you're the average tourist who skips from Rome to Florence...you're missing out.

Tasting Life - Season 1 - Episode 10 - The Food of Frascati

While visiting Luigi Fusco and the Merumalia Wine Resort, I decided to stop for lunch in the town of Frascati! What a great decision! I had one of the best Roman meals of my life! I enjoy traditional, simple food prepared and served in an unassuming way. And that is exactly what I had at Cantina Bucciarelli.

How much does a 2 week trip to Italy cost?

We just finished up a 2 week trip to Italy, and here's the breakdown of exactly how much it all cost. All these figures are for 2 people, and there's a lot of variability in the prices, so be sure to watch this one all the way to the end to get most accurate figure. Oh yeah, and if you want to check out our Skillshare course to save you thousands on flights, the link is here, and the first 500 to use it can get Skillshare free for a month!

We ended up taking trains from Rome to Florence to Venice to Genoa and Cinque Terre. I definitely think that taking the train around Italy is the best and most efficient way to see everything, by far. You can fly from Rome to Venice, or Rome to Genoa, but doing so would honestly take longer than just taking the train, adding up all the time to get out to the airport and back, and waiting at the airport itself. Trains are the way to go.

One of the things that surprised us the most is just how expensive hotels have gotten - it seems like just about every budget or lower-end hotel just... disappeared over the last year. That makes me super sad, to see an entire class of accomodation not be able to make it through the pandemic. Also, Airbnb's were extremely expensive - not for their nightly rates, but for all of the additional Airbnb fees + cleaning fees. It seems like Airbnb has really been cranking up their fees recently, and I can't really recommend staying at any of them in Italy, it just doesn't make financial sense here.

Also, even though it pains me so, so, so much to watch - check out the very end for a rare behind the scenes look at how we make our travel thursday song, lol :)
