Discover Fréjus / Saint-Raphaël France | 90 + Countries with 3 Kids

Welcome to Saint Raphael / Fréjus, France!

If you are looking for a calm seaside resort on the French Riviera, where you can unwind and relax, without feeling “obligated” to party every night (like in Saint Tropez, for example), Saint Raphael is the best choice you can make.

It is located just a few kilometers south-east of Frejus, in the shadow of the Massif de l'Esterel. If you want to spend your time in a town that has a long tradition of tourism, you will be glad to find out this is one of the oldest resorts on the coast. Wealthy Romans used to spend their summers in Saint Raphael 2000 years ago! It is clean and well-maintained and has only a small harbour.

Saint Raphael is not really a historic town like its neighboring Frejus; however, as a lively and popular resort, it has lovely beaches right in the town centre!

Top 10 Must See Places in Southern France

Top 10 must see places in Southern France.

Welcome to the French Riviera! Some people have a hard time imagining France as being a super beautiful and almost tropic country, what with all the focus around Paris, but the south of France has some spectacular places and the weather is just unreal.

I have yet to visit France, but I know the time will come and yes, I’ll likely start the travels in Paris. However, I’m totally drawn to the southern parts for the climate and geography. And the fact there are SO many awesome places to see. I mean driving along the French Riviera seems like something that only the rich and famous do so it almost feels like I could never do it. Guess I can’t wait to prove that image wrong and after look at this top 10 list, it was painful to cut a bunch off. I think I had over 30 places to start with so maybe I’ll have to revisit this area down the road.

Oh, and don’t worry. I’m fully aware that a couple of these are a little more central/western France, but hey who is counting. Either way I hope you enjoy the video and consider subscribing if that’s something that interests you. Thanks for watching!

Fréjus, côte d'Azur france 2022

Places to see in ( Frejus - France )

Places to see in ( Frejus - France )

Fréjus is a port town on the Côte d'Azur, southeastern France. Its Roman ruins include an amphitheater, theater and aqueduct. Roman artifacts are displayed in the Archaeological Museum. The Gothic, centuries-old Saint-Léonce Cathedral has painted cloisters and a baptistry with Roman columns. Northeast, Notre-Dame de Jérusalem Chapel was designed by Jean Cocteau in the 1960s. South of the center is sandy Fréjus Beach.

Frejus is in the Var department of Provence, just inland from Saint-Raphael on the Cote d'Azur. As the coast and region around Fréjus has become developed there is little to separate Fréjus and Saint-Raphael. Frejus has a long and illustrious past dating back to pre-Roman times, and 2000 years ago it was already an important trade centre and port. The sea has now receded so the main port is now at Saint Raphael and Fréjus-Plage.

Frejus has a calm, pretty town centre to explore and merits a visit when you are visiting the region. The medieval centre of Frejus is centred around the Place Formagé where the cathedral of Saint Léonce and the town hall occupy two sides of the square. The town hall was originally the bishop’s palace and is painted a pale orange colour. From the square you can stroll down the side streets that contain more pastel-painted houses and shops.

The Cathedral of Saint-Leonce is very much the highlight of your visit to Frejus. A small cathedral in an attractive, simple style the main building dates from the 12th century. You will first notice the decorative carvings around the doorway, but it is inside the cathedral that the greatest treasure can be found, with a baptistry and 12th century cloisters. Frejus was one of the first centres of Christianity in France and the baptistry dates from the 5th century. Very unusual, it dates from the time when baptism required full body immersion*, with a large central well in which believers would be completely submerged.

There is an attractive 15th century church - the Church of Saint Maximinus - in Frejus. You will also see scattered Roman remains in the town, including the remains of the aquaduct. Both the amphitheatre and the theatre are still used for summer time events, although the ampitheatre is smaller than those of Nimes and Arles and in a dilapidated condition.

Sooner or later visitors to Frejus will find themselves at the port or the beach! The port is modern and pleasant to explore, with some of the architecture in the style of traditional pastel coloured Provencal houses. Although the port gives little clue to its long history it is a pleasant place for a waterside promenade. There is a choice of beaches here, most are of sand and some are supervised in summer so you are sure to find one that is ideal for you.

Sun lovers will want to head just down the road to the beach where Frejus Plage merges into the more up-market coastal resort of Saint Raphael. Among the natural highlights close to Frejus, the Massif d'Esterel and the coast road between the massif and the sea are both very scenic. You can find more local travel ideas in the Var guide and the Provence guide.

( Courchevel - France ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Courchevel . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Courchevel - France
