Fort Frances, Ontario, Canada
Fort Frances was the first European settlement west of Lake Superior and was established by French Canadian Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, sieur de La Vérendrye, first commander of the western district. In 1731, he built Fort Saint Pierre near that spot as support for the fur trade with native peoples. In 1732, his expedition built Fort Saint Charles on Magnuson's Island on the west side of Lake of the Woods. After some time, Fort Saint Pierre fell out of use.

International Falls, MN | A 4K City Walking Tour
International Falls, MN is located on the Rainy River directly across from Fort Frances, Ontario, Canada. The two cities are connected by the Fort Frances–International Falls International Bridge. Voyageurs National Park is located 11 miles east of International Falls. There is a major U.S. Customs and Border Protection Port of Entry on the International Falls side of the toll bridge and a Canadian Customs entry point on the north side of the bridge. International Falls is nicknamed the Icebox of the Nation,” with an average of 109.4 days per year with a high temperature below 32 °F (0 °C).
The area now known as International Falls was inhabited by many indigenous peoples. The International Falls area was well known to explorers, missionaries, and voyagers as early as the 17th century. It was not until April 1895 that the community was platted by L. A. Ogaard, a teacher and preacher for the Koochiching Company, and named Koochiching. The word “Koochiching” comes from either the Ojibwe word Gojijiing or the Cree Kocicīhk, both meaning “at the place of inlets,” referring to the neighboring Rainy Lake and River. The European inhabitants gave the names Rainy Lake and Rainy River to the nearby bodies of water because of the mist-like rain present at the falls where the lake flowed into the river. On August 10, 1901, the village was incorporated and two years later its name was changed to International Falls in recognition of the river's role as a border between the United States and Canada. It was incorporated as a city in 1909.

Fort Frances, Ontario, Canada
A border town; Fort Frances is at the beginning of everything. Fort Frances has always been the industrial capital of Northwest Ontario, and Fort Frances will strengthen that role. Fort Frances is more than a mill town and Fort Frances will be so much more than a mining town – aided by the lowest cost power and the most affordable industrial land in Ontario. Fort Frances is the diversified industrial heartbeat of forestry, mining, agriculture, and tourism.

Taking my big sister flying in Raven, Fort Frances for lunch
I have been bugging my sister to come flying with me for some time now, and after dodging every opportunity to come aviating, she finally caved in and said yes.
Now, to be fair, our last flight together ended with a few stressful moments for both of us. While we were in the circuit at the Kenora Airport, a Bald Eagle swooped down at the C172 we were flying in and impacted the top of the vertical stabilizer! (I read somewhere shortly after that eagles are territorial and have been known to attack small airplanes). So I think she was still a little hesitant to fly with me after that.
but, by the end of the day she was loving it, and before I could even get home, she had already texted me When are we going again?

Information regulations about crossing border into Ontario Canada from USA bring liquor beer tobacco cigars over the Ontario Border
Speaker: Planning a trip to Canada, you may want to consider a number of different things about your border crossing. When crossing into Canada, the first thing you should consider is identification, it's not mandatory to have a passport to enter Canada, but as a US citizen, Canadian citizen, or permanent resident of either country there are a number of other documents that you can use, enhanced drivers license, citizenship cards, passport cards, nexus cards, birth certificate, along with the photo identity document will also facilitate your entry into Canada. If traveling with children, you may want to bring identity documents for those children, if they are very young, copy of their birth certificate, a notarized copy will suffice, you may also want to bring a letter from mom or dad, if it happens to be grandpa or grandmother that are traveling with the children, or if there are custodial arrangements involved with the children.
If you travel with prescription drugs, make sure that you do have a copy of the prescription with you, and they are in the original prescription bottles, persons wanting to travel with pets to Canada, make sure that you are traveling with a rabies certificate for the dog or cat, for those pets that are over three months old, if they are younger than three months, they don't require any type of documentation.

You may bring a carton of cigarettes, 50 cigars, and or 200 grams of processed tobacco. You may bring along your recreational vehicles, campers, boats, motors. Canada Border Service Agency does expect that you will be returning all those items to the United States, they can't stay between trips, without our authorization, so if you did want to leave one of those items, check with us at the border.
You may import night crawlers and bedding, currently you can't import any leeches, nor can you import live minnows, you may bring minnows in a salted or frozen format. Speaker: But when entering Canada you may find yourself subject to a more detailed examination, please be patient, its part of the process, we are in fact verifying the declaration that you made to the officer when you first pulled up. Normally we will help repack your vehicle depending on our time constraints, please make those items in your vehicle accessible for the officers, in case they do want to examine them, they may remove a number of items, and you know, go through the different items in your vehicle, like I said it is a routine examination, and please be patient.
The main entry ways to North Western Ontario Sunset Country are Pigeon River, south of Thunder Bay at the west end of Lake Superior, Fort Frances border crossing, and the Rainy River Port of entry, which is close to the border of Manitoba. Those are the three main entry points to North Western Ontario, and they probably handle combined about 1.7 to 1.8 million travelers a year through those three ports of entry.
