Home to a population of approximately 150,000, Port Louis is a melting pot of cultures and history. Phoenix Mauritius, the Mall, bridges, Jurassic world and the old station
Phoenix on a glorious sunny day is a beautiful place to visit. With its huge malls with everything you need to the quiet back streets filled with surprises, it will entice you in. The old bridges set in tranquil parks, the huge and secretive houses, a famous brewery, the train station, and a sad cannon all add to the magic.
We started at Phoenix Mall, packed with shops, food, hairdressers, and a giant Jumbo. Our first destination in the mall was the food. We got a steaming hot bowl of boullette with a variety of goodies. For pudding, we had our first Portuguese egg tart and cronut. I had no idea someone had decided to mix a donut and a croissant together to make a delicious thing called a cronut. The lashings of chocolate made it the sweet treat we needed to traverse the kilometers of the mall.
It was great to see so many people shopping, there was a real bustle in the mall. As we walked the entire length we noticed the subtle change in design, a cunning plan by the architect to make it feel like a new area as you go. We made it to the end having passed every shop you can name including a mega Jumbo store. Then it was the long walk back to the car, past the Macdonald's and an external KFC drive-through.
Out on the road, we stumbled onto the Palmerston bridge, built in 1866. We had planned to visit this bridge but had no idea where it was. The bridge has great stonework, but the Jurassic World it is situated in was a thing to behold. I could almost see the dinosaurs scuttling around in this quiet corner of the city. After this lucky find, we abandoned our plans and drove around waiting for the next surprise.
It didn't take long and we were stopped in a suburb with beautiful houses and a dance academy. They shared a wall with a secret bank that has to have the best driveway in the country. We couldn't see much of the mansion, but driving around it for a better view brought us to another great old bridge. The steel girders that once supported the walkway or narrow-gauge rail were truly huge. It contrasted dramatically with the razorwire fence of the secret bank.
Crossing another road we came to the most famous of Phoenix's residences, what probably gave the town its name, Phoenix brewery. We couldn't get in, but the park behind had a great view of the steel tanks, and just being close to that much beer warmed my heart, oh and there were more bridges.
Then onto the sad part of the day, the old Phoenix railway station. For years it was the home of MUGs, the Mauritius Underwater Group, the oldest scuba diving club in Mauritius. The building was beautiful, and in my normal fashion I kept a stiff up lip, but the sad future of the magnificent building was ever-present in Riki. The pride of the club, its cannon, and anchor were buried out back in a shallow grave.
We closed out the great day on a sad note, but Phoenix can never really leave you in the dumps, it is simple to full of life.

Mauritius Vacation Travel Video Guide • Great Destinations
The little island, lying in the center of the Indian Ocean is a real tropical paradise. Along the white sand beaches, shaded by coconut palm trees there are many luxury hotels. We can take excursions to the nearby islands, or take a dive in the turquoise blue water. In the center of the island, on the top of a vulcanic plateau, emerald green sugar cane plantations can be found. On the Domaine Les Pailles estate we can have a glimpse at how rum and sugar are produced from sugar cane. We can try the Indian dishes and take a look at the colorful Hindu temple. We might enjoy the Sega dance and taste the teas from the Bois Cheri plantation. We might also take a Jeep Tour through the Black River National Park and take a look at the marvellous waterfall of Chamarel, while in the zoo the famous pink pigeon and the golden bat can be found. In the city there is the Blue Penny Museum and one of the worlds most beautiful tropical parks, the Pamplemousses Botanic Garden to visit.

Adventure of Sugar, top tourist attraction in Mauritius
We visited the famous tourist attraction the Adventure of Sugar or L'Aventure du Sucre, as it is officially called. As one of the top must-do tourist attractions in Mauritius, we were expecting big things and boy did it deliver. Starting from the outside with a train and huge sugar mill equipment I was like a kid in a candy store. The adventure comes to life in the museum, it is very well done, taking you from the beginning of Mauritius all the way through the history and actually letting you walk through the internal workings of a mill until you finally leave, with sugar and rum tasting.

Grand Baie beach Mauritius 🇲🇺!! beautiful seaside in Mauritius 🇲🇺
The B52 Roadtrip, the most remote road in Mauritius
Road Trippin' with my favourite allies, time to get away and get lost. The B52 is the most remote road in Mauritius, it runs through the center of the island where almost nothing is marked on the map. We explore it all, from a cow sanctuary, tea estates, abandoned buildings, two dams, and a lot of walking. It was a real discovery trip, that is not to be missed.
It started at a roundabout, and a hidden toilet in a place called Belle Rive, which boasts the SSR Medical Collage and a spinning factory, not the exercise stuff, the thread kind, as its main attractions, well, its only attractions, but it did have a great view of Piton du Milieu Mountain, the mountain in the middle.
Our first stop was the Piton du Milieu resivour. A large dam that supplies water to the CWA (the Mauritian water guys). It was the first of many treats along the way. They had wild raspberries, even though I kept calling them strawberries. The ripe ones were the perfect supplement to our snack supplies. And boy did we need them, the stair were designed for fit people. Before we tackled the stairs, there was the mystery of the tunnel disappearing into the dam wall. This was solved when we made our way to the top. There is a jetty that has a huge hole to the bottom of the dam.
We got some great views of the mountain in the middle, very impressive with, what Riki referred to as, elephant skin on the one side and it did look a little like a dinosaur tooth sticking up. We found the home of the Law of Attraction academy, or it might have been a hunting lodge. Remember your gumboots in the wet season, the road does have a lot of water on it, and there might be fish. Oh yes, and they weren't planting ferns, it was in fact carrots.
We met the mother of the whole universe, it's a cow, at the Krishna cow sanctuary. The nice man let us play with the cows and bulls. Govern, one of the bigger bull, though I smelt funny. After I learned the whole sequence of mothers in the universe and the secret to a new body we headed off to the most remote village in Mauritius, Dubreuil, but that is for another video.
Midlands dam is really impressive. With a 2.5 kilometer wall, it is no slouch in the dam department and a great piece of engineering. This bastion of water security is also the kickoff point to some great hikes in the middle of nowhere, literally. We complained a lot about walking, but it really was a worthwhile visit. Our next stop was Midlands sugar mill chimney.
I performed the worst Scottish accent on record as I discussed James Curry, the original owner and the guy who started Melville oyster farm. This was also the place that the Duke of Edinburgh bagged 40 deer in 1890, now a shooting range. Samlo steel reclamation yard is right next door, where they transform all the old steel in Mauritius into other interesting metal things and try to keep their road from flooding with a very overworked dam wall.
We stumbled upon the old La Chartreuse tea factory, now an overgrown abandoned building. This would be a great place to explore with a little more equipment and a few energetic friends, as it was, Riki got attacked by some swallows, so we left.
I started the montage at the Midlands sign, but we only danced, and there wasn't an actual montage. We saw a few more things of interest, a sheer cliff wall, Domaine Dam wedding place, and heard some hunting dogs. We arrived at a bridge at the start of Midlands village, which also marked the end of the B52 road and our road trip. After meeting up with a few old friends from along the journey we bid goodbye and drove off into the sunset.
The B52 is more than a road, it seems to be a state of mind. For a short 8 kilometer stretch in the middle of nowhere, it really does have a lot to offer. I'm not saying you are going to find yourself spiritually along it, unless you are a cow, but I think you will find a great trip and one that is worth doing. Go get lost in the middle.
Let us know what you think of the new thumbnail style.

Beau Bassin Mauritius Vlog
Beau Bassin is a great place for a walk around and a bite to eat. With the arrival of the metro, this area has become a restaurant and shopping hub. Grand River South East Mauritius Vlog
We explore the Grand River South East area or GRSE as everyone seems to call it. We started at the dock where we met a local guy Steve with his boat, Andre. We then walked around the Laguna Beach Hotel and flew the drone over it. Next up was the hunt for food.
Luckily an old BMW 318i stopped us at a great snack shop called Site shop on Google maps. We ate great fish roti and the best-fried chicken in Mauritius. A quick stop at the fish landing and ferry point to look around. I got some solar-powered ice cream.
We continued and got to a lookout point full of monkeys and met Louis. We flew the drone over the waterfall and then headed to the sugar mill, Deep water Beau champ. It was an epic adventure.

A fascinating destination restaurant - Domaine Vale
Over the years many people have said we must go to this incredible restaurant in the Vale but we never managed to find where it was. Thank you Steve and Jan for guiding us there and joining us for a fantastic lunch and sharing your stories of Domaine in the Vale and how it has evolved over the decades. This is a must visit destination restaurant but make a booking as they are very popular.
There is a wide variety of dishes on the menu and all is reasonably priced and excellent quality. We had the octopus salad served in a huge benitier shell, crispy calamari and the chilli chicken. It seems no matter where you look, you always see something you hadn't spotted before in the restaurant.

Fruit and vegetable market - Pamplemousses, Mauritius
Pamplemousses market is a great beginner market. It doesn't have the huge hustle and bustle of some of the other markets, but it really is worth a visit. The street food section has some great food, a lot of which were new to us. Prepare to queue if you want a good dhal puri and when you get one they are very good. The veg section is all laid out under kiosks, giving it a great open-air feel. Down the side are all the clothes and assorted knickknacks. Come early on a Sunday morning it is open from 4am to 11am.
