Saint Etienne is a city in eastern central France, in the Massif Central, 55 km (34 mi) southwest of Lyon in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, on the trunk road that connects Toulouse with Lyon. Saint-Étienne is the capital of the Loire department and has a population of approximately 172,023 (2013) in the city itself and over 508,000 in the metropolitan area (2011).

Named after Saint Stephen, the city first appears in the historical record in the Middle Ages as Saint-Étienne de Furan (after the River Furan, a tributary of the Loire). In the 13th century, it was a small borough around the church dedicated to Saint Etienne. On the upper reaches of the Furan, near the Way of St. James, the Abbey of Valbenoîte had been founded by the cistercians in 1222. In the late 15th century, it was a fortified village defended by walls built around the original nucleus.

The city's football club AS Saint-Étienne has won the Ligue 1 title a record ten times, achieving most of their success in the 1970s. British indie-dance band Saint Etienne named themselves after the club. St. Étienne has many sports stadiums, the largest being Stade Geoffroy-Guichard used for football and Stade Henri-Lux for athletics. St. Étienne was the capital of the French bicycle industry. The bicycle wheel manufacturer Mavic is based in the city and frame manufacturers Motobécane and Vitus are also based here. The city often hosts a stage of the Tour de France. St. Étienne resident Thierry Gueorgiou is a world champion in orienteering. The local rugby union team is CA Saint-Étienne Loire Sud Rugby.

The nearest airport is Saint-Étienne - Bouthéon Airport which is located in Andrézieux-Bouthéon, 12 km (7.46 mi) north-northwest of Saint-Étienne. The main railway station is Gare de Saint-Étienne-Châteaucreux, which offers high speed services to Paris, Lyon (Saint-Étienne–Lyon railway), and several regional lines.Saint-Étienne is also notable for its tramway (Saint-Étienne tramway) – which uniquely with Lille, it kept throughout the 20th century – and its trolleybus system (Saint-Étienne trolleybus system) – which is one of only three such systems currently operating in France.

Bus and tram transport is regulated and provided by the Société de Transports de l'Agglomération Stéphanoise (STAS), a public transport executive organisation. The bicycle sharing system Vélivert with 280 short term renting bicycles has been available since June 2010.

Places to see in ( Annecy - France ) Basilique de la Visitation

The Basilica of the Visitation , erected on the crêt Moor, which is the first foothills of the Massif Semnoz appears as dominant Annecy and mark every place of kilometers around. It is the symbol of the prestigious religious past of the city. The basilica was built from 1909 to 1930 on the plans of the Grenoble architect Alfred-Henri Recoura . A first project, already completed, was directed by Henry Ade at the end of the xix th century, but was nevertheless rejected in favor of the current basilica, which however Henri Adé drew the crypt.

The place of worship was consecrated in 1949 by Cardinal Tedeschini . It is adjacent to the Mother House Monastery of the Order of the Visitation , founded in 1610 by François de Sales and Jeanne de Chantal. The bodies of the two saints lie at the top of the two lateral naves, in two gilded bronze sarcophagi. They were deposited there with great pomp, the August 2 , 1911Escorted by an immense crowd from Annecy who dedicate a particular cult to Francis, whose work in 1602 to 1622 as bishop of Geneva in exile in Annecy , illuminated the city of unprecedented splendor.

The basilica was built in the typical style of the late xix th century . The bell tower has a height of 72 meters and is surmounted by a bronze cross of 7 meters . The nave rests on a crypt with lowered arches, designed by Henri Adé . The vault was built semicircular. The windows of the basilica evoke the life of the two founding saints. It has a carillon of 38 bells weighing 8 tons . The drone, a bell named Marie Françoise weighs 4 tons and sounds a false La2. The carillon is classified as historical monuments. Two Christs in cross surmounting two altars are the work of the statuary Philippe Besnard (1949).

Housed in an annex of the monastery, the Salesian Museum perpetuates the history of the Order of the Visitation , of Joan of Chantal , and the life and work of Francis de Sales. A memorial Saint-François de Sales was built in the premises of the former monastery of the Visitation, on the flank of the current church Saint-François in the old town of Annecy .

Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut à Ronchamp

In building this church, I wanted to create a place of silence, prayer, peace, and inner joy.

In a small rural village in eastern France, built on a gentle mountaintop, you can’t help but feel solemn as you look out over the quiet and peaceful rural landscape. Ronchamp, famous for the ‘Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut’ by ‘Le Corbusier,’ the father of modern architecture and the greatest architect of the 20th century, is a small village with a developed mining industry.

The chapel, located on a 472m high hill overlooking the surrounding lush forest, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016 for its lighting, form, and unique spatial beauty. It is a masterpiece that embodies the philosophy and aesthetics of architect Le Corbusier and is a place of pilgrimage for architecture students.

During World War II, in September 1944, the old chapel was destroyed by German bombing, and Le Corbusier was asked to design a new church… The architect, who had refused from the beginning, was persuaded by the persistent persuasion of local priest Lucien Ledeur, who visited the site on June 4, 1950 and accepted the project, captivated by the expansive view and the location.

Construction began on September 8, 1953, and was completed on June 25, 1955. The various angles and spaces that are visible when approaching the church required the construction of an indoor chapel that can accommodate 200 people and three small annex chapels, as well as an outdoor worship space that can accommodate about 2,000 people, at a low cost.

The thick, sloping curved walls that support the massive ship-shaped roof ensure safety, and although the thickness is not the same, and in some places it is over 3 meters, the space created by the light coming in through the thick walls that are pierced at angles to consider the movement of light is fantastic. In addition, a thin gap is created between the roof and the walls, giving the feeling of being slightly floating in the air.

The interior and exterior walls are finished with concrete sprayed to give a rough and rough finish, and the wood grain pattern of the formwork remains, using the exposed concrete technique. Compared to the early days when Le Corbusier adhered to rational functionalism, we can imagine how much the unique form of the Longchamp Church, which emphasized plasticity, confused people.

Places to see in ( Metz - France ) Saint Pierre aux Nonnains Basilica

The basilica of Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains is a pre-medieval church building in Metz, France. It began life as a Roman gymnasium, or secondary school, in the 4th century AD, making it one of the oldest churches in Europe.

The building was originally built in 380 AD as part of a Roman spa complex. In the 7th century, the structure was converted into a church, becoming the chapel of a Benedictine nunnery.

A new nave was constructed in the 11th century with further interior renovations. In the 16th century, the building became a warehouse, and remained so until the 1970s, when it was restored and opened for concerts and exhibitions.
