Base XI:2 World War I impressive base in Helsinki - Exploring the 85 m bunker!

#IgorInRussia #ww1 #wwI #Helsinki
In my Sveaborg series I am exploring the entire world war I land and sea front in Finland with 37 land front bases, closer to 100 defense stations. Subscribe to my channel!

Russian Sveaborg mainland front in Finland (1914-1918)
To defend Helsinki during the First World War, a chain of fortifications was constructed around the current Espoo, Helsinki and Vantaa city areas. The primary purpose of the mainland front was to protect St. Petersburg should German forces attack across the Finnish mainland and to defend the very important Sveaborg sea fortress and naval base (Suomenlinna) off the coast of Helsinki.

The fortifications were build by Russian soldiers, Finnish labour and even asian prisoners.
The fortifications were mostly unused in the end, so they are still in good conditions and easy to explore.

Here's a good introduction video about the fortress:

Base XI: defense station 2
The trenches constructed on Ormusmäki hill is a system consisting of 4 caves and complicated trenches and fire positions. They represent a construction style of late WWI where caves were built for increasing safety protecting the soldiers.

There is 30 metres of trenches, 1 machine gun nest adn 2 observation stations - one connected with a small bunker, all made out of concrete. In the west of the base there is 2 caponiers positions prepaired but left unfinished.

Southern cave is 85 square metres big. It is equipped with a hallway. At the far end there is a stairway leading to the tunnel located at the center of the base (on top).

The cave in the center has 2 entrances and has (currently) blocked entrance into the southern cave.
Eastern cave is 20 square metres big
The western cave is 23 square metres. There is a hole leading to the cave from above/or to surface.

INSIDE soviet submarine Narodovolets D-2 I Full tour

#IgorInRussia #Russia #SaintPetersburg
Dekabrist-class submarine (D-2)
Sank German merchant Jacobus Fritzen. Decommissioned 1958 but from 1956 to 1987 was based in Kronstadt and served as a training ship. Finally, in 1989 on completion of the reconstruction was installed on shore as a memorial museum in St Petersburg.

The Dekabrist-class were the first class of submarines built for the Soviet Navy after the October Revolution. They were authorized in the Soviet Naval Shipbuilding Program of 1926.

Operational-tactical requirements and design concepts were formulated in 1923. In 1925 a Soviet naval mission had obtained blueprints for the Balilla-class submarine from the Italians: concepts from that design were used together with Soviet ideas.

The class was of a double–hull design with 7 compartments and constructed using riveting. These boats were of Soviet design and had numerous technical shortcomings and construction defects. The most serious problems were their slow diving time and poor stability during diving.
