Ferrara Italy | UNESCO | City sights

Ferrara is a city in the Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy.

Ferrara is recognized by UNESCO as one of the finest examples of city planning and was the first in Italy not to follow the traditional Roman principles. In its forward thinking and establishment of a University, the city managed to attract and host some of the greatest minds of the Renaissance period.

It was the first Italian city that I visited and it was a very memorable experience.

If you are planning to visit Ferrara, in Emilia-Romagna - Italy, here you’ll find the best tips on things to do in the city, with a sightseeing map on the most relevant points of interest to enjoy, so you can easily imagine and organize your trip: WHAT to see, HOW to plan your visit, and WHY to discover Ferrara.

In this video:
- WHAT are the major attractions that you can't go home without having seen, including Castello Estense (Este Castle), Piazza Trento e Trieste and the Centro Storico, Cattedrale di San Giorgio (Cathedral of Saint George), Palazzo dei Diamanti Art Galleries, Via delle Volte and Mura di Ferrara (City Walls)
- Then, I’ll describe to you HOW to follow a daily-tour to better visit the city, with a clear map of Udine and tips for nearby attractions.
Finally, we’ll discover WHY to visit Ferrara, with his rich historic city center.

First of all, suggestions on FOOD and ACCOMMODATIONS:
Where to have a MEAL: “Take Eat Easy”, Via degli Spadari, 1, Ferrara, 0039345254 6017
ACCOMMODATIONS: Piazza Nova Guest House, C.so Porta Mare, 133Ferrara, +39 0532 757614, info@piazzanova.it

WHAT
Ferrara is situated on the great plain of Emilia Romagna (one of the biggest region of Italy), Ferrara stands a few kilometres south of the Po River, and about 50km from the sea.

The best times to visit are in spring and autumn. May, in particular, is a month of celebrations linked to the famous Palio of St George; in March and September there are prestigious exhibitions in the Palazzo Diamanti, a jewel of Ferrara's Renaissance; during the last week of August street musicians from around the world come together for the Ferrara Buskers Festival, filling the late summer evenings with music.

HOW
Most of the popular attractions in Ferrara are located in the the historic center, and at the heart of it there is Piazza Trento e Trieste, with the castle at one end and the cathedral forming one entire side.

To visit Ferrara, follow this route:

1. Castello Estense (Este Castle)
The Este Castle was, once, the home and palace of the powerful Este family.

2. Piazza Trento e Trieste and the Centro Storico

3. Cattedrale di San Giorgio (Cathedral of Saint George)
Its front moves from a Romanesque lower tier, built in the early 1100s, upward to a beautiful early Gothic loggia from the 1500s.

4. Palazzo dei Diamanti Art Galleries
The Palazzo dei Diamanti is hard to miss, with its entire exterior covered in more than 8,500 faceted marble blocks.

5. Via delle Volte
One of the most appealing things about Ferrara is the grace with which it moves between the medieval and Renaissance eras. To feel back in the Middle Ages, go in Via delle Volte.

6. Mura di Ferrara (City Walls)
End your trip visiting the walls that surround the historic center.

For you meal I suggest to go in Take Eat Easy and taste the “Pasticcio ferrarese di maccheroni”, which is pastry filled with ragout and mushrooms.

In our tour I’ll bring you in Via delle Volte, Piazza Trento Trieste where you can admire the Cathedral and the Castle, Piazza del Municipio, Palazzo dei diamanti. Then, I’ll give you some food suggestions, to end back visiting the Walls of Ferrara.

WHY
Ferrara is a splendid city of art, to be enjoyed by walking its streets, its character - this magnificent Renaissance capital - revealed on every corner. Through its glorious past, you can understand the roots of its present. The Este family governed here for three centuries and gave the city the appearance it has today: a uniquely planned city, harmoniously fusing Mediaeval and Renaissance, Europe's first modern city. It is precisely these characteristics that secured its UNESCO World Heritage status. It's a peaceful city to wander on foot or by bike, every step re-living the magical atmospheres of the past.

FERRARA 🏰 (Emilia-Romagna) Italy walking tour in 4k

Hello my friends! Let's walk together by the city of Ferrara!
✔️ Ferrara, Emilia Romagna, Italy virtual city tour in 4k. Ultra HD.

Situated on the banks of the Po, the city of Ferrara was declared a World Heritage in 1995. Elegant and stately, dominated by the Este family since the 13th century, Ferrara became one of the most brilliant and culturally lively cities of the Renaissance, with its own refined artistic school.

In this walking tour I will take you around the most important attractions to visit in Ferrara: the Estense Castle, the Cathedral, Piazza delle Erbe, via delle Volte, among others.

🏨 BEST HOTELS where to stay in Ferrara 👉

What to visit in Ferrara

🏰 The Estense Castle is the symbol of the city, it rises imposingly in the historic center of Ferrara: it is one of the rare examples of a castle with a watered lake still visible today in Italy. Its construction began in 1385 and today it is brick-colored, with four large towers on either side. The visit begins by crossing the drawbridges and, once inside, you can visit the prisons and the large frescoed rooms, used for games and court enjoyment. (Ticket cost 12 €)

⛪ The Cathedral dedicated to San Giorgio is the most important religious site in Ferrara. It is located in Piazza delle Erbe (today Trento and Trieste) in front of the Town Hall and not far from the Estense Castle. The white marble façade with the beautiful porch (portico) immediately strikes the eye.

🚶 Best walking tours of Ferrara 👉

Via delle Volte, before the course of the Po was diverted, this beautiful medieval street had a commercial function. Here were the houses of the traders who traded with the rest of Italy across the river. The vaults, the arched passages still visible today, made it possible to quickly reach the warehouses on the river without having to travel all the way and without being attacked.

Piazza del Municipio, with the imposing Staircase of Honor that led to the first residence of the Este family. Next to the Staircase, the marble windows of the apartment where Lucrezia Borgia lived and Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino and famous leader, died.

4K Walking Tour 🏰 Ferrara, Italia 🏰 Travel Vlog 2021

Feel Free Ferrara

This is a metaphoric story about being free. Being free to live your dreams, freedom of mind, free to do what you love to do. The story is told with impressions and emotions we lived on a journey through the beautiful Province of Ferrara, Italy. These lands stretch from behind the equally named city of Ferrara to the coast covering the delta of the Po river. We started our trip in city of Ferrara, UNESCO world heritage and is the ruling bike city of Italy. Thats why we also moved around on two wheels, like the locals do. Paddling we discovered a beautiful centre that breaths a majestic ambience of it's roots from Renaissance; impressive buildings, castles and cathedrals, wide squares surrounded by arced walkways and a city defense wall that encircles the historic centre. Numerous biking itineraries cross cute villages and nature reserves rich of water and full of life. And then ...the food. This place is said to be the kitchen of Italy, which we agree totally. Simple dishes, fresh ingredients and surprising combinations all served in a large variety of warm atmospheres. In short.. Ferrara, a place to feel free
