Discover CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE: The Second CONGO | 10 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT IT

Recently, we talked about the Democratic Republic of Congo. Today, I’m about to take you to the nation next door to DRC. Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Republic of Congo, also known as Congo-Brazzaville. That’s right, Africa actually has 2 CONGOS. Some of you are probably wondering, what is the difference between Congo Brazzaville and the Democratic Republic of Congo? The answer is actually quite simple. First of all, the name Congo comes from the Bakongo, a people present in both countries. So that's why these two countries have a similar name.

Then, you should know that the difference between the DRC and Congo Brazzaville is that they were colonized by two different nations! We talked about it in our video on the Democratic Republic of Congo, this country found itself colonized by the Belgians, where Congo Brazzaville was colonized by the French. Another difference between the two countries is the currency: in Brazzaville, the currency is the Central African CFA.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the most used currency is the US dollar, then the Congolese franc. Finally, one last difference is noticeable at the language level. If the two countries have French as an official language, all the other local languages and dialects are fundamentally different!

In Congo Brazzaville, the official language is the French language. It is spoken by more than half of the population, which is one of the highest rates on the continent, along with Gabon. Likewise, it is estimated that 90% of those over 15 can express themselves well in writing, showing that the official language is mastered. But it is not at all the only language spoken in the country, the others are mainly Bantu languages. The Bantu correspond to the geographical area stretching from Cameroon to the Comoros, and from Sudan to South Africa. This area is very large, and that's why there are over 400 different Bantu languages! However, in Congo Brazzaville the two most important national languages are Kituba and Lingala. Next come the téké and lari languages. There are still more than forty other languages in the country, but which are not Bantu. They are Pygmy languages. But then why was French chosen as the official language when we have so many national languages? According to Laval University, it would be because of the wars and civil wars that rocked the country. The French language would have become a language of refuge for the various armed factions. For example, people who are unsure of their skills prefer to speak French for safety reasons. It is also a way of keeping one's origin to oneself: with a language characteristic of a region, it is possible to receive derogatory remarks. By speaking French, we do not reveal our ethnicity.

Some of you may not know it, but the Republic of Congo has its other name, Congo Brazzaville, in reference to its capital. And yes, the latter is called Brazzaville and was founded on October 3, 1880. It is located in the south of the country, and has a very special history, which dates back to the time of colonization. At the time, the French had control over the territory, and wanted to create competition in Léopoldville, a town located on the opposite bank, on the DRC side. The aim was to seize power in order to explore and exploit the land along the Congo River. It was basically the small village of Mfoa that grew in importance over time, so much so that it was erected as the municipality of Brazzaville in 1911! Where does the name come from, do you think? It's simple, Brazzaville is taken from the name of a Franco-Italian explorer: Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza. It was in the capital that the Brazzaville conference took place in 1944. The purpose of this conference was to redefine, after World War II, relations between France and the African colonies. For the first time, we were talking about decolonization. This is a major historical element that played out in Brazzaville!

For this fifth fact, let's talk about one of the country's ecological prides. The Congo Basin forest is a tropical rainforest that extends over approximately 65% of the territory! Shared between six African countries, it is the second largest rainforest in the world after the Amazon rainforest. It is therefore the largest rainforest in Africa! In fact, she is one of the few to have an intact and completely sovereign nature.

00:00 In South Kivu in Congo, the city of Shabunda is one of the most isolated in the country. Its access is so difficult that life is more expensive there than in any European city. Thus, the poorest families come to look for food there by bicycle or motorbike. These convicts of the road sometimes transport up to 250 kilos of goods for several days, without worrying about the dangers. Virunga National Park in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Virunga National Park is a national park in the Albertine Rift Valley in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was created in 1925 and is among the first protected areas in Africa. In elevation, it ranges from 680 m in the Semliki River valley to 5,109 m in the Rwenzori Mountains. From north to south it extends about 300 km, largely along the international borders with Uganda and Rwanda in the east. It covers an area of 8,090 km2 and is listed in the List of World Heritage in Danger since 1994.
Virunga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Virunga is the continent’s most biologically diverse protected area and a national park embarking on an ambitious development programme known as the “Virunga Alliance”.
Situated in a region which has been deeply impacted by the effects of war and armed conflict for over 20 years, Virunga is protected by a dedicated team of over 700 Rangers. These local men and women go through intensive training, risking their lives on a daily basis to safeguard the Park’s exceptional wildlife, including the last of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas.
Alongside this essential conservation work, the Park is committed to supporting local communities. Virunga has a vision for responsibly harnessing the Park’s natural resources to create new opportunities for the four million people that live within a day’s walk of its borders.
Focussing on three key areas: hydropower, sustainable agriculture and fisheries, and tourism, Virunga National Park is working to economically transform the region - creating jobs and reducing poverty rates. This innovative, community focussed approach to conservation is working to reduce the pressures currently faced by the Park’s Rangers from armed groups, illegal poaching, and land encroachment.
Two active volcanoes are located in the park, Mount Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira. They significantly shaped the national park's diverse habitats and wildlife. More than 3,000 faunal and floral species were recorded, of which more than 300 are endemic to the Albertine Rift including eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei) and golden monkey (Cercopithecus kandti).

Kinshasa: The Capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Kinshasa: The Capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo

----------------------------------------------------

Kinshasa is the capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a population of over 17 million people. It is a major center of commerce, industry, and culture in the DRC, and is home to an international airport and a network of roads and railways that connect it to other parts of the country.

Kinshasa was founded by King Leopold II of Belgium in the 1880s and was originally called Léopoldville. It was renamed Kinshasa after the Congo gained independence in 1960. The city has a rich history and culture, and is known for its music, art, and dance. However, Kinshasa also faces challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and crime.

Despite its challenges, Kinshasa is a vibrant and dynamic city with a lot to offer its residents and visitors. It is a city of contrasts, where modern skyscrapers stand alongside traditional mud huts, and where people from all walks of life come together to create a unique and exciting culture.

Here are some of the things you can see and do in Kinshasa:

Visit the National Museum of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which houses a collection of artifacts from the country's history and culture.
Take a boat trip on the Congo River, which runs through the city.
Visit the Grand Marché, a bustling market where you can buy everything from fresh produce to traditional handicrafts.
Enjoy a night out in Kinshasa's lively nightlife scene.
Sample the city's delicious cuisine, which includes a variety of African, European, and Asian influences.
Kinshasa is a city that is full of life and energy. It is a city that is constantly changing and evolving, and it is a city that is well worth a visit
