How To Experience IloIlo, Philippines (Full Guide)

With almost 2 years under our belts exploring the islands, the cities, and the cultures of the Philippines, there was the one experience that stayed at the top of our bucket list until this year — and that’s the famous mango festival of Guimaras. And we finally ate our weight in the sweetest mangoes in the world, but with so much more to explore in that beautiful region, we took full advantage of our 4 days and 3 nights around Iloilo to devour every site and every bite we could get our hands on.

GUIMARAS ISLAND DESTINATION

A MUST VISIT DESTINATION - GUIMARAS The Floating Cottage of TINMR

What seems like a small hut from afar in the middle of the deep blue sea surrounded by several islands was a floating cottage where you may stopover for lunch.

This was also a project by the previous DENR Secretary Gina Lopez, who traces her roots in the Province of Guimaras. This Floating Cottage is within the Taklong Island National Marine Reserve.

GIL LOPEZ Composer & Revolutionary

GIL LOPEZ Composer & Revolutionary

Ancestral Home and Mausoleum of Gil Lopez
Gil Lopez Sr. was a sugar baron who lived in Hacienda Cornell II, Cadiz City Philippines. He built his home in the late 1800s. Gil had several distinctions, a revolutionary general, a photographer, an entrepreneur, and a composer. As a leader in the community, he was part of the clan of Jaro.
Defying his family, in the early 1890s, Gil married Albina Hofileña.
Quickly the young man was disinherited. However, the couple remained committed to each other, starting married life in a humble hut in adjoining Negros island.

Composer.
Gil became renowned also as a composer. Perhaps his most famous composition was the “Binangon”, a revolutionary march that is even depicted in his tomb marker. Music filled the Lopez home, which boasted of several pianos. His progeny in fact included a grandson, Gilopez Kabayao, an internationally-renowned violinist who was awarded the Magsaysay Award in 1972 for promoting the arts to rural communities.

Entrepreneur, Plantation Owner & Farmer
Together with family and hired hands, Gil cleared vast tracts of land to create a successful, self-sufficient plantation that covered over 1,500 hectares. According to their descendants, the couple named their estate Faraon, the Spanish word for “Pharaoh”. Indeed, the Egyptian title seemed apt for Gil, with his vision, leadership, and talent.

Mausoleum & Home
The family mausoleum entombs the remains of both Gil and Albina, who passed away in 1946 and 1968 respectively. Behind their graves is a stately arched structure which also enshrines one of Gil's compositions. The residence-turned-museum captures the Filipino-Spanish architectural essence.

(The most remarkable thing is this)
Revolutionary general and Guerrilla
Gil Lopez commanded a contingent of bolomen during the liberation of Negros from the Spaniards in 1898, simply called the Philippines Revolution in 1898. However, this enterprising Negrense became more famous for starting his famous Hacienda Faraon straddling the boundary of Cadiz and Sagay. His home also served as headquarters for revolutionaries in the battle against the Spaniards. Knowing his history, during World War II, the Japanese searched estate for arms and guerillas.
But when the Japanese commander saw a piano and asked the family to play for his men, Gilopez Kabayao, a grandson of Gil Lopez, said the family played Chopin, Beethoven, and Japanese folksongs.

-My video on that revolution-
Cinco De Noviembre: Philippine Spanish Revolution

Japanese Provincial commander Col. Ota and Captain Niki Kichuchi, the head of the Japanese forces in Fabrica, would visit the Lopez house, sparing it from destruction. Though the Japanese officers were friendly toward the family, the Lopez were not fully trusted. Several times family members were sent into a hiding place below the grand piano as the Japanese troops searched the house. The Lopez family was providing food to the Filipino resistance while hosting the Japanese.

Due to the Lopez's musical stature, the Japanese military warmed up and granted the village of Fabrica permission to send food to Filipino and American prisoners of war interred nearby, saving them from starvation.

Preserving Cadiz’s historical tapestry, the house provides an educational journey through its well-preserved structure and artifacts.
Gil Lopez (1870-1946).

Guimaras Island, PHILIPPINES

Guimaras [ɡimaˈɾas] is a fourth class island province of the Philippines located in the Western Visayas region. Among the smallest provinces, its capital is Jordan. The island is located in the Panay Gulf, between the islands of Panay and Negros. To the northwest is the province of Iloilo and to the southeast is Negros Occidental.
The province consists primarily of Guimaras Island, and also includes Inampulugan, Guiwanon (or Guiuanon), Panobolon, Natunga, Nadulao, and many minor surrounding islands.[3] Geologists[who?] have concluded that the island once formed one landmass with Panay.
Guimaras, formerly known as Himal-us, was a sub-province of Iloilo until it was made an independent province on May 22, 1992.

About this weeks episode:
The Paraw regatta is a competition among seafarers on colorful sailboats called Paraws in the straits between Guimaras Island and the city of Iloilo. The present-day paraw accomplished to maintain its original design from the sailboats of the first settlers from Borneo who were in quest of a peaceful home in 1212 A.D. Surviving the centuries, the paraws have become a vital part of the Filipino seafaring life.
