The Lake Issyk also known as Issyk Lake is a lake in Kazakhstan near the Almaty city, which is fed by the Issyk River.
It should not be confused with the Issyk-Kul Lake in neighboring Kyrgyzstan.
The lake is mostly famous for the way it was created in result of an ancient natural landslide damming a valley. Another natural landslide destroyed that dam in 1963, with a subsequent flood damaging the city of Esik, which was re-created with human help.

The legendary Issyk Lake is located in the mountains of the Trans-Ili Alatau, in the Issyk Gorge, about 50 km east of the city of Almaty (Kazakhstan). The name Issyk comes from the Kazakh word Esik - “door, narrow gorge, gorge”.

Issyk Lake day trip
Issyk Lake, also known as Esik Lake, is a picturesque alpine lake located in the Issyk Gorge of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, about 70 km east of Almaty City, Kazakhstan. It is situated at an altitude of 1760 meters above sea level and is surrounded by dense forests, flower fields, and towering mountains. The lake is known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, which change color depending on the weather and the time of day.
Issyk Lake was formed about 10,000 years ago by a massive rock avalanche, which created a natural dam across the Issyk River. In 1963, a mudflow from the upper reaches of the river destroyed the dam and emptied the lake. However, the lake was restored to its former glory in the early 1990s.
Issyk Lake is a popular tourist destination, both for locals and international visitors alike. It is a great place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Kazakhstan. Visitors can swim, fish, boat, hike, camp, and simply enjoy the stunning scenery.

At a distance of 60 km from Almaty, at an altitude of 1,800 m above sea level, in one of the picturesque gorges of the Trans-Ili Alatau, there is a small town called Issyk in honor of Lake Issyk.
According to geologists, it was formed about 8-10 thousand years ago as a result of a huge mountain mound, which created a natural dam about 300 meters high. The initial length was 1850 m, width 500 m, depth 50-79 m. The water was green and blue, there were no fish.
Today, Lake Issyk is one of the tourist attractions of Kazakhstan and has a recreational value.

Issyk lake Kazakhstan is estimated to be formed about 8-10 millennia ago, as a result of a catastrophic earthquake that caused the collapse of the right slope of the gorge. After the collapse, debris blocked the gorge and created a dam about 300 meters tall. A lake formed behind the dam was about 1,850 meters long, 500 meters wide and 50 to 79 meters deep, located at an altitude of 1,756 meters. Issyk lake Kazakhstan became known in Russia and Europe by the middle of the 19th Century, after the formation of the village of Nadezhdinskaya at the mouth of the gorge. One of the first researchers was the geographer Semenov Tien-Shansky, who mentioned the lake in his diaries: we were delighted to see at our feet the Green lake (in Kazakh Jasyl-Kol), which had the purest and most transparent, thick bluish-green color of the TRANS-Baikal beryl.
