It is a treasure trove of 'specials' from the Green Barbet (found only at Ongoye Forest outside Mtunzini), the globally-threatened Spotted Ground-Thrush in Dlinza Forest, Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeons, Crowned Eagles, Green Twinspots, the little known Mangrove Kingfisher (at Umlalazi Nature Reserve) to the magnificent Palmnut Vultures of Mtunzini.

Travelling up Eshowe pass during KZN riots : South Africa.
Trying to travel home during the July riots, we took a chance and decided to run the gauntlet up the KZN north coast, via Eshowe and home. We had no idea if there would be rioters on the way home, whether the road would be blockaded, whether there would be people throwing bricks and petrol bombs - thank God it was quiet, so we didn't hang about, but got going and we made it home safely. It was great to see the local community cleaning up the mess that the rioters had made.

This remarkable waterfall is located on South Africa’s largest river, the Orange River.
They are at a height of 60 metres.
The original Khoi inhabitants called it the Place of Great Noice.

3. Meiringspoort Waterfall
This breathtaking waterfall is situated in De Rust in the Klein Karoo.
This spectacular fall is 60 meters high an ends in a 9 meters deep rock pool.
The pool that it falls into is safe for all kinds of water activities. It has crystal clear waters and is a great attraction to picnickers, swimmers and divers.
It is also called as the Great Waterfall.
4. Horseshoe Falls
These falls are set on the Sabie River and create exquisite scene.
Even though these falls are not very high water gushes from 2 sides falling out front in the shape of a horseshoe and have been declared a national monument.
A short walk through a beautiful landscape will bring you to this cascade-type falls.
5. Tugela Falls
Situated in Natal Province this is the highest waterfall in Africa, and the second highest in the world.
It has a total drop of 947 meters.
The Tugela waterfall is a colony of the prettiest waterfalls all put together. The falls are a complex of seasonal waterfalls and best viewed just after the rains.

Aerial Boardwalk Dlinza Forest
The Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk in Eshowe is a 150 meter long walkway built above the Dlinza Forest floor, which allows visitors to view flora, fauna and avifauna at treetop level. It includes a 20 meter high tower, offering dramatic views of both the forest canopy and surrounding countryside.
The Dlinza Forest is a 250 hectare indigenous coastal scarp forest, and is one of The Great Five Natural Forests in KwaZulu Natal. (The other forests are the Ongoye, Entumeni, Nkandla and Qudeni Forests, and lie on a 100 km line running northwest from the coast.) These five forests are the most important forests in Southern Africa from the aspect of unique biodiversity.

This time we went on a sunny winter's day and we saw a few animals, some too small to too far away to record with my phone. I was pretty excited to see a snake and the little duiker! Next time we must go in summer to see if we see more animals!

The Minister of Tourism visits King Cetshwayo Municipality on her Domestic Travel Campaign!
Last week we joined the Minister of Tourism- Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, on part of her domestic travel campaign around South Africa. Along with EDTEA, we visited King Cetshwayo District Municipalty & the Eshowe area in KwaZulu-Natal in order to promote tourism in the area, whilst the Minister promoted clamping down on Covid-19 safety protocols over the festive season.
We were hosted by Aloe Lifestyle Hotel, and visited tourist sites such as Dlinza Forest, Fort Nongqayi Museum, King Cetshwayo’s Memorial site and not to mention a visit to uMlalazi Municipality where we were taken on a guided tour through the Siyaya Coastal Park which is now classified as a protected site. The Eshowe area is no doubt steeped in rich history, being an area which hosted some of the greatest Zulu Kings!
We also visited Ngodini Bunduz, an adventure paradise, where activities such as camping, 4x4 trails, paintball and quad biking is all available.
It was great to see how establishments and tourist attractions are abiding by the rules and regulations set out in order to keep everyone safe, and this campaign was evidence that tourism can still be promoted whilst adhering to safety rules.
