Discover the Historic City of Edirne: The Former Capital of the Ottoman Empire
Edirne is the 2nd capital city of the Ottoman Empire before they moved into Istanbul after the Conquest of Constantinople in 1453 during the reign of Sultan Mehmet Fatih II.
The city borders Bulgaria and Greece and a great way to enjoy the city is to walk across both the Tunca Bridge as well as the Meric Bridge, whilst viewing the river, which flows between Turkey, Bulgaria, and Greece.
In addition, the heart of the city consists of some outstanding mosques. The Eski Cami (Old Mosque) as well as Mimar Sinan's masterpiece Selimiye Cami are a must-see when in Edirne.
You must take a look at the Arasta Bazaar, which is similarly designed to the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. Both these bazaars served a similar function in that the business helped keep the Aya Sophia in Istanbul and Selimiye Cami in Edirne to receive continuous funding.
Moreover, make sure to check out the Health Museum in Edirne as you'll get to see and admire the cutting-edge science of past times treating patients free of charge during the Ottoman era.
The most famous food in Edirne is Tava Ciger and I didn't have it during my short trip there, but do check it out if you are in the city!

Edirne has always been an important city. Edirne's history goes back to the Roman Empire. Later, the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires also lived in these lands. Selimiye Mosque, which is the greatest architect that history has ever seen, called Mimar Sinan's masterpiece, is here.
Selimiye Mosque
Selimiye Mosque, known as the crown of the city and accepted as the peak of the only domed structures in the world, is a masterpiece of Mimar Sinan. Selimiye Mosque fascinates you from afar, but when you enter it, you are almost shocked and lost in the dome of eternity.
Indeed, its height from the ground is 43.28 m. which is 31.30 m. It is surprising how the diameter dome stands. The dome of Selimiye Mosque is larger than the dome of Hagia Sophia. Edirne Selimiye Mosque Complex, one of the most important works of Turkey, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list on 29 June 2011.
The myth that Sinan the Architect solved an equation with 13 unknowns to fit the dome of Selimiye Mosque to that width by creating a fifth operation different from the 4 known main operations of mathematics is just one of the stories about Selimiye.
Selimiye Mosque was built between 1569 and 1575. Selimiye Mosque is one of the most magical places you will forget the time.
We are deeply impressed to see a magnificent work like Selimiye Mosque, where women and men pray in peace, children roll and play, where everyone is respectful, and which is quiet and calm.
The mosque windows are five-tiered; because the pillars of Islam are five.
The fact that the sermons are four shows that there are four sects in Islam.
The 32 gates in Selimiye Complex show that there are thirty-two fards of Islam.
The fact that there are six paths in two minarets indicates the six conditions of faith.
Three balconies were placed on each of the 4 minarets of the mosque, and each of the three balconies was accessed in three separate ways. Of course, such a work fascinated foreigners as well, and everyone who saw it was watching it with envy. In addition, it is a product of great genius that those who climb to the balconies of the minarets do not see each other on the road. The Germans used the same system in the giant sphere in front of their assembly.
There is a tulip motif under one of the marbles of the Selimiye Mosque. According to rumors, there was a tulip garden on the land where the mosque will be built at that time, and the owner of the garden did not want a mosque to be built on his land, and then he sold his land by asking Mimar Sinan to have a tulip motif in the mosque.
Mimar Sinan also made one of these tulip motifs upside down. It is rumored that the tulip motif of the plot is a tulip garden, and the reverse of the motif represents the wrongdoing of the landowner.
Old Mosque – Edirne Grand Mosque
It is the first of the Sultan Mosques built in Edirne. The mosque, which was started to be built by Süleyman Çelebi, the son of Beyazıt I, was completed in 1414 during the time of his brother Mehmet Çelebi.
The large-scale calligraphy of the Old Mosque is quite remarkable. The black Rükne-ü Yemani Stone, located in the window next to the pulpit in the Old Mosque, was brought from the Kaaba and is considered sacred.
Three Honorable Mosque
Edirne Üç Şerefeli Mosque was built between 1437 and 1447 by Sultan II. It was built by Architect Muslihiddin by Murat. It is one of the first works in the transition from Seljuk Architecture to Ottoman Architecture.
Üç Şerefeli Mosque is a very interesting structure with its 4 different minarets. The minaret with 3 balconies, which gives the mosque its name, has 3 different ways out. This practice was tried for the first time in this mosque and it was the first minaret built at a height of 81 meters.
