The #Castle in the Loch - #Lochindorb
The Castle in the Loch.
Lochindorb, a 2-mile long freshwater Loch and a significant landmark on the desolate and bleak Dava moor which has few trees and little else in the way of stand-out features, except, of course, Lochindorb castle,
Only reachable by boat, it is located on an island halfway along the loch’s length towards the eastern banks.
As I was filming the castle, I began to wonder about the origin of the island and the castle,
whether it had been built on or around an earlier crannog.
Further research seemed to support this.
A large ancient oak beam of the type used in crannog construction has been found during investigations by divers on the bed of the loch, near to the shore of the island.
Built around 1290, possibly for Sir John Comyn, a decade or so later Edward longshanks, or the hammer of the Scots invaded Scotland, aiming to crush Braveheart William Wallace.
Edward upgraded the defences and from Lochindorb attacked neighbouring castles.
1335 saw the castle under siege by Sir Andrew Murray during the second war of Scottish independence.
2 granite shot balls were found in 1993, which may be from this siege.
In 1372, the infamous Wolf of Badenoch, Alexander Stewart took ownership of the castle and used it as a base to rampage through the north, burning the towns of Forres and Elgin, including the cathedral in the process.
The earl of Moray Archibald Douglas held the castle in 1455, but after his death in 1456 at the battle of Arkinholm, the crown ordered that the castle be dismantled,
and it has been a ruin ever since.
The corners of the castle were defended by four round towers.
In the enclosure, there are the remains of additional buildings, one known as the chapel and the other as the primary hall.
This brilliant watercolour illustration shows how the castle could have looked when still in use.
Lochindorb wouldn’t always have been in such desolate surroundings, there was once a densely wooded hunting estate with hazel, oak, birch, and pine.
Blackened tree stumps across Dava moor tell of a large fire destroying the trees.
Though there is no solid historic explanation, Folklore has it that Queen Mary of strathspey
in a fit of rage ordered the forest be burnt, after her husband had asked how his estate and hunting dogs were, without asking how she herself was, it seems the dogs would have copped it, too.
Hell, hath no fury like a woman scorned

Steve Reed Tourism Road Trip around North West England
A brand new movie produced by UK travel trade specialists Steve Reed Tourism ofHampshire working with North Wales based Eastwood Media from Flintshire is now ready for coach and tour operators and Group Tour Operators around the country.
And it’s Northwest England that has been in sharp focus.
It’s one of eight short films shot at attractions and destinations around England and Wales over the last fourteen months. Each with the idea of helping organisers to put their tours and excursions together. Each film produced by Steve Reed Tourism when completed is distributed to the many coach and tour operators and GTOS on the SRT tour planner databases.
The sites involved in the Northwest film were Samlesbury Hall near Preston in Lancashire complete with well-known tour guide Simon Entwhistle; Ena Mill Retail – famous for its landmark chimney - in Atherton Greater Manchester; Olympus Fish and Chip Restaurant in Bolton run by Bolton icon Dr Tasos Pattichis and the superb twin attractions of Macclesfield Silk Museum and stunning Paradise Mill in Cheshire.
Daish’s Hotel Blackpool [on the North Shore] was the hotel used for the film and demonstrated how well located it was to conduct such a new and interesting tour to the attractions in the film. It’s one of twelve hotels in ten UK destinations around the Country operated by Daish’s Holidays.
‘Each of the sites chosen for the film proved to be extremely complimentary to each other – offering a service or an experience different from the other venues and attractions,’ says Steve Reed.
‘They make for a real live tour too – providing a first class service to groups whether it’s shopping bargains; excellent and friendly accommodation; delicious fish and chips; a historic Tudor building and tour guide as well as a fascinating journey back to the days of silk production.

Forgotten History: Visiting St Patrick's Chapel Heysham
An explore of the amazing St Peters church yard, St Patricks chapel and the stone carved graves in Heysham Lancashire.
The Spirit of Heysham, giving a few clues to what can be found nearby.
St Peters church, Heysham. In Lancashire. Predominantly dating from the 14th and 15th century. The site has been in use for much longer it seems.
At the entrance to the church yard stands this stone shaft, the remains of a stone cross, dating to around the 8th or 9th century.
Imagine the effort and skill it would take, to carve a stone coffin with nothing but hand tools.
Inside the church lies a Norse hog back grave covering, which dates to 1000AD, unfortunately the church was locked but this image shows the stone.
The west door of the church, which is blocked up, dates back to Saxon times
Legend has it that St Patrick was shipwrecked off Heysham and built a chapel on the cliff above the church.
Whatever the truth, there are the remains of a chapel bearing Patricks name on the cliff beyond the church dating back some sources say to the 5th century when it was built of timber, subsequently being rebuilt in the 8th century in stone and then again in the 10th century, it is certainly one of the earliest Christian sites in the northwest of England.
Excavations in the area have uncovered burials dating to the 10th and 11th centuries, with one female having been found with a Viking period antler comb. An early Christian grave with links back to pagan grave goods.
These artists impressions from the information board give an idea of how the site may have once looked.
To the west of the chapel are these fascinating rock carved graves, which once featured on a best of Black Sabbath album cover. Wonder what the old inhabitants would have thought of that.
5 of the 6 six have sockets to the head end which are thought to have housed crosses.
What a spot to pay respects to the dead
These graves are the only ones of their kind in the UK and without comparisons they can't really be dated, as the contents and covers have long since gone, so radiocarbon dating is not possible, they are generally thought to be pre Norman conquest.
Some sources suggest they may have been used for disarticulated bones as reliquaries rather than for burials and could have made the chapel a place for pilgrimage.
2 more stone cut graves lie to the south east of the chapel, were these for a parent and child, with one cross or grave marker in the carved socket?
Who were these early Christians who put great effort into carving out these graves?

Exploring the Forgotten Ruins of Rattray, Aberdeenshire
The abandoned ruins of what used to be Coastguard service houses near Rattray head lighthouse. Home to the observers who would have manned the now obsolete look out post. The dunes have built up high so even if the look out post was still needed it wouldn't have much of a view.
I came across this little find whilst I was heading to Rattray head lighthouse, you can see that video on the channel, it was a nice little addition to a little explore around part of Aberdeenshire on the NE250 route.

Discover Scotlands southern coast. Dumfries and Galloway
Discover Southerness in Dumfries and Galloway, South West Scotland.
Southerness Lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouses in Scotland unusually is mostly square, the lighthouse overlooks the Solway Firth, with views to the south of the Lake District. built in 1749 to assist the passage of ships through the Firth towards the Nith Estuary. The route would once have been busy with goods coming from Liverpool and Ireland. Renovated in 1805 by the famous engineer Robert Stevenson it remained in use until 1936 and is now open to visitors during the summer
Not far from Southerness is Powillimount beach which belongs to the Arbigland Estate but is free to visit
head along the beach to the west a little and you come to the impressive Thirlstane Arch a natural feature formed in a ridge of sandstone
the rocks that are visible on the shore were formed during the carboniferous period 340 million years ago when the earth's climate was wet and warm,.the layers built up formed into sandstones, limestones and mudstones, The folds and ridges that have formed amazing patterns and are fascinating. there are a lot of fossils in the area which makes it a great place to bring kids on a hunt. One for the school holidays maybe.
be careful as the tides here sweep in fast

What happened to the Solway Viaduct?
Lets take a look at some Abandoned railway engineering.
You join us on the southern bank of the Solway firth on what was once the western end of Hadrian's wall, and the edge of the roman empire, lets take a look at the remains of something quite remarkable. Lying across the Firth is Scotland and to the north the furnaces of Lanarkshire. On the English side the iron ore mines of Cumberland. So how to join the 2 without the detour through Carlisle 10 miles or so to the east? A viaduct of course, and the birth of the Solway Junction railway.

The Isle of Whithorn. A Wee Guide. So much history!
The Isle of Whithorn, a fishing village built around a naturally sheltered bay on the tip of the Scottish Machars peninsula
The isle of Whithorn is no longer an Island, 1790 brought harbour improvements which included the building of a causeway, that some of the village is now built on.
at the highest point of isle heads sits the lighthouse
The small square lighthouse was by no means the first stucture here as it sits among the remains of a much much older promontary fort.
Ridge and furrow marks are visible by the fort and the ramparts are clear to see protecting the landward side of the fort. There is evidence of the remains of a 6m roundhouse on the site.
No firm date has been put on the this site but it must date back to the bronze or Iron age
First erected in the 1100s St Ninian's Chapel would have been a stop off for medieval pilgrims on the way to St Ninian's Shrine at Whithorn Priory. The remains here date to about 1300.
The chapel is currently being consolidated to protect it for years to come.
The original chapel, built in the 1100s, stood within a stone enclosure wall, part of which remains today.
A house for a priest and a small burial ground were also possibly built within the wall.
St Ninian who founded the first christian church in Britain is said to have first set foot here on the Isle in the 4th century to begin his mission to convert the Picts to christianity after training in Rome
Another place for pilgrimage nearby is St Ninian's cave 3 miles along the coast to the west, this is suggested as an alternative site for his first landing. He died 3 miles away in Whithorn in 432
For centuries after his arrival the isle would see many travellers and pilgrims on their way to Whithorn, it was easier to travel by sea than by land.
Amongst the buildings along the harbour is the Steam Packet Inn, where they serve exceptional food and beer from their own micro brewery. The steam packet company once ran a regular ferry service between the Isle and Liverpool for cargo and passengers. Some smaller craft would also work from here, with some possibly involved in a bit of smuggling.
In the 19th century the village had trade links with Ireland and the Isle of Man, ships were also being built here as well.
Fishing remains an important part of local life.
The Isle of Whithorn Church, dating back to 1834 and standing on part of the causeway. Head inside to see this fantastic display of local history with old photos and local stories

Places to see in ( Hucknall - UK )
Places to see in ( Hucknall - UK )
Hucknall, formerly known as Hucknall Torkard, is a town in Nottinghamshire, England, in the district of Ashfield. The town was historically a centre for framework knitting and then for mining, but is now a focus for other industries as well as providing housing for workers in Nottingham.
The town is notable as the site where Rolls-Royce made the first demonstration of a vertical take-off plane. It is also the final resting place of Lord Byron and his estranged daughter, the mathematician and pioneer computer programmer Ada Lovelace.
Hucknall is 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Nottingham on the west bank of the Leen Valley, on land which rises from the Trent Valley in the south to the hills of the county north of Kirkby-in-Ashfield. The Whyburn or 'Town Brook' flows through the town centre, and Farleys Brook marks its southern boundary.
The town’s highest point is Long Hill, (although Beauvale estate has a higher elevation and is situated at the base of Leivers Hill, commonly mistaken for Misk Hill) at 460 ft (140 m) above sea-level, with views over the city and Trent Valley, which descends to between 22 and 24 metres AOD, flowing just beyond most of the city centre.
The town is surrounded by farmland or parkland. To the north-west lie Misk Hills and Annesley. To the north-east town are the villages of Linby and Papplewick beyond these two is Newstead Abbey and its grounds, once the residence of Lord Byron. To the west lies Eastwood, birthplace of D. H. Lawrence, and the inspiration for many of his novels. To the east of the town is Bestwood Country Park.
The contiguous settlements of Butler's Hill and Westville often appear as distinct entities on maps, but are generally regarded as part of Hucknall, and are part of its historic and present-day Church of England parish, although the town itself has no civil parish council, however the identity is reinforced by being part of the post town and by being shared wards of Hucknall.
Hucknall was once a thriving market town. Its focal point is the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene, next to the town’s market square. The church was built by the Anglo-Saxons and completed after the Norman Conquest, though much of it has been restored during the Victorian era. The medieval church consisted only of a chancel, nave, north aisle and tower but it was considerably enlarged in the Victorian period. In 1872 the south aisle was added and in 1887 the unusually long transepts, while the rest of the building apart from the tower was thoroughly restored.
The town is the northern terminus for the Nottingham Express Transit tram system as well as sharing a station on the Robin Hood Line. There is also a stop at Butler's Hill/Broomhill. The town used to be on the A611 but this has now bypassed the town to the west with a single-carriageway road with roundabouts, with access to junction 27 of the M1, some 3 miles away. The tram line was built from 2002–2004 and currently runs from Hucknall to the Station Street terminus next to Nottingham railway station.

Magical Cuenant Mawr Waterfall Snowdonia, North Wales
A short walk to the beautiful Cuenant Mawr (Great Ravine) waterfall in Llanberis at the foot of Snowdon in Gwynedd, North Wales. Not far from the busy attractions of Llanberis down an unassuming path behind some houses is this hidden gem. It is well worth the short walk from town. The Higher falls are reached by walking up the steep lane and crossing the Mountain rail track. It feels like walking into a lost valley.
