Places to see in ( Hucknall - UK )

Places to see in ( Hucknall - UK )

Hucknall, formerly known as Hucknall Torkard, is a town in Nottinghamshire, England, in the district of Ashfield. The town was historically a centre for framework knitting and then for mining, but is now a focus for other industries as well as providing housing for workers in Nottingham.

The town is notable as the site where Rolls-Royce made the first demonstration of a vertical take-off plane. It is also the final resting place of Lord Byron and his estranged daughter, the mathematician and pioneer computer programmer Ada Lovelace.

Hucknall is 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Nottingham on the west bank of the Leen Valley, on land which rises from the Trent Valley in the south to the hills of the county north of Kirkby-in-Ashfield. The Whyburn or 'Town Brook' flows through the town centre, and Farleys Brook marks its southern boundary.

The town’s highest point is Long Hill, (although Beauvale estate has a higher elevation and is situated at the base of Leivers Hill, commonly mistaken for Misk Hill) at 460 ft (140 m) above sea-level, with views over the city and Trent Valley, which descends to between 22 and 24 metres AOD, flowing just beyond most of the city centre.

The town is surrounded by farmland or parkland. To the north-west lie Misk Hills and Annesley. To the north-east town are the villages of Linby and Papplewick beyond these two is Newstead Abbey and its grounds, once the residence of Lord Byron. To the west lies Eastwood, birthplace of D. H. Lawrence, and the inspiration for many of his novels. To the east of the town is Bestwood Country Park.

The contiguous settlements of Butler's Hill and Westville often appear as distinct entities on maps, but are generally regarded as part of Hucknall, and are part of its historic and present-day Church of England parish, although the town itself has no civil parish council, however the identity is reinforced by being part of the post town and by being shared wards of Hucknall.

Hucknall was once a thriving market town. Its focal point is the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene, next to the town’s market square. The church was built by the Anglo-Saxons and completed after the Norman Conquest, though much of it has been restored during the Victorian era. The medieval church consisted only of a chancel, nave, north aisle and tower but it was considerably enlarged in the Victorian period. In 1872 the south aisle was added and in 1887 the unusually long transepts, while the rest of the building apart from the tower was thoroughly restored.

The town is the northern terminus for the Nottingham Express Transit tram system as well as sharing a station on the Robin Hood Line. There is also a stop at Butler's Hill/Broomhill. The town used to be on the A611 but this has now bypassed the town to the west with a single-carriageway road with roundabouts, with access to junction 27 of the M1, some 3 miles away. The tram line was built from 2002–2004 and currently runs from Hucknall to the Station Street terminus next to Nottingham railway station.

Half an Hour at East Boldon - Light Rail Meets Heavy Rail

Video created by Northumberland Snapper:

Please remember to subscribe if you like our videos.

Filmed on 21st January 2023.

Regular viewers might have noticed that I have been publishing a new video every four days (I really need a better system!) so this is a short bonus today if you like.

Tyne and Wear Metro trains share the Network Rail Durham Coast Line between Pelaw and Sunderland. This short video shows half an hour of Metro and heavy rail services at East Boldon Station. The station is managed by Northern Trains and the operator's trains call infrequently during the day. Tyne and Wear Metro services running between Newcastle and Sunderland are much more frequent, with a train in each direction every 10 minutes or so on weekdays.

The square-shaped 40-year-old Metrocars are energised by the 1.5 kV (DC) overhead lines, which are visible in the video. The current fleet of 87 Metrocars, which always operate in pairs, is due for replacement by the end of 2024. 46 Stadler class 555 METRO electric multiple units, which can run on either 1.5 kV (DC) or 25 kV (AC), have been purchased as a replacement. The first of these METRO units have arrived in the UK and should be undergoing testing on the Tyne and Wear Metro network within the next couple of months. The Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive (Nexus), has future plans to upgrade the overheads to the National Rail standard 25 kV (AC).

We also see a severely delayed Northern Trains class 158 Express Sprinter working the route between Whitby and Newcastle and a couple of LNER class 800 Azuma bi-mode units working off the beaten track owing to engineering work on the East Coast Main Line.

Footage was captured using a Panasonic HC-VX1; fitted with a Rode VideoMic Go;

A Ride on the Tyne & Wear Metro to East Boldon, UK - 22nd August, 2013

It's been a long while since my last video upload, and I have quite a backlog, going to August 2013, which I'm now attempting to get through.

This is a short film shot on the Tyne & Wear Metro, on a 'Green Line' ride to East Boldon. I'm not entirely sure where the footage begins, but it includes the Metro crossing over and then riding on the main rail line.

The video gives a driver's eye view perspective as it travels along the line. It is August and a sunny day, much of the footage features browned crops and agricultural land, before the train arrives at East Boldon. The departure of the Metro train is also featured.

Shadforth Village, County Durham, England. (4K)

Shadforth was a farming village from around AD 600. The village is mentioned in the Boldon Book of 1183. It is perhaps the only village in England with the name 'Shadforth' meaning 'Shallow Ford’. Shadforth is unusual in that it has never had its own pit in an area where mining was a large part of the community.

Weardale Way Walk | County Durham and Tyne and Wear

Walk from Cowshill to Whitburn completed in sections during 2020. The Weardale Way officially ends at the coast in Sunderland, but we decided to replace that bit with a more scenic area through Boldon, Cleadon and Whitburn.

Souter Lighthouse and Whitburn Coastal Park BY DRONE. (4K)

Enjoy a coastal walk around the Souter Lighthouse, Whitburn Coastal Park and Lizard Point on the South Shields coast. The park and lighthouse are located just to the south of South Shields at the village of Marsden. You can park at the Souter Lighthouse car park off the A183 at Marsden Quarry to start your walk. Alternatively follow the traffic free cycle and walking path along National Cycle Route 1 from South Shields to the site. It's a nice trail passing Frenchman's Bay, Marsden Bay and the Leas. The park is also just a few miles north of Sunderland and can be reached by walking or cycling along the same National route.
This route starts at the lighthouse car park and heads to the coastal viewpoint at Lizard Point. You then head west along the coast to Marsden Cliff and the Leas. Here you will find two and a half miles of magnesian limestone cliffs, wave-cut foreshore and coastal grassland. It's a fine cliff top walk with great views along the coast.
After exploring the Leas the route turns round and returns to Whitburn Coastal Park. The park is a nature reserve with trees, a bird observatory, viewing screens and wetland habitats. There's also a new National Trust wildlife garden with ponds, wildflowers, trees, berry bearing shrubs, a bog garden and hibernation areas.
The reserve is great for wildlife watching with cormorants, shags, kittiwakes, fulmar and herring gulls.
At the end of your walk you can enjoy refreshments at the National Trust cafe.
The long distance Great North Forest Heritage Trail runs through Marsden so you can pick this up to extend your walk. It will take you inland towards Cleadon Park and Boldon.
You could also head south along the traffic free cycle path to Whitburn Bay and Sunderland.
