Dumbarton Castle With Music On History Visit To West Dunbartonshire Scotland
Tour Scotland 4K short travel video clip, with Scottish music, of Dumbarton Castle on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit overlooking the River Clyde in West Dunbartonshire, Britain, United Kingdom. This Scottish castle has the longest recorded history of any stronghold in Great Britain. It is located on a plug of volcanic basalt known as Dumbarton Rock. At least as far back as the Iron Age, this has been the site of a strategically important settlement. Its early residents were known to have traded with the Romans. The presence of a settlement is first recorded in a letter Saint Patrick wrote to King Ceretic of Alt Clut in the late 5th century. The name Dumbarton comes from the language of the Gaelic-speaking Scots, and means fortress of the Britons. The Britons themselves, another Celtic race, called the Rock Alclutha, meaning Rock on the Clyde. From the Dark Ages until the 12th century A.D., the Britons had a kingdom called Strathclyde. It stretched from Dumbarton in the north to Morecambe Bay in the south. Dumbarton was its capital. In the 12th century the Kingdom of Strathclyde was integrated into what we recognise now as Scotland, and the Castle soon became one of the Scottish royal fortresses like those at Stirling and Edinburgh. Because of this new status, the Castle played its part in some of the momentous events of Scottish history. In the late 13th and early 14th centuries, the Castle features during the period when Scotland was trying to free itself from the overlordship of King Edward I of England. Edward appointed Sir John Menteith as his Governor at the Castle, and Menteith had William Wallace incarcerated there in 1305 before his transfer to London for trial and execution. Not until the death of Edward did Menteith accept Robert the Bruce as the rightful King of Scotland. He then surrendered the Castle to Bruce. During the period of Mary Queen of Scots in the 16th century, the Castle passed between the factions supporting the English and those allied to the French. Mary herself was taken here as a child for her own safety, and sailed from the Castle to France, where she was betrothed to the French Dauphin. The Earl of Fleming continued to hold the Castle for the Scottish/French alliance, but finally, after a daring assault on the north-eastern flank, Thomas Crawford of Jordanhill and his men successfully took over control. Fleming escaped to France. In the centuries that followed, Dumbarton Castle no longer had the strategic significance of former times. It became dilapidated, and in the 1640s surrendered to Oliver Cromwell without a struggle. In the 19th century, the Castle was used as an army barracks, and later had a close connection with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Queen Victoria made an official visit in 1847, King George VI in 1937, and the young Queen Elizabeth with the Duke of Edinburgh in 1954. The Castle was occupied by the army in both World Wars,

TOP 10 GLASGOW PUBS FOR COP26
Visiting Glasgow for the first time? Coming to the city for COP26? Then this is for you.
Everyone will have their own idea of what constitutes a good pub, and consequently will have their own Top 10. But this is my Top 10, and I think any little bit of insider information has got to be useful for anyone who has never been to Glasgow before.
I have tried to focus on traditional Glasgow pubs, and so have omitted many excellent establishments based in disused churches and the like.
If you can't find a pub that suits you, then Glasgow's a big city and there's sure to be others not far away.
COP26 is all about saving Planet Earth, and I'll drink to that.

Road Trip Drive With Music On History Visit To Dunfermline Fife Scotland
Tour Scotland 4K early Autumn travel video of a road trip drive, with Scottish music, on the road from Rosyth on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit to Dunfermline in West Fife, Britain, United Kingdom. The earliest known settlements in the area around Dunfermline, Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Phàrlain, probably date as far back as the Neolithic period. The area was not regionally significant until at least the Bronze Age. The town was first recorded in the 11th century, with the marriage of King Malcolm III, King of Scots, and Saint Margaret at the church in Dunfermline. Dunfermline's most famous son is the entrepreneur and philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie who was born in the town in 1835. Among the gifts he gave to his home town, include a free library and public swimming baths. Most important of all, was the donation of the Pittencrieff Estate which he had purchased in 1903 to be converted into Pittencrieff Park. In 1888, two Dunfermline men, John Reid and Robert Lockhart, first demonstrated golf in the USA by setting up a hole in an orchard, before Reid set up America's first golf club the same year, St. Andrews Golf Club in Yonkers, New York, with Andrew Carnegie one of the first members. The surname Carnegie was first found in Angus, Gaelic: Aonghas, part of the Tayside region of north eastern Scotland, and present day Council Area of Angus, formerly known as Forfar or Forfarshire, where the was recorded as a family of great antiquity seated at Carnegie in the parish of Carmyllis in that shire. Confirmation of the grant of lands of Cairynegy was made by King David of Scotland in 1358 to then Chief of the Clan John Carnegie. He was descended from Jocelyn of Balinhard who was the progenitor of the family. Carnegie has been written Carnegie, Carnechie, Carnegey, Carnagie, Carnagee and many more. David Carnegie landed in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1749; William Carnegie arrived in Pennsylvania, America, in 1848; John de la Coudamine Carnegie, was a Scottish settler who travelled from Greenock, Glasgow, aboard the ship Philip Laing arriving in Otago, South Island, New Zealand on 15th April 1848. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day. Find things to see and do in Scotland where you are always welcome. Old Photographs Dumbarton West Dunbartonshire Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Dumbarton, Scottish Gaelic Dùn Breatann or Dùn Breatainn, meaning fort of the Britons. It is a town in West Dunbartonshire, on the north bank of the River Clyde where the River Leven flows into the Clyde estuary. Dumbarton was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Alclud, and later the county town of Dunbartonshire. Dumbarton Castle, on top of Dumbarton Rock, dominates the area. Dumbarton was a Royal burgh between 1222 and 1975. Upon their marriage on 19 May 2018, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle became the Earl and Countess of Dumbarton. Dumbarton emerged from the 19th century as a centre for shipbuilding, glassmaking, and whisky production. However these industries have since declined, and Dumbarton today is increasingly a commuter town for Glasgow. David Byrne was born in Dumbarton, to parents Tom, from Lambhill, Glasgow, and Emma. He is the elder of two children. Two years after his birth, his parents moved to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and then to Arbutus, Maryland, in the United States, when he was 8 or 9 years old. His father worked as an electronics engineer. David Byrne was the founding member, principal songwriter, and lead singer and guitarist of the American new wave band Talking Heads, active between 1975 and 1991. The Cutty Sark Clipper Ship, 1869; was completed by the Denny Shipyard in Dumbarton, after the liquidation of her contracted builders, Scott and Linton; preserved in a dry dock at Greenwich, London, England.

Old Photographs Dalmuir Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Dalmuir an area on the western side of Clydebank, in West Dunbartonshire. Before being annexed to the growing shipbuilding town of Clydebank, early Dalmuir was a town in its own right and host to Richard Collins paper mill, which opened in 1747 on the banks of the Duntocher Burn. The William Beardmore and Company shipbuilding and engineering works attracted a large population to settle in the area. It was active from 1886 to the mid 1930s and at its peak employed about 40,000 people. Its most well known area these days is Dalmuir Park. ABOUT GLASGOW
Glasgow is a stylish, cosmopolitan and confident city that offers its visitors a huge amount to see and do. Please put aside any preconceptions you may have about Glasgow, it's really worth visiting. There's lots of free museums, art galleries & parks, so it doesn't have to break the bank.
Glasgow is situated on the River Clyde, in the West of Scotland, and has a population of around 596,550, making it the largest city in Scotland. Glasgow’s position on the west coast and the effects of the Gulf Stream give it a slightly milder climate than other Scottish cities, but please prepare for all weather, especially in Autumn/Winter.
Glasgow was heavily reliant on the industries of ship building and heavy engineering which have now declined. After years of industrial decline, it has reinvented itself to become an exciting European city with enormous potential. Glasgow has a rich cultural heritage and some very impressive Victorian architecture, the Glasgow City Chambers and the University of Glasgow being some notable examples.
Glasgow as a city very much reflects its people. Through booms and busts Glaswegians have always shown enormous resilience and an enterprising spirit to turns things around. Their great sense of humour and kindliness are undoubtedly the qualities that keep this city flourishing. The city’s latest slogan is true: 'people make Glasgow'.
The city was home to Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a famous architect and arts & crafts designer born in 1868, whose distinctive style can still be seen today in architecture all around the city.
The City of Glasgow is now one of the most exciting and culturally vibrant cities in Europe. Glasgow has re-invented itself from post-industrial decline to a city full of some of the best museums, galleries and places to eat in the UK – and the shopping is fantastic! You only need to take a walk around its magnificent streets, lined with beautiful, ornate Victorian buildings, or to enjoy a coffee in one of its stylish West End bars and cafes to feel the confidence and optimism that exudes from this wonderful Scottish city.
There is so much to see and do in Glasgow that it can be difficult to fit it all in. Ideally, take at least a couple of days. Whether you want to visit the Riverside Transport Museum or the Burrell Collection, go shopping along trendy Byres Road, or have dinner in one of the elegant restaurants of the Merchant City – you’ll be amazed at what Glasgow has to offer.
Glasgow is now one of the most visited cities in the UK and offers its lucky residents & visitors a wealth of cultural heritage, visitor attractions, sporting activities, live music venues, fabulous places to eat and, of course, fabulous shopping along the “style mile”. The city still produces some great buildings today including, amongst others, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, the Glasgow Science Centre, the SSE Hydro arena and the ever popular concert venue The Clyde Auditorium, also affectionately known as “the Armadillo”.
The City is also fantastic for shopping, especially along Argyle Street, Buchanan Street and Sauchiehall Street and in the shopping centres Buchanan Galleries, St Enoch Centre, Princes Square and the Italian Centre - to name but a few. Enjoy your visit to this fabulous city!
If you'd like a private tour of Glasgow with me, please book via my website -
I also offer private history & photography tours of Edinburgh, Dundee and Stirling.
