मऊ शहर लखनऊ के दक्षिण-पूर्व से 282 किलोमीटर और आजमगढ़ के पूर्व से 56 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित है। यह शहर तमसा नदी (टोंस नदी) के किनारे बसा है। तमसा नदी शहर के उत्तर से निकलती है। मऊ एक औद्योगिक शहर है।
मऊ में क्या प्रसिद्ध है?
यहाँ एक गयासुर नाम का तालाब है। इसका महत्व गया पुण्यक्षेत्र में फाल्गु नदी तटपर स्थित विष्णुपद के बराबर माना जाता है। यहाँ पर श्रद्धालु पितृपक्ष में पिण्ड दान करते हैं। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि नहुष के शासन काल में गयासुर नामक राक्षस का बध इसी स्थल पर किया गया था।
कब्जे को लेकर मऊ नट एवं मलिक बंधुओं के बीज भीषण युद्ध हुआ,जिसमें मऊ नट का भंजन(मारा गया) हुआ और इस क्षेत्र को मऊ नट भंजन कहा गया जो कालान्तर में मऊनाथ भंजन हो गया। मऊनाथ भंजन के इस नामकरण को लेकर भी कई विचार है। कुछ विद्वान इसे संस्कृत शब्द ''मयूर'' का अपभ्रंश मानते ह, तो कुछ इसे टर्की भाषा का शब्द मानते हैं।

He points out that traditionally the elite men in his town have always had male courtesans despite having been wedded to female partner. Dumraon is a town, near Buxar city and nagar parishad corresponding community development block in Buxar district in the Indian state of Bihar. Dumraon is one of Bihar's oldest municipalities and one of India's oldest princely states also known as Dumraon Raj. It is located 1.5 km south of National Highway (NH) 84 (Ara-Buxar Highway), 20 kilometres (12 mi)north from NH-30 (Patna-Ara-Mohania) and 80 kilometres (50 mi) from NH-2 (Delhi- Kolkata). It is known for its Sinhora. Sights include Jangali Shiv ka Mandir, Bihariji Ka Mandir, Dumrejani mai ka Mandir, Maa Dakshini bhavani ji ka Mandir and Kaliji Ka Mandir.
Dumraon was the capital of the Dumraon Raj, a powerful zamindari estate ruled by the Ujjainiya Rajputs.[4] The rulers of Dumraon constituted the senior branch of the Ujjainiyas in the region, with the estates at Buxar and Jagdishpur being younger branches.[5] Dumraon was made the capital of the estate in 1745 by Raja Horil Singh[5] (r. 1709-1746),[4] who built a fortress at Dumraon.[4] (Horil Singh's nephews, Buddh Singh and Udwant Singh, founded the estates at Buxar and Jagdishpur.)[5]

Today we will tell you about the top 10 places to visit in Bihar.
Patna, Rajgir, Gaya, Nalanda, Rohtas, Buxar, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, West Champaran
1. PATNA: We go to Patna, the capital of Bihar, in the morning we visit the Hanuman Temple near Patna Junction and then visit the Museum, Golghar and in the evening we can go to Digha Ghat and enjoy the beautiful view of nature.
2. RAJGIR: You will get a train from Patna in the morning for Rajgir. Rajgir is 90 kilometers from Patna. In Rajgir you can find Vishwa Shanti Stupa and Rajgir is surrounded by these 5 hills Vipulgiri, Ratnagiri, Udaygiri, Swarnagiri and Vaibhargiri. Rajgir is very famous among the tourists because of these hills and you can enjoy the tour of Galas Bridge and visit the temple of Lord Buddha and Lord Mahavir Ji.
3. GAYA: Now let's go to Gaya, Gumne Gaya is also near Rajgir, the distance of Gaya from Patna is 100 kilometers. There are many religious places in Gaya where you can visit Vishnupad Temple, Mahabodhi Temple, Mangala Gauri Temple, the statue of Mahatma Buddha, after that you can visit Sujata Stupa.
4. NALANDA: Now we are going to get lost in Nalanda district, so we can visit the world's oldest Nalanda College and also visit Pawapuri Temple, Sun Temple and Nalanda College Library.
5. ROHTAS: Now the distance of Rohtas is 180 kilometers from Patna. There are many famous temples in Rohtas. While visiting Gupta Dham, you can enjoy climbing the hill and also enjoy the waterfall there.
6. BUXAR: Now we can visit Ram ji's first rites place, Buxar, in Buxar you can visit Sthdarsaram Dham and Ramrekha Ghat and at a distance of 30 kilometers from Buxar and 40 kilometers from Arrah, the main temple of Lord Shiva of Sahabad, Baba Barmeshwar Nath Dham which is in Brahmapur.
7. VAISHALI: Now let us move on, the world's first democracy was established there which is famous by the name of Vaishali. Vaishali is about 30 kilometers from Patna. There is Vishwa Shanti Stupa in Vaishali which you can visit, along with the temple of Jain religion, there is the temple of Lord Mahavir Ji. Ashoka Sambhav built by Emperor Ashoka can be roamed around.
8. MUZAFFARPUR: Now we have come to Muzaffarpur, a city famous for litchi in the world. Here you can visit Baba Garibnath Dham along with Devi Temple and Chhinmastika Temple. You can also enjoy the water park in the summer season.
9. GOPALGANJ: Now we go to the famous temple of Mata Rani in Gopalganj. In Gopalganj you can see the temple of Mata Janaki Ji and there are other major temples like Ramjipal Fort, Gopeshwar Temple, Gautam Kund, Baikunthpur Bird Sanctuary, Kalyan Devi Temple, Shri. Durga Temple, Siddhawalia.
10. WEST CHAMPARAN: Now we move to West Champaran which is 200 kilometers from Patna where you can visit Valmiki National Park and you can visit Sikta Devi Temple, Lauriya Nandangarh, Bettiah Fort, Sumeswar Fort.
