Duchcov, Czech Republic from Travel with Iva Jasperson

Duchcov, Czech Republic from Travel with Iva Jasperson

Hi guys.....
The first documented reference to the town is from 1207, referring to the older name Hrabišín. The name of Duchcov is first mentioned in 1240. A brewery was established in 1675.
Until 1918, Dux (bilingual names Dux – Duchov at the end of the 19th century) was part of the Austrian monarchy (Austria side after the compromise of 1867), head of the district with the same name, one of the 94 Bezirkshauptmannschaften in Bohemia.
A post-office was opened in July 1857.
In 1918, Duchcov became a part of independent Czechoslovakia. In 1938, as a result of the Munich Agreement, the town was ceded to Nazi Germany as one of the municipalities in Sudetenland. It was placed until 1945 under the administration of the Regierungsbezirk Aussig of Reichsgau Sudetenland. In May 1945, after the liberation of Czechoslovakia, Duchcov returned under Czechoslovak administration. The Sudeten German population was expelled in 1945 (further to the Beneš decrees) and replaced by Czech settlers.

Praha-Libeň railway station (Czech: Nádraží Praha-Libeň) is a mainline railway station located in Libeň, Prague 9. It is situated on track 11 linking Prague to Český Brod and Kolín, which also forms part of the main railway corridor linking Prague to Brno and Olomouc. Since its reconstruction which took place between 2008 and 2010, as part of the Nové Spojení project, several international services have served this station as well as the more central Praha hlavní nádraží. The station area also contains a large freight yard and is a centre for freight services operated by ČD Cargo as well as passenger transport. The station served 876,000 passengers in 2006.

The line from Olomouc to Prague as it was first opened in 1845 passed through the then village of Libeň, but a station was not built on the line until 1877, between the then named Praha statní nádraží (today's Masarykovo nádraží) and Běchovice stations. In 1923 the station was renamed Libeň horní nádraží (Libeň high-level station) to distinguish it from the low-level station (dolní nádraží) which led to the now demolished terminus at Těšnov. In 1926 a cut-and-cover line was built under Vítkov hill linking Libeň station to Praha hlavní nádraží.

In the late 1970s the station was modernised and shortly afterwards a new link was built to Praha-Holešovice railway station, intended to serve the international services the two central stations could no longer handle.

The station is situated within walking distance of the O2 Arena, and was thus instrumental in the infrastructure for the 2004 IIHF World Championship. Libeň station is not connected to the Prague Metro, but is connected to the city's public transport system by buses and trams.

Attempts to make it more efficient are currently ongoing and a recent plan to move passenger transport to an independent subsidiary was approved by the Czech government in January 2008.

ČD operates trains; fixed infrastructure (such as tracks) is managed by SŽDC. In December 2010, the Czech government proposed bringing SŽDC and ČD together in a single holding company. The government has also changed the subsidies available to ČD and SŽDC.

ČD Cargo, the cargo subsidiary, mainly transports raw materials, intermediate goods and containers. As of 2009, it is ranked in the top five largest railway cargo operators in Europe.

Baroque majesty of Duchcov (Short 2/3) - Barokní nádhera Duchcova - J. S. Bach Bourrée

The Baroque castle of Duchcov is located in the North of the Czech Republic in the Ústí nad Labem District almost 100 km northwest of Prague.

The castle is a stunning example of Baroque architecture with beautifully designed gardens and an impressive interior featuring period furniture, art, and intricate details such as stuccoed ceilings. Furthermore is closely associated with Giacomo Casanova who spent the last years of his life at the castle working as a librarian and and pursuing his literary interests.

Music: J. S. Bach BWV 996 (part), own recording

After the fall of the iron curtain and consequent upheavals in railway operations they remain in use with a number of railways. Still in the 1980s ČSD locomotives were renumbered to the class 141. After dividing Czechoslovakia in 1993 all locos of this class have remained in Czech republic.

The locomotive was produced in the years 1957-1960 in three types. 20E1, the prototype, different from serial production, 30E1 and 30E2. 61 engines were built in those series.

The prototype (E499.101) came into service on February 29, 1959. Most of locomotives stationed in Prague, but some of them were sent to Ústí nad Labem and Česká Třebová. Currently the whole series is being systematically withdrawn with last units used in Prague, Olomouc and Ústí nad Labem.
