Volga River in Dubna
The Volga River is the longest river in Europe. It belongs to the closed basin of the Caspian Sea. Rising in the Valdai Hills 225 meters (738 ft) above sea level northwest of Moscow and about 320 kilometers (200 mi) southeast of Saint Petersburg, the Volga heads east past Lake Sterzh, Tver, Dubna, Rybinsk, Yaroslavl, Nizhny Novgorod, and Kazan. From there it turns south, flows past Ulyanovsk, Tolyatti, Samara, Saratov and Volgograd, and discharges into the Caspian Sea below Astrakhan at 28 meters (92 ft) below sea level. At its most strategic point, it bends toward the Don (the big bend). Volgograd, formerly Stalingrad, is located there.
The Volga has many tributaries, most importantly the Kama, the Oka, the Vetluga, and the Sura rivers. The Volga and its tributaries form the Volga river system, which flows through an area of about 1,350,000 square kilometres (521,238 square miles) in the most heavily populated part of Russia. The Volga Delta has a length of about 160 kilometres (99 miles) and includes as many as 500 channels and smaller rivers. The largest estuary in Europe, it is the only place in Russia where pelicans, flamingos, and lotuses may be found. The Volga freezes for most of its length for three months each year.
The Volga drains most of Western Russia. Its many large reservoirs provide irrigation and hydroelectric power. The Moscow Canal, the Volga--Don Canal, and the Volga--Baltic Waterway form navigable waterways connecting Moscow to the White Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Caspian Sea, the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. High levels of chemical pollution have adversely affected the river and its habitats.
The fertile river valley provides large quantities of wheat, and also has many mineral riches. A substantial petroleum industry centers on the Volga valley. Other resources include natural gas, salt, and potash. The Volga Delta and the nearby Caspian Sea offer superb fishing grounds. Astrakhan, at the delta, is the center of the caviar industry.

The Red Forest. The most dangerous and radioactive places in the world. Chernobyl Exclusion Zone
The name Red Forest comes from the reddish-brown colour of the pines after they died as a result of absorption of high levels of ionising radiation as a result of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster on 26 April 1986.
The pine forest absorbed huge doses of radioactive dust through its treetops. For all living organisms living there, the radiation was deadly. The radiation literally scorched out life, turning century-old pine trees into desiccated red skeletons.

This time, a Virtual Travel Films crew travelled to the most contaminated and dangerous radioactive area of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The place is called the Red Forest.

▶ ︎ In February 2022, during the Russian aggression against Ukraine, Russian troops were moving through the Red Forest. Long military convoys raised clouds of radioactive dust.
Nuclear plant workers reported that the Russian occupiers did not use protective suits and put their health at risk.
On 31 March 2022, most of the Russian troops occupying Chernobyl were forced to retreat because of radiation sickness among soldiers and officers. Russian troops dug trenches in the heavily contaminated Red Forest.
On April 1, 2022, The Daily Telegraph reported the death of one Russian soldier from acute radiation sickness after a long stay in a camp in the Red Forest. In October 2022, CNN reported that Russian soldiers stationed at Chernobyl were treated in Belarus. Many of the soldiers showed signs of radiation exposure.

On the russian river cruise ship Rodnaya Rus we’ll sail through the Moscow Canal from the quays of the North River Terminal to the town of Dubna in timelapse mode and see the entire canal.
We’ll pass through Khimki, Klyazminsky, Pyalovsky, Pestovsky, Ikshinsky, and Ivankovsky reservoirs. Then we’ll go down a total of 38 meters from the level of Khimki reservoir to the level of the Volga River (Ivankovskoye reservoir) in five canal locks. But that's not all! Finally, we’ll descend 11 meters in Lock No. 1 of the Moscow Canal in Dubna.
During the long daylight hours of our cruise, we’ll see almost the entire canal, all of its banks, bridges, berths, and barrage gates.

Christmas in Russia is normally celebrated on January 7th (only a few Catholics might celebrate it on the 25th December). The date is different because the Russian Orthodox Church uses the old 'Julian' calendar for religious celebration days.
Orthodox Christians consider Christmas the second most important holiday (after Easter), and it includes fasting from November 28 to January 6. On the night from January 6 to 7 believers should visit the “nightlong vigil” and pray all night long. If they cannot attend the vigil themselves, they watch it on television: some state channels broadcast the liturgy from Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
