Sardinia TOP 10 Places to Visit: Costa Smeralda, Cagliari, Villasimius, Alghero, Stintino, and more
If you are planning to visit Sardinia, in Italy, here you’ll find the best tips on things to do on the island, with a sightseeing map of the most relevant points of interest to enjoy, so you can easily imagine and organize your trip: WHAT to see, HOW to plan your visit, and WHY to discover Sardinia region.
In this video:
- WHAT are the major attractions that you can't go home without having seen, including Cagliari, Alghero, Emerald Coast (Costa Smeralda), Pelosa beach, the village of Bosa, Villasimius, Costa Rei, Limbara mountain, Gallura, Tavolara island, Capo Ferrato, Stintino village.
- Then, I’ll describe to you HOW to follow a tour to better visit the island, with a clear map of Sardinia and tips to organize your trip and your vacation.
• Finally, we’ll discover WHY to visit Sardinia, with its rich traditions and wonderful nature!
So, what are the most relevant points of interest in this fascinating island? Here are my answers:
COSTA REI
Located on the southeast coast of Sardinia, Costa Rei is a small village. This place is much appreciated by international travelers as a destination for holidays in Sardinia.
Across miles of stunning white sand beaches, here you can find high-quality tourism services: some of the best family hotels, luxury villas, resorts, restaurants, and much more.
GALLURA
Among the favorite tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, Gallura lies on a beautiful stretch of land almost lapping Corsica, overlooking the Strait of Bonifacio.
The extreme north of the island is the natural pearl of the promontory of Capo Testa, with its beaches surrounded by the greenery of strawberry trees and a rich Mediterranean vegetation.
COSTA SMERALDA
In particular, the Costa Smeralda is a coastal stretch that is part of Gallura and which extends for about 55 kilometers.
Moving south there is the imposing island of Tavolara, in front of which there are other beautiful beaches such as Lu Impostu and Brandinchi.
ALGHERO
Alghero is a city loved for its walkway along the port’s bastions, the red roofs that touch the sky and the historical center: a labyrinth of narrow streets that connect piazzas bustling with life.
VILLASIMIUS
Villasimius is popular for its renowned resorts, hotels and long white sand beaches with crystal clear waters, diving sites, coves, and a landscape covered in the Mediterranean scrub.
LIMBARA
Visit Monte Limbara, a rocky granitic massif not very high (1,359 meters), recommended to those who want to hike and enjoy nature without a deep trekking experience.
CAGLIARI
Most tourists begin their visit in the island capital of Cagliari, stopping at least to climb from Piazza della Costituzione to Bastione San Remy.
Cagliari can be an excellent base for visiting the southern coast of the island, which has some of the best beaches in Sardinia.
STINTINO (LA PELOSA BEACH)
The main tourist attraction of Stintino is the beach of La Pelosa, made of fine white sand and a turquoise-blue sea. An icon here is the tower, built in 1578 by the Aragonese, called Torre della Pelosa.
BOSA
In the village of Bosa, a tangle of medieval streets winds from the old stone bridge to the hilltop Malaspina Castle.
CAPO FERRATO
The wild promontory of Capo Ferrato is ideal for taking beautiful walks and breathing in nature.
FOOD:
Dishes to taste:
Fregola: is a type of pasta from Sardinia. It is similar to North African Berkoukes, Levantine Moghrabieh, and Israeli couscous.
Seada is a Sardinian dessert prepared by deep-frying a large semolina dumpling with a filling of soured Pecorino cheese and lemon peel in olive oil.
Culurgiones: Sardinian stuffed pockets made from semolina flour, white flour, eggs, water and salt giving a soft crust to the ravioli.

Cala Gonone italy|secret city of sardinia /street walking tour
Cala Gonone is an Italian seaside town and a civil parish of the municipality of Dorgali, Province of Nuoro, in the region of Sardinia. The area around Cala Gonone was inhabited in the Nuragic Era. The remains of a Nuragic settlement can be seen at Nuraghe Mannu on the outskirts of the village, just off the road to Dorgali. The modern village was founded by a colony of fishermen from the island of Ponza at the beginning of the 20th century. The town however remained largely isolated from the rest of Sardinia until the tunnel through the hills from Dorgali was opened in 1860.

Watch this full video where we show how to get to this beautiful town by car in Sardinia:
The road to the town is one of the wildest drives of the country. It’s said to be one of the most beautiful beaches of the Province of Nuoro, in Sardinia. It's Cala Gonone’s very inaccessibility that forms a good part of its appeal. The road is simply brutal, with several dizzying hairpin bends.
Starting from the Strada Statale 125, the drive is 9.6 km long offering grandstand views of the Golfo di Orosei. It’s one of Sardinia's most symbolic beaches, because of its wild appearance and unspoilt beauty.
The surface of the road is paved with concrete sections. The most challenging part of the road are the last 2.4 km. Starting from the Nuraghe Buca d’Irghiriai, an archaeological site at an elevation of 322m above the sea level, the road is very steep. The elevation gain is 245 meters and the average gradient is 10.20%, with some sections up to 14%.
