Once upon a time, in the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the charming town of Donji Vakuf was born. Surrounded by rolling hills and lush green forests, Donji Vakuf was a town full of quaint cobbled streets and colorful houses. The city was known for its warm and hospitable inhabitants, who lived in harmony with nature and each other. Surrounded by lush green mountains and calm rivers, Donji Vakuf was known for its picturesque landscapes and hospitable community. The history of the city goes back centuries, and the remains of ancient civilizations date back to the Roman era.

WIKIPEDIA:

Travnik Castle, locally known as Stari Grad Castle (old town castle), is a medieval town-fortress complex in the town of Travnik, Central Bosnia Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Dating back to pre-Ottoman Bosnia[3] when the former Christian Kingdom ruled the region, there is no historical data as to the construction date of the Medieval fortress. However, the construction type and other characteristics indicate that it was built sometime in the second half of the 14th century or in the first half of the 15th century.[4] As a result, It was probably built during the time of the Bosnian Kings Tvrtko II or Ostoja, and then rebuilt and expanded during the time of Stephen Thomas. The Travnik fortress was erected before the arrival of the Ottoman Turks for the purpose of defence as the Ottomans penetrated deeper into Bosnia. Travnik itself was one of a number of fortified towns in the region built for this purpose but was built too late to stem the Ottoman advance.

The Pliva Waterfall (Serbian Cyrillic: Пливски водопад) is located by the town of Jajce, in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the river Pliva meets the river Vrbas. The waterfall is a large tufa, also known as travertine barrier, making over 22 meters cascade on the Pliva river, in a narrow karstic zone, which follows the Pliva course, retracted into a flysh and limestone contact zone. It was 30 meters high, but after an earthquake during the Bosnian war and attacks on the power plant further up the river, the area was flooded and now the waterfall is 22 meters high.
The old Jajce walled city core, including the waterfall, and other individual sites outside the walled city perimeter, such as the Jajce Mithraeum, is designated as The natural and architectural ensemble of Jajce and proposed for inscription into the UNESCO's World Heritage Site list. The bid for inscription is currently placed on the UNESCO Tentative list.

Jajce (Serbian Cyrillic: Јајце) Jajce is a small city in Bosnia & Herzegovina, central not only geographically but also culturally. Throughout Bosnia’s long history, Jajce has been the home of medieval kings, Ottoman governors, and a range of different ethnic groups, as well as being one of President Tito’s earliest Communist strongholds. Jajce has been so far undiscovered by tourists, although UNESCO has recently been investing in renovating the city’s historical areas,Town and municipality located in the Central Bosnia Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to the 2013 census, the town has a population of 7,172 inhabitants, with 27,258 inhabitants in the municipality, It is situated in the region of Bosanska Krajina, on the crossroads between Banja Luka, Mrkonjić Grad and Donji Vakuf, on the confluence of the rivers Pliva and Vrbas.

The Jajce Watermills | Visiting the unique spot in beautiful Bosnia!

*Please note this video was filmed in 2019, before the Corona Virus epidemic.*
While in the beautiful town of Jajce, Bosnia and Herzegovina, we took a short walk to one of the interesting, and lesser visited spots that we had been recommended. Jajce itself is a lovely town, but we wanted to get a little outside of the town, and visit somewhere a little more out of the way. Along the walk, we took in some stunning scenery, as well as taking the opportunity to stop off and a few locations. However, once we arrived, the Watermills really became a highlight of our short visit. These old mills, that were built to help mill wheat, are a stunning and unique example of using nature in a sustainable way. It proved to be well worth the walk from Jajce!

The Mlinčiči Water Mills near Jajce in Bosnia and Herzegovina #anenglishmaninthebalkans

The Mlinčiči Water Mills near Jajce.

We Walk Through the Mlinčiči near Jajce in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Walking Through the Mlinčiči near Jajce.

Jajce is a town in central Bosnia and Herzegovina in the federal canton of Central Bosnia. It is located at the crossroads between Banja Luka and Mrkonjić Grad and Donji Vakuf, where the rivers Pliva and Vrbas meet. Only a few kilometres from the town are the Great and Little Pliva Lakes, where the medieval mills (the locals call them Mlinčići) are very interesting as a special historical landmark. Nineteen wooden shrines on the water covered with shingles, built for the purpose of grinding grain, are built of old oak wood and are without an attic, windows and chimney. Historians estimate that there were originally 33 of them, and their construction dates back to the Middle Ages. The first written mention of mills dates back to 1562, but old records show that at that time, during the Ottoman Empire, as many as 24 were built on waterfalls, and 6 of them were not in operation. In the 17th century, according to some records, there were as many as 26 operating mills on Lake Pliva, to which the surrounding inhabitants brought their grain for grinding.

The setting of the mills is very interesting, which is in incredible harmony with the natural terrain and has been a unique view of Lake Pliva from the very beginning. It would be interesting to watch old men and women centuries ago carrying sacks of grain to the mills and bowing with dignity at their entrances. The mills were owned by wealthier landowners who rented and used the mills to the surrounding population. The usage tax was paid by the users in the produced goods and amounted to 10% of the total flour produced. Each family had at their disposal a specific day of the week when they could use the mills, and the said schedule was strictly adhered to. The open door indicated that millers were present in the mill, and the closed one indicated that the mill was not currently operating. This also meant that the closed mill was not accessible, which indicates the high morals and culture of the then inhabitants of the area.

The mill consisted of several parts (drive wheel, drive axle, trough, millstone, granary (), and the millers regulated the water to them with special locks on the lake. The water was led through the trough to the drive wheel, which drove the drive shaft for the millstone. With a special lever for raising the millstone, they regulated and, if desired, adjusted the quality of grinding or. fineness of flour. Over time, the mills lost their importance due to industrial development and fast life, which almost led to their downfall. The invaluable historical and ethnological value of the most interesting mills is in fact a mirror of the Bosnian tradition and the foundation for the preservation of the former way of life in this area, so in 2005 they began their restoration. In 2009, the mills on Lake Pliva were declared a cultural monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina of special importance and are one of the key elements in the development of tourism in the wider area of the town of Jajce.

The signs to their location were less well marked at the time of our visit, but the hustle and bustle of the lakes led us to them. The Great and Small Pliva Lakes offer a lot of sports and recreational opportunities for the surrounding residents. On the shores of the lakes and around the mentioned mills, there were a lot of people who enjoyed fishing, picnicking and playing in the park and canoeing. We also noticed a lot of cyclists, hikers and a few swimmers, and we hardly found a parking space. Despite the hustle and bustle, visiting the mills was a special experience. If the path accidentally takes you to the mentioned places or passes them, We highly recommend them.

Bosnia & Herzegovina: Across Sarajevo, Konjic & Mostar

This is a bit of an unusual destination, but we recently travelled to the Balkans to Bosnia & Herzegovina. This was after a wild transit detour taking up an entire day from Kuala Lumpur to Doha to Istanbul before finally making it to Sarajevo due to flight departure delays in KLIA.

Bosnia's a beautiful and scenic but once war-torn country, having seen both the beginning of World War I as well as, more recently, the Bosnian War in the early 90's which broke up former Yugoslavia. As a result, many buildings particularly along the north bank of the Miljacka River running through Sarajevo remain scarred with bullet holes from small arms fire, while numerous areas are marked for still active landmines far outside the cities.

If you're interested in travelling to Europe without the weight of the Euro bearing down on our wallets, this is a fantastic destination that's rich in history and culture - with plenty of heart. With about half its population being Muslim, halal food will be an easy find for Muslim travellers.
