The Comoros - East Africa's Island Paradise
I spent ten days exploring the Comoros islands in East Africa (next to Madagascar), splitting my time between Grande Comore and Mohéli. On Grande Comore I visited Moroni, the beaches of the north, Lac Salé, and Chindini.
On Moheli I stayed at Laka Lodge in Nioumachoua, where I swam, snorkled with humpback whales and turtles, and enjoyed Moheli's perfect beaches. A true paradise!

Comoros is a group of 4 islands off the African coast, on the eastern side, situated between the historic Mozambique and Madagascar, in the Indian Ocean. Although the country is sparsely populated, it is also one of the lesser known countries of Africa.
#Mount Karthala
What can be more intriguing than visiting the site of an active volcano, and one of the largest (7,746 ft) at that! It lies at the southern part of Ngazidja Island. Mt. Karthala, at Moroni the capital city of Comoros, houses the active volcano and hiking upto it to see the same, can be an enriching experience. The mountain here is also popular for some exquisite bird-watching.
#Mahore/Mayotte
This island is also called the island of the French, as its influence can be well noticed in the architecture. The unique selling point of this island are the white sandy clear beaches and scuba diving. Scuba diving can be a viable option at Mayotte, since all scuba divers can experience an array of aquatic wildlife underwater and bright coral reefs which make the diving experience memorable.
#Anjouan
Also known as Nzwani is said to be the most alluring of all the islands of Comoros. Anjouan is partly responsible for branding Comoros as the ‘Island of Perfumes’. The air is thick with the aroma of cloves and ‘ylang ylang’ flower. These are used to make essential oils, making Comoros one of the largest exporters of vanilla and spice. The place is truly enigmatic and intriguing.
#Dziancoudre Waterfall
This waterfall is located in Mutsamudu, Anjouna, is a place where serenity can be experienced. It is here too, that the aroma of ylang ylang and cloves can be smelled heavily.
#Shirazi Mosque in Domoni
One might easily surpass this place as of those, but this mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Comoros built by the Shirazis from Persia. The place is all about ancient architecture and historical importance.

French is the language of administration and education, and Arabic is the language of religion. Comorian (also known as Shikomor) - a Bantu language closely related to Swahili - is the language of the people. It is spoken by nearly 97% of the population. Comorian is confined almost exclusively for oral use - in the few cases where it is written, it is written either in the Arabic script or the Latin script. Although the Latin script is more widely promoted, literacy in the Arabic script is higher.
Most Comorians speak Comorian as a first language and French as a second. Some can also speak Arabic.
Grande Comore
Trek to the Karthala volcano crater (6-8 hours walk up on a well-maintained path); possible as a day-tour or as a overnight tour of 2-3 days. There is a permanent camp below the crater with tents. It is also possible to visit the sulfur springs further along (additional 2-3 hours of walking). Guides available. A 2-day trek with accommodation, food, water, guide costs EUR 100 per person.
Lac Sale - salt-water lake adjacent to the beach beyond Mytsamiouli in Grand Comore in what seems to be an old crater near the sea. Impressive sight from the rock between the lake and the sea, making it possible to get a good 360 degree view of the scenery. The location is very close to the national road.
Dolphins off the coast beyond Hahaya
Beaches near Mitsamiouli (Galawa, Planet and Maloudja). Basic beachfront shacks available on Maloudja beach for EUR 30 per night.
Mohéli
Livingstone Bats up in the trees after a 1-1.5 hour hike.
Giant Sea Turtles laying eggs every day at Itsamia. Basic accommodation by a community project is available at EUR 25 per room.
Saint Antoine ridge hike is a medium to slightly difficult hike (depending on the season) up on a mountain ridge to an old house of a colonial French person. A large part of the hike is just going up, but parts of the hike are on the ridge which is supported left and right by trees (so you are basically walking on roots, like someone said).
Dive in the Marine National Park with Laka Lodge.
Anjouan
Rent a 4x4 car with a driver and drive around the island, taking in a small waterfall, old towns and views of mountains and beaches.

Chomoni Beach in Grande Comore, Comoros
With a paradisal landscape of turquoise sea and perfect white sand, Chomoni Beach offers excellent snorkeling and plenty of relaxation. Swim or bring snorkel gear to explore the warm waters and diverse marine life, then lounge on the beach and gaze at the volcanic rocks scattered across the small bay. Enjoy a meal of fresh lobsters and seafood caught and prepared by the locals, and consider an overnight stay in one of the rustic bungalows next to the water.
Bouni and Chindini on the eastern coast and Chomoni on the southern coast are like a small tropical Eden, with just a few baobabs and wooden bungalows to shelter from the sun. Like Mauritius, the rich sealife in the waters of these beaches are perfect for diving, however, the only diving centre that exists is on Grande Comore, in the only luxury seaside hotel on the archipelago. This centre also organizes deep sea fishing expeditions and excursions around the island on a boat.

Comoros Travel Video
Comoros Travel Video - Haphazardly scattered across the Indian Ocean, the mysterious, outrageous and enchanting Comoros islands are the kind of place you go to just drop off the planet for a while. Far removed from the clutter that comes with conventional paradises -- sprawling hotels, neon discos -- the Comoros are so remote even an international fugitive could hide out here. In particular, the island of Mohéli, boasting the sleepy town of Fomboni. Anjouan is the beautiful sister among the already good looking cluster of islands, it does paradise so well, it actually lives up to all the clichéd expectations any traveller could possibly muster -- Palms, bananas and the scent of ylang-ylang and cloves borne on the breeze.
Rich in Swahili culture, and devoutly Muslim, the charming inhabitants of Comoros come from a legendary stock of Arab traders, Persian sultans, African slaves and Portuguese pirates. The four developed islands offer everything from relaxing on white-sand beaches by turquoise seas to hiking through rainforests on the lookout for giant bats. Grande Comore, the largest of the islands, boasts the largest active volcano in the world, Mt Karthala, which last blew its lid in 2005, flattening villages. The aftermath, though has created a spectacular desert landscape on the mountain, and walking and trekking here is particularly good. Also on Grande Comore, timeless Moroni is oozing with old-time Arabian flair. Mayotte, is the only island of the four still a part of France, and while some love the whitest of white beaches, others find it a little too French.
Nicknamed Cloud Coup-Coup land because of their crazy politics, the three independent islands (the fourth, Mayotte, is still a part of France) have experienced almost 20 coups since gaining independence in 1975! In fact, a Comorian president is lucky if theres time for his official portrait to be taken before armed men are once again knocking on the door. In the last decade, however, the quarrelsome tiff-prone independent islands agreed to put their differences aside and fly under the joint banner of the Union des Comores.
Holidaying in the Comoros isnt for everyone; travel will kick your arse at times. But it teaches lessons in patience, humility and resilience. Everything moves mora mora (slowly slowly) and Travelism facilities are far from plush. Islam, and all its traditions, is evident everywhere. Women are expected to show modesty and cover up, and alcohol is a no-no for both sexes.
But if your idea of the perfect holiday is less about drinking rum punch in a skimpy bikini at a swank resort, and more about long, lazy days sipping tea and talking politics with the locals, then a safari in the exotic Comoros will probably be the kind of unpredictable, swashbuckling adventure youve been craving.

About Comoros: The Comoros is a volcanic archipelago off Africas east coast, in the warm Indian Ocean waters of the Mozambique Channel. The nation states largest island, Grande Comore (Ngazidja) is ringed by beaches and old lava from active Mt. Karthala volcano. Around the port and medina in the capital, Moroni, are carved doors and a white colonnaded mosque, the Ancienne Mosquée du Vendredi, recalling the islands Arab heritage. // The Comoros, officially the Union of the Comoros, is an independent country made up of three islands in southeastern Africa, located at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean. Its capital and largest city is Moroni. The religion of the majority of the population, and the official state religion, is Sunni Islam. As a member of the Arab League, it is the only country in the Arab world which is entirely in the Southern Hemisphere. Comoros proclaimed their independence on July 6, 1975. It is also a member state of the African Union, the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the Indian Ocean Commission. The country has three official languages: Chi Comori, French and Arabic. // Moroni (Arabic: موروني, romanized: Mūrūnī) is the largest city, federal capital, and seat of the government of the Union of the Comoros, a sovereign archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean. Moroni means at the river (mroni in Shingazidja). Moroni is the capital of the semi-autonomous island of Ngazidja, the largest of the three main islands of the republic. The citys estimated population in 2003 was 41,557 residents. The majority of journalists around the world have chosen to develop their subject on controversial and sensational themes: violence, war, crime. But all these facts represent only 1% of our world and its inhabitants, forgetting the remaining 99% of which we never speak.
I chose to visit every country on the planet and film them to present them in High Definition format but in a raw way, without music, without comment. Simply, reality in all its truth. Thus, you will be able to make your own idea of the world in which you live.
Currently, I have already visited nearly 184 countries and my world tour continues thanks to you who follow me.
