In the famous Asterix & Obelix comics, Brittany is the restive last corner of Gaul that refuses to submit to the Romans - and a little of this can be felt in reality, too: the black-and-white Breton flag flies everywhere and the region's own Breton culture and language are proudly cultivated.
In short: In Brittany, the clocks go a little differently than in the rest of France. Take advantage of a vacation in Brittany to get to know this fascinating province!
The weather in Brittany is extremely changeable. Even in summer, always pack a sweater or jacket and take an umbrella. If a planned hike along the coast threatens to fall through, wait a day: then the sun can shine again.
Don't miss the Breton cuisine. The staple food of the region is the galette, a buckwheat pancake, which tastes more tart than the widespread crêpes and is topped with different ingredients. The classic is the galette complête with ham, cheese and fried egg. The best accompaniment is cider in a cup. #bestplaces #brittany

Brittany-Highlights: The old medieval town Dinan ║ Travel Tips France Part7

May 17th - Day 6 of 17: Around noon we arrived in Dinan, coming from Le Mont Saint Michel.
After checking in (B&B La Maison Pavie in the center of the old town) we strolled through the streets of the medieval city. The houses are rustic yet charming, being built with stone, timber and painted with hearty, lovely colors, dating as far back as the 13th century.
We climbed up the bell tower to get gorgeous views of the surroundings.
The magnificent St. Saviour Basilica has been built in Romanesque style and is one of Dinan's top attractions.
Another interesting place is the Dinan Castle (Château de Dinan), built from 1382.

The Best Things To Do In The Historic City Of St. Malo, France

Saint-Malo is known as the Ville Corsaire or Privateer City and it has a fascinating history that still shapes the city today. This coastal city was an important port for traders and privateers and there are lots of secret passageways and legends surrounding these centuries.

During World War II the city was bombarded and sustained major damage. If you are going to St. Malo, make sure to read the book All The Light We Cannot See, which takes place here. It is also a Netflix miniseries.

Saint-Malo is most popular in the summer as a weekend beach destination. Beachgoers have lots of sand to enjoy at low tide, although the water is always pretty chilly.

Be sure to walk around the ramparts of this walled city. You can also visit the Museum of Jacques Cartier, an aquarium, and the house of a privateer, the Demeure de Corsaire.

If you visit Brittany (la Bretagne) when you're in France, make sure to stop at St. Malo!

Places to see in ( Dinan - France ) Château de Dinan

Places to see in ( Dinan - France ) Château de Dinan

The Château de Dinan consists of a keep, in the town of Dinan, in the Côtes-d'Armor département of the Brittany region of France. The keep and the gate are part of the 2,600 metres (8,500 ft) of medieval ramparts which still surround the old town. It is called Donjon de la duchesse Anne (Keep of the Duchess Anne), and stands 111 feet (34m) high near the Saint Louis gate.

John V, Duke of Brittany built the keep in 1382-1383. The keep is formed by a union of two tall circular towers; a moat and drawbridge divides the keep from the outside of the ramparts as well as from the inside of the city, providing a stronghold both against outsiders and from the townspeople themselves. Extensive machicolations overhang the wall head providing defensive coverage of the base of the tower.

The castle was listed for protection as a monument historique in 1886. It is owned by the commune and houses the local museum.
The castle, adjoining the city but independent of it, could both provide defence and compel submission in case of revolt: it was a substantial political symbol. The castle, attached to the city ramparts, was enlarged in 1595–1598 by the Duc de Mercoeur through the annexation of the fortified 13th-century Porte du Guichet and the artillery Tour de Coëtquen (built 1474), both of which were part of the city walls; this ensemble forms the existing castle. The building was altered between 1693 and 1711 by the military engineer Garanjeau (in particular, the roof was suppressed and replaced by a terrace) and then by the Monuments Historiques and the city of Dinan, which are now responsible for its preservation.

The main part of John of Montfort’s castle, built by Etienne le Tur and in use by 1384, comprises a massive donjon, 34 m high. Its intricate plan is composed of two great round towers joined by a slightly projecting forebuilding, to which the principal entrance, defended by a drawbridge, opens on the ground floor. The donjon has five storeys, crowned by a parapet walk with machicolation decorated with trefoils and supported on long, elegant corbels; a sixth storey, covered with slate, formerly made up the upper part of the structure.

On the opposite side to the projecting entrance block the donjon dominated a very small courtyard, which was provided with a postern and drawbridge leading to the outside and a well that controlled a complex system of water supply. While the exterior of the Dinan Castle has a fortified appearance, the interior is primarily residential. The floors are linked by a continuous spiral staircase.

( Dinan - France ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Dinan . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Dinan - France

Dinan Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Dinan in France.
Dinan is a small enchanting French town on the banks of the Rance and is one of the most beautiful and well preserved medieval towns in Brittany. Today, cobbled lanes and several half-timbered buildings highlight the town’s colourful history and in 1066 many of Dinan´s inhabitants took part in the Norman Conquest and the Hundred Years´ War also left its traces here. However, despite its battles and sieges the picturesque old town has survived to the present day and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Brittany. The town´s defences were constructed in the 14th century. A circular wall, two and a half kilometres long, protected the inhabitants of Dinan from hostile attack. Due to its well planned defences the town remained untouched and even today it’s like stepping back into the Middle Ages.

𝗦𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗦 𝗦𝗢 𝗕𝗘𝗔𝗨𝗧𝗜𝗙𝗨𝗟: 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗢𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻, 𝗙𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘

Today's Video: Dinan, the medieval village that has it all. I call it the trifecta. Think of Saint-Malo and its neighbor Dinard as the two points of the bottom triangle. And the 🔝 ? Dinan.

With its remarkable history and gorgeous intramuros, perched right on the ocean, Saint-Malo attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. A train from Paris delivers visitors into the heart of the Brittany coastline. From there, many bounce off to the infamous Mont-Saint-Michel.

A simple foot ferry across the bay takes you Dinard. I am in love with this idyllic town, its movie-set villas, and 1920's cinema vibes. They call it the Cannes of the North, and Dinard hosts an annual film festival. There's even a statue of Alfred Hitchcock, surrounded by seagulls, right on the beach promenade. The blue and white striped cabanas sit merrily on the sand in the summer. Just about two blocks away is the Les Halles, with over 300 vendors on Saturday morning.

But today, we talk about Dinan. While the region has been inhabited since Neolithic times, this medieval village was first established as a Benedictine convent. In 1064, the Normans of Duke William the Bastard besieged the castle on a motte. This assault appears on the Bayeux Tapestry. But why do I claim that Dinan is the medieval village that has it all?

Here are just a few of my top reasons: Proximity to the beach (30 minutes), picture-perfect half-timbered homes, it has remparts, a chateau, gorgeous churches, medieval events, a clock tower with an XV century belfry, an English garden, an annual medieval festival, an international Celtic harp event, art festivals - PLUS, the village sits on a port!

But let me not hold you up any longer! Head on up to my Instagram story to see it all in person. I spent an entire day walking 95% of the village to show it to you. The video is also saved permanently in my Instagram highlights and on my YouTube channel. Enjoy!

Bisous and big hugs from France,
Shannon

Dinan, the Most Beautiful Town in Brittany? – Seas the Day (Ep31)

It's been argued for a long time that Dinan is the most beautiful town in the whole of Brittany. We thought we should go and have a look ourselves and make our own minds up. Beautiful, yes but the most beautiful, we're not sure, but we did have a lovely time.

If you’ve seen our previous videos, you’ll see we tried visit Dinan towards Christmas to have a look at their spectacular Christmas market, but we didn’t get there. We are happy we waited as there is so much to see and lots of history to explore.

Join us on our journey as we check out the ramparts, château, belfry, churches, very steep roads and beautiful cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses. This was a wonderful place to go and there’s something new to see around every corner and down every alleyway.
