Djibouti is in East Africa, bordered by Eritrea to the north, Ethiopia to the west and south, and Somalia to the southeast. The Gulf of Aden lies to the east. The country can be divided into three regions; the coastal plain and volcanic plateaus in the central and southern parts of the country and the mountain ranges in the north.

See
Djibouti has a lot of sights to see throughout the country. Though some areas are barren and poverty stricken, there are still remarkable landscapes and places to visit and see.

Djibouti city. The rising capital and largest city in Djibouti, it acts also as an administrative province. The city hosts a national archives and national library, allowing visitors to learn more about the history of Djibouti. The city also acts as a major transportation hub. Djibouti city shows different aspects of culture, while the majority of the country's population resides around the city. Many who live there are from Somalia, Ethiopia, and Yemen. There are a few mosques throughout the city for worship as there's a predominantly Muslim population.
Lac Assal. 150m below sea level, Lake Assal is the second-lowest point on Earth. You'll need to hire a car or ask someone who lives in Djibouti to drive you there. Expect a rough ride: the roads outside the capital are destroyed by the truck traffic between Djibouti and Ethiopia. The road passes within sight of the Devil's Island, and some impressive views. Expect to be awestruck.
Lac Abbe. Lac Abbe's surreal and outerworldy landscape are the highlight of a trip to Djibouti. It's located in a remote location, near the Ethiopian border, and it's convenient to get a local guide in Dikhil before going off-road for the 80kms until the lake.

Lake Abbe in Dikhil Region, Djibouti

Lake Abbe, also known as Lake Abhe Bad, is a salt lake, lying on the Ethiopia-Djibouti border. It is one of a chain of six connected lakes, which also includes (from north to south) lakes Gargori, Laitali, Gummare, Bario and Afambo. The river Awash flows into the no-drain lake. The Lake Abbe is the center of the Afar Depression. The Lac Abbe is considered one of the most inaccessible areas of the earth. The water itself is known for its flamingos. The scenery is unique.
Lake Abbe is the ultimate destination of the waters of the Awash River. It lies at the Afar Triple Junction, the central meeting place for the three pieces of the Earth's crust, a defining feature of the Afar Depression. Here three pieces of Earth’s crust are each pulling away from that central point, though not all at the same speed.

On the northwest shore rises Mount Dama Ali , a dormant volcano, while along the southwestern and southern shores extend vast salt flats, 10 km in width. Besides the Awash, seasonal affluents of Lake Abbe include two wadis, the Oleldere and Abuna Merekes, which enter the lake from the west and south, crossing the salt flats. Although the present area of the lake's open water is 34,000 hectares, recent droughts and extraction of water from the Awash River for irrigation has caused the water level of the lake to fall. By 1984, the surface area of the lake had decreased to two thirds of what it was in 1940. During this period about 11,500 hectares of saltflats had formed to the southwest of the lake. Lake Abbe is a hypersaline lake; water containing mineral salts flows in but there is no outflow, and pure water evaporates from the surface. It is also known as an amplifier lake, the water level fluctuating dramatically in response to quite small changes in climate.
The Afar people have established a settlement near the lake's shore. Lake Abbe is known for its limestone chimneys, which reach heights of 50 m and from which steam spews forth. These carbonate chimneys are formed by the mixing of lake water and a deeper geothermal fluid. Flamingos can also be found on the waters.

hello my friends. this is a map of Djibouti. Djibouti is in the Horn of Africa, on the Gulf of Aden and the Bab-el-Mandeb, at the southern entrance to the Red Sea. It lies at the northernmost point of the Great Rift Valley. It is in Djibouti that the rift between the African Plate and the Somali Plate meets the Arabian Plate, forming a geologic tripoint. The tectonic interaction at this tripoint has created the lowest elevation of any place in Africa at Lake Assal, and the second-lowest depression on dry land anywhere on earth.

The country's coastline stretches 314 kilometres , with terrain consisting mainly of plateau, plains and highlands. Its borders extend 575 km , 125 km of which are shared with Eritrea, 390 km with Ethiopia, and 60 km with Somaliland. Djibouti is the southernmost country on the Arabian Plate.

Djibouti has eight mountain ranges with peaks of over 1,000 metres. The Mousa Ali range is considered the country's highest mountain range, with the tallest peak on the border with Ethiopia and Eritrea. It has an elevation of 2,028 metres. The Grand Bara desert covers parts of southern Djibouti in the Arta, Ali Sabieh and Dikhil regions. The majority of it sits at a relatively low elevation, below 1,700 feet.

Extreme geographic points include: to the north, Ras Doumera and the point at which the border with Eritrea enters the Red Sea in the Obock Region; to the east, a section of the Red Sea coast north of Ras Bir; to the south, a location on the border with Ethiopia west of the town of As Ela; and to the west, a location on the frontier with Ethiopia immediately east of the Ethiopian town of Afambo.

Most of Djibouti is part of the Ethiopian xeric grasslands and shrublands ecoregion. The exception is an eastern strip along the Red Sea coast, which is part of the Eritrean coastal desert. THATS ALL. PLEASE COMMENT AND SUBSCRIBE FOR THE BEST MAPS.

Lac Abbe, Djibouti - Off the beaten track adventure in East Africa - Best places to visit in Africa.

Ever heard of Djibouti. Well it is a small country in East Africa. With neighbours like Somalia, Eritrea and Yemen it is not well know as a holiday destination ! Actually Djibouti sees very few travellers except for the whale shark season. It is one of the best places to spot these gentle giants. And if you have a day to spend without diving before flying out we highly recommend to stay a bit longer and organise yourself a two day trip to the Ancient Lakes of Lac Abbe. However we do recommend to visit from November till March since then the temperatures are more comfortable. The landscapes are amazing and you might get to meet the local Nomads heading their cattle and Camels. Your only accommodation available is the Lac Abbe camp. So with a bucket shower and sleeping in a local hut its a true experience. But the views are worth it !!

Enjoy our video and also checkout our Lac Abbe video if you really like to go off the beaten track!

Schon mal was von Dschibuti gehört.

Lake Assal in Djibouti

Lake Assal in Djibouti
Lake Assal is a crater lake in central-western Djibouti. It is located at the western end of Gulf of Tadjoura in the Tadjoura Region, touching Dikhil Region, at the top of the Great Rift Valley, some 120 km west of Djibouti city. Lake Assal is a saline lake which lies 155 m below sea level in the Afar Triangle, making it the lowest point on land in Africa and the third-lowest point on Earth after the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. No outflow occurs from the lake, and due to high evaporation, the salinity level of its waters is 10 times that of the sea, making it the most saline in the world after Don Juan Pond. Lake Assal is the world's largest salt reserve, which is exploited under four concessions awarded in 2002 at the southeast end of the lake; the major share of production (nearly 80%) is held by Société d’Exploitation du Lac and Société d’Exploitation du Salt Investment S.A de Djibouti.
The lake, considered a national treasure, is a protected zone under the law No. 45/AN/04/5L of the National Environmental Action Plan, 2000. However, the law does not define the boundary limits of the lake. Since the exploitation of the salt from the lake was uncontrolled, the Plan has emphasized the need for managing the exploitation to avoid negative impact on the lake environment. The Government of Djibouti has initiated a proposal with UNESCO to declare the Lake Assal zone and the Ardoukoba volcano as a World Heritage Site.

Lay back, relax, and let the blue-turquoise waters hug you as you float in the honey lake – Lake Assal of Djibouti! While floating in the Dead Sea has always made the bucket lists as a must to do at least once in one’s lifetime, Djibouti’s Lake Assal beats all its previous records and is today the hottest deal for optimal water buoyancy. Get ready as you delve into all that you need to know about this mesmerizing natural wonder.

map of Djibouti Africa

Djibouti, officially the Republic of Djibouti, is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Somaliland[b] in the south, Ethiopia in the southwest, Eritrea in the north, and the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in the east. Across the Gulf of Aden is Yemen. The country has a total area of 23,200 km2 (8,958 sq mi)

In antiquity, the territory together with Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somaliland was part of the Land of Punt. Nearby Zeila, now in Somaliland, was the seat of the medieval Adal and Ifat Sultanates. In the late 19th century, the colony of French Somaliland was established following treaties signed by the ruling Dir Somali sultans with the French and its railroad to Dire Dawa (and later Addis Ababa) allowed it to quickly supersede Zeila as the port for southern Ethiopia and the Ogaden] It was subsequently renamed to the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas in 1967. A decade later, the Djiboutian people voted for independence. This officially marked the establishment of the Republic of Djibouti, named after its capital city. The new state joined the United Nations the same year, on 20 September 1977. In the early 1990s, tensions over government representation led to armed conflict, which ended in a power-sharing agreement in 2000 between the ruling party and the opposition.

Djibouti is a multi-ethnic nation with a population of over 921,804 inhabitants (the smallest in mainland Africa). French and Arabic are the country's two official languages, Afar and Somali are national languages. About 94% of residents adhere to Islam, which is the official religion and has been predominant in the region for more than a thousand years. The Somalis and Afar make up the two largest ethnic groups, with the former comprising the majority of the population. Both speak the Cushitic branch of the Afroasiatic languages.
Djibouti is strategically located near some of the world's busiest shipping lanes, controlling access to the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. It serves as a key refuelling and transshipment center, and is the principal maritime port for imports from and exports to neighboring Ethiopia. A burgeoning commercial hub, the nation is the site of various foreign military bases. The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) regional body also has its headquarters in Djibouti City. mapa de Yibuti , carte de Djibouti

Lake Abbé is located in the Afar region in Djibouti, the horn of Africa, is an otherworldly and desolate land. The African, Somalian, and Arabian tectonic plates are tearing away from each other and ultimately creating surreal limestone chimneys, some up to 50 metres tall.

Visiting Lake Abbé really is an adventure off the beaten track, the lack of tourists make it a true joy to explore this stunning landscape at sunset and sunrise. [ Travel with Trekkup Dubai ]
