The township comes alive at night, although for safety reasons, few tourists stay long enough to experience it. If you want to see how Sowetans party, join the guided bar crawl offered by local operator MoAfrika Tours. The adventure starts with an afternoon pick-up from your Johannesburg hotel, followed by dinner at one of Soweto’s lively shisa nyamas. Afterwards, you’ll be safely transported through the streets to three of the township’s best nightlife spots: jazz club Palazzo di Stella, legendary nightclub The Rock (known for its rooftop lounge and heaving dance floor), and Kwa-Thabeng shebeen. The price includes transportation, a knowledgeable local guide, and your first drink in every bar. .

Maboneng & Kwa Mai Mai. Things to do In Johannesburg | Places to go when you’re In Johannesburg

Hi explorers! Yesterday was one of those cold, chilly days here in Johannesburg but I had to go and explore Maboneng. It was lovely to walk on Fox Street, home to the pioneer development Arts on Main and an electric selection of bars, Cafes and restaurants. This is one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world (according to Forbes magazine). Maboneng is colourful and beautiful!

Just down the road, they is an old market called Kwa Mai Mai. This is one of the place where you can find South African local food at a reasonable price and the vibe was amazing .

DIEPSLOOT TOWNSHIP | LIVING IN SOUTH AFRICA | MY EXPERIENCE LIVING IN SOUTH AFRICA

What does the word township and location means ?

In South Africa, the terms township and location usually refer to the often undeveloped racially segregated urban areas, that from 19th century until the end of the apartheid, were reserved for non- whites, namely Indians, Africans and Coloureds.

The term township also has a distinct legal meaning in South Africa system of land title, which carries no racial connotations.

Townships for non whites were also called Locations or Lokasies in Afrikaans, and are often still referred to by that name in smaller towns. The slang term “Kasie “ a popular short version of Lokasie is also used. Townships sometimes have informal settlements near by . #explorewithrachel

Africa - A drive through one of South Africas most dangerous neighborhoods. Diepsloot Johannesburg

I met up with my friend Pilate, who showed me around the south african township of Diepsloot. One of South Africas most dangerous neighborhoods. The township of Diepsloot is just north of Johannesburg and a very interesting place to visit and not nearly as bad as it´s reputation. You can see people going about their daily business. and dogs playing and fighting in the street. Pilate showed me his home and it was a very humbling experience.
Diepsloot is a densely populated settlement in the north of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is made up of government-subsidised housing, brick houses built by landowners as well as shacks. These shacks are built on any piece of land with nothing already on it. Some landowners charge rent to others to stay in a shack on their land.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT APARTHEID

The Apartheid was the social and political policy of racial segregation and discrimination enforced by white minority governments in South Africa from 1948 to 1994.

THE MUSEUM -

OPENING HOURS - Mon - Sun (9h00 to 17h00)

APARTHEID MEANING - means separateness in the Afrikaans language.

HISTORY:

By 1950, the government had banned marriages between whites and people of other races, and prohibited sexual relations between black and white South Africans. The Population Registration Act of 1950 provided the basic framework for apartheid by classifying all South Africans by race, including Bantu (black Africans), Coloured (mixed race) and white. A fourth category, Asian (meaning Indian and Pakistani) was later added. In some cases, the legislation split families; parents could be classified as white, while their children were classified as colored.

South Africa Vlog: Shopping in Johannesburg

December 21, 2012

We spent the afternoon at Sandton City, a huge shopping complex that is adjacent to Nelson Mandela Square. In the Square, you can also find the Sandton Public Library, which is very nice.

If you have a long layover or, like us, are stuck at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you can easily go into the city by taking the Gautrain, a commuter train. Most of the stops are in residential areas, but if you want to do a bit of shopping, see a movie, etc., take the Gautrain from OR Tambo to Sandton City. You'll have to buy a Gold Card, which costs a one-time fee of 11 Rand, then add value to the card. A one-way trip from OR Tambo to Sandton City costs 115 Rand per person, which is pricey but still cheaper than taking a taxi.

If you're staying at the Garden Court Hotel, which provides a free shuttle bus service to and from OR Tambo Airport, take the Gautrain back to Rhodesfield Station, which is one stop before the airport. This will cost you just 27 Rand (compared to 115!)! The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from Rhodesfield Station. We strongly suggest that you take this option during daylight hours. If your shopping trip extends into the night, then we recommend that you pay the extra money to take the Gautrain to the airport then ride the free shuttle bus to the hotel, which is the safest option.

Travel to South Africa:Township tour Cape Town

Come with me as I visit the areas right outside of Cape Town that are home to the majority of black people in and around the city. During the time of Apartheid, the whites took all of the most prized areas forcing the blacks out into the countryside. Because blacks were not paid living wages, they could only build small shacks for their homes.

The men that were given jobs by larger companies were instead forced to live in these all male hostels built by the companies. The hostels were ver small and offered the bare minimum for living essentials. Also women were not allowed to stay at these hostels so the men had to leave their wives and children behind.

Later on the hostels were converted into multi family apartments.

The man speaking during the video is a resident of Langa.

CAPE TOWN'S HIDDEN WORLD

#Cape Town #CapeTown
If you're visiting Cape Town..these places are hidden from the eyes of tourism
BLIKKIESDORP, South Africa can be very dangerous if you don't belong, and also even if you do.
People have been living in these conditions for over 10 years now.
Blikkiesdorp, South Africa felt like a dream. Unsuitable living conditions and gang violence rule. Kids without birth certificates or options. Build your house strong for a storm may bring it down upon you. THANK YOU VOCFM, Voice of the Cape News for allowing me to accompany you into this realm.
