Varna is the largest city in northeastern Bulgaria, located on the shores of the Black Sea and Varna Lake and is the administrative center of the homonymous municipality and district. It is the largest city in Northern Bulgaria and on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, as well as the third largest in the country. According to the GRAO, the current population is 348,712 people, and the permanent address is 369,553 people (as of March 15, 2023).[2] On its territory is located the Admiralty of the Bulgarian Army. Varna is often referred to as the sea capital[3] or summer capital of Bulgaria[4][5] and is an important tourist and educational center, a starting point for the resorts along the Northern Black Sea coast.
A golden treasure from the Chalcolithic Age is stored in the town, which until the excavations of the City of Birds near Pazardzhik is believed to be the oldest gold treasure in the world, which gave the name of the so-called. Culture Varna.[6] After excavations were made in the city of birds near Pazardzhik, it was found that the processed gold found there is 200-300 years older than the objects in the Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis.[7] The International Ballet Competition is held in Varna, held every two years at the Summer Theater of Varna during the summer season.[8][9]

After the 14th century in historical documents the name Odessos disappeared. During the reign of Emperor Tiberius (27-AD), the city was briefly called Tiberiopolis. In his research, archaeologist Pavel Georgiev[11] He points out that there is an inscription from 557, in which, after the death of his wife Theodora, Emperor Justinian dedicated to her a city that he named Theodoriada, located on the northern shore of Varna Lake. During the reign of Empress Irene at the end of the the century, he also briefly bore her name, Irinopolis.
It is assumed that its current name comes from the Old Bulgarian * varna – black, vran.[12] Another theory associates the name with the word lime, meaning waters and mineral spring.[13] The first mention of the name Varna is in the annals of the offensive of the ruler Asparuh and his troops, who ... Konstantin Irechek believes that this name belonged not to the old town of Odessos, but to an area in the vicinity, to the Provadiyska River and Devnya Lake. Konstantin Porfirogen writes that Varna is a river, the same is the opinion of A. Vretos. On the other hand, in 765, Nicephorus reported that the kavkhan of Khan Umar had been killed by his servants in Varna. This murder could not have happened in old Odessos, as it is considered to still be a Byzantine possession. Maybe Varna is some kind of settlement around Devnya Lake. According to the Shkorpil brothers, there was a Thracian settlement named Varna on the shore of the lake, in the area under Dzhanavara, where many archaeological materials are found today. Dimitar Dimitrov believes that Varna was a settlement in the western part of today's town, where there are necropolises from the time of the Chalcolithic. The Shkorpil brothers are looking for the Thracian root named Varnas.[14] At the beginning of the 20th century, Archimandrite Inokentiy in his studies mentioned that the name Varna comes from the Hunno-Avar word varosh, meaning city. La Foresta Pietrificata ..i dintorni di Varna
Pobiti Kamăni a volte chiamata anche la foresta pietrificata (The stone forest ) , è una formazione rocciosa naturale situata nella Regione di Varna in Bulgaria. A 10 chilometri dal sito vi sono i resti di Marcianopoli, la più grande città romana in quella che oggi è la Bulgaria. È costituita da rocce insolite, colonne naturali alte fino a 6 metri, che coprono una superficie di 253 ettari, 70 chilometri quadrati. Le colonne sono cave e riempite di sabbia. In aggiunta alle colonne visibili, ce ne sono altre che sono nascoste nel terreno, disposte in tre piani interrati. Ci sono due teorie relative origine del fenomeno, una che ipotizza una formazione di natura organica e l'altra che ipotizza l'origine minerale. Secondo la prima, le formazioni sono il risultato di attività corallina, mentre il secondo spiega il fenomeno con l'erosione delle rocce, la formazione di sabbia e concrezioni calcaree dell'età dell'Eocene. Per la conservazione, ha ottenuto lo status di ambiente protetto nel 1937

Побити камъни / Pobiti kamani
Разположени са на 18 km западно от Варна, от двете страни на главния път Варна – София, между селата Слънчево, Страшимирово и девненския квартал Повеляново.
Представляват варовикови колони с различна височина – от 5 до 7 m, дебелина – от 0,3 до 3 m и различно сечение. Изглеждат като побити в пясъка и оттам идва името им. Колоните са без твърди основи, кухи и запълнени с пясък. Някои от тях са разположени на етажи с обща височина от 5 m.
Смята се, че са образувани преди около 50 милиона години. Въз основа на изобилното съдържание на вкаменелости, стратиграфският обхват на образуванията е определен в рамките на Долен Еоцен (48,6 – 53 млн. г.).
Местността, в която се намират Побитите камъни, е единствената естествено формирана пустиня в Източна Европа.
Pobiti kamani is located 18 km west of Varna, on both sides of the main road Varna - Sofia, between the villages of Slanchevo, Strashimirovo and Devnya district Povelyanovo.
The area represents limestone columns with different height - from 5 to 7 m, thickness - from 0.3 to 3 m and different cross section. The columns are without solid foundations, hollow and filled with sand. Some of them are located on floors with a total height of 5 m.
They are thought to have formed about 50 million years ago. Based on the abundant content of fossils, the stratigraphic range of the formations is determined within the Early Eocene (48.6 - 53 million years).
The area, where the Pobitite Kamani is located, is the only naturally formed desert in Eastern Europe.
