Top 10 Places Around the Italian Lakes
Top 10 Places Around the Italian Lakes according to DK
10. Sirmione and Southern Lake Garda
Sirmione is a comune in the province of Brescia. It is bounded by the comunes of Desenzano del Garda (Lombardy) and Peschiera del Garda in the province of Verona and the region of Veneto. It has a historical centre which is located on the Sirmio peninsula that divides the lower part of Lake Garda.
9. Lake Idro and the Valvestino
Lake Idro is an Italian prealpine lake of glacial origin situated largely within the Province of Brescia and in part in Trentino. The lake is surrounded by wooded mountains. The shoreline of some 24 km is shared between four communes: Idro (the frazioni Crone and Belprato), from which the lake takes its name, Anfo, Bagolino (fraz. Ponte Caffaro) and Bondone (fraz. Baitoni).
8. Bergamo
Bergamo is a pretty town of some 120,000 people nestling in the foothills of the Alps. Widely acclaimed as a city of rare beauty, Bergamo is famous for its wealth of artistic treasures and enchanting medieval atmosphere. It is a real life tale of two cities: Città Bassa, the busy and modern lower city, and Città Alta, the upper city with its rich heritage of art and history.
7. Centro Lago and its Villages
At the centre of Lake Como -- the Centro Lago -- where the three branches of the lake meet, stands Bellagio, with its pretty village centre of stepped streets
6. Verona
Verona is a cityin north-eastern Italy's Veneto region most famous as the setting for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Though close to the more popular tourist destination of Venice, many people consider Verona a more relaxed and pleasant place to visit. There are many tourists, but the number of tourists per square meter is lower.
5. Milan
Milan is financially the most important city in Italy. In essence, for a tourist, what makes Milan interesting compared to other places is that the city is truly more about the lifestyle of enjoying worldly pleasures: a paradise for shopping, football, opera, and nightlife. Milan remains the marketplace for Italian fashion -- fashion aficionados, supermodels and international paparazzi descend upon the city twice a year for its spring and autumn fairs.
4. Como
Como has always been an area of intense activity, as it has acted over the centuries as a crossing point between Central Europe and the Mediterranean. Built by the Romans at the end of the Piedmont road, it was an important communication point between Rome and its northern territories. In more recent times Como became famed for its silk.
3. Orta San Giulio
Orta San Giulio is a town and comune in the Province of Novara in the Italian region of Piedmont, located about 100 km northeast of Turin and about 40 km northwest of Novara. The town itself is built on a promontory which juts out from the eastern bank of Lake Orta close to Isola San Giulio, an island which also falls within the municipal boundaries.
2. Northern Lake Maggiore
With a length of 68 km and a coastline of over 150 km the glacial Lake Maggiore stretches from the Swiss canton Ticino in the north into the two major Italian regions Piedmont and Lombardy. Since the climate is mild year-round, the area is filled with Mediterranean vegetation and exotic plants. Surrounded by beautiful lake shore towns and villages with lush botanical gardens, amazing islands and a backdrop of Swiss mountain peaks the Lake Maggiore has become a top tourist destination, mainly for central and northern Europe tourists.
1. Isola Bella
Isola Bella (lit. 'beautiful island') is one of the Borromean Islands of Lago Maggiore in north Italy. The island is situated in the Borromean Gulf 400 metres from the lakeside town of Stresa. Isola Bella is 320 metres long by 400 metres wide and is divided between the Palace, its Italianate garden, and a small fishing village.

We're bringing you to three of the beautiful villages along the shores of this lake: visiting Garda town, enjoying a stroll on the lakefront promenade and the little winding lanes of the Old Town; next to Bardolino, famous for its red wine, pedestrian lanes and waterfront promenade; then we'll visit Peschiera Del Garda, with a fortified harbor built by the Venetians 400 years ago.

Garda town is known for its beautiful lakefront promenade, which is lined with cafes, restaurants and shops. Visitors and locals alike can enjoy a stroll along this promenade while taking in the stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. We'll see more of the promenade in a few minutes, but first, we want to dive into these wonderful pedestrian lanes. It's a tangle of shopfronts and restaurants and homes up above. It gets busier in the summertime, but our visit was in October when it was nice and quiet, and peaceful.
And now we're going on to Bardolino and Peschiera Del Garda. You can get from Garda to Bardolino in 5 minutes on the city bus, or you could walk it in 45 minutes. Bardolino's Old Town is a charming maze of narrow streets, picturesque squares and colorful buildings.
Visitors can wander through the streets and explore the local shops, restaurants and cafes. Bardolino is also famous for its namesake wine, which is made from the local Corvina and Rondinella grape varieties. Visitors can explore the town's many wineries and taste the delicious wines produced in the region. We have just walked into town along Borgo Garibaldi, which leads into a series of little twisted lanes and intersections and small piazzas, heading towards the waterfront.
It's quite easy to get around because this is a pedestrian zone and it's small, just about 400 meters long and 400 wide.
Next, we're heading down to Peschiera Del Garda.
During the 15th through 17th centuries, the old town was protected by a series of massive walls that were built by the rulers of Venice who controlled this area at that time. These walls are a World Heritage site as declared by UNESCO, which said they are of exceptional historical, architectural and technological significance. Upon entering town, your first impression will be this beautiful marina with its outdoor cafes. It was part of the Venetian fortified harbor.
Just next to the waterfront, you'll see Piazza San Marco with a beautiful building looking down on it. It's the Palazzina ex Finanza, built in the impressive neoclassical style in the early 20th century. The building was originally used as a barracks for the Italian finance police. Aerial view shows the piazza and the small cluster of little streets that we're about to wander through.
These three islands created a fortified harbor for the Venetian navy. At one time, Lake Garda was connected to the Adriatic Sea by canals that reached the rivers, Adige and Po. But that was severed by the Venetians to cut off trade competition from Mantua. Of course, the history here goes back much further, back to the bronze Age with those lake-dwellers, with their homes up on stilts and wooden piles.

2 Great Places in Desenzano del Garda | Beautiful Garda Lake | Club del Sole & the Historic Center
Garda Lake is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy.
But the lake is so big, how do you know where to go?
My favorite lakside city is Desenzano del Garda.
We saw the Historic Center including the Porto Vecchio (Old Port), and Club del Sole at Glam Village.
What always surprises and impresses me about Garda Lake is how clean and clear the water is. You can stand in the lake, in water up to your shoulders, and still look down and see your feet!
Come with us on a casual stroll around the center of Desenzano. We started from the old theatre, Vicolo Teatro, and just explored the beautiful historic center of Desenzano.

Desenzano del Garda is a beautiful place with a rich history. You can visit the Roman ruins, the medieval castle, or swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Garda. Whether you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy a glass of wine or you want to rent a boat and explore the lake, Desenzano del Garda will not disappoint!

DESENZANO DEL GARDA - LAKE GARDA
DESENZANO DEL GARDA - LAKE GARDA IS THE MAIN TOWN ON LAKE GARDA, THE BIGGEST LAKE IN ITALY. HERE IS A VIDEO GUIDE OF DESENZANO DEL GARDA - LAKE GARDA: WHAT TO DO IN DESENZANO, THE BEACHES, THE OLD TOWN, THE NIGHTLIFE.
THE OLD TOWN OF DESENZANO DEL GARDA REVOLVES AROUND MALVEZZI SQUARE AND THE OLD PORT, LOCATION OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF DESENZANO DEL GARDA, IN FRONT OF WHICH YOU CAN FIND THE STATUE OF SAINT ANGELA MERICI, THE CITY PATRON.
IN FRONT OF LAKE GARDA, ON THE LAKESIDE OF DESENZANO THERE IS THE MONUMENT DEDICATED TO THE GENERAL ACHILLE PAPA, HAILING FROM DESENZANO DEL GARDA, WHO FOUGHT ON THE FRONT LINE DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR ON THE ASIAGO PLATEAU. THE MONUMENT IS BY GIANCARLO MARONI, THE ARCHITECT THAT GABRIELE D'ANNUNZIO WANTED FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF HIS VITTORIALE IN GARDONE RIVIERA, A VERY FAMOUS HISTORICAL DWELLING ON LAKE GARDA ITALY THAT HAS CONTRIBUTED A LOT TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF TOURISM THROUGHOUT LAKE GARDA.
DESENZANO DEL GARDA - SAN MARTINO DELLA BATTAGLIA TOWER AND MUSEUM
THE MONUMENTAL TOWER OF SAN MARTINO DELLA BATTAGLIA, A DISTRICT OF DESENZANO DEL GARDA, IS A HISTORIC BUILDING THAT SOLEMNLY CELEBRATES THE ENTIRE RISORGIMENTO ERA, FROM THE FIRST INDEPENDENCE WAR TO THE CONQUEST OF ROME. THE TOWER WAS BUILT TO COMMEMORATE THOSE WHO FOUGHT FOR THE UNIFICATION OF ITALY, AND IN PARTICULAR TO CELEBRATE THE KING VITTORIO EMANUELE THE SECOND, WHO IS CONSIDERED THE FATHER OF THE NATION. THE TOWER WAS INAUGURATED ON OCTOBER 15TH, 1893, AT THE PRESENCE OF QUEEN MARGHERITA AND KING UMBERTO THE FIRST
THE TOWER OF SAN MARTINO DELLA BATTAGLIA WAS BUILT STARTING FROM 1880 ON THE HIGHEST HILL OF DESENZANO DEL GARDA, WHERE ON JUNE 24TH 1859 THE BLOODIEST PHASE OF THE BATTLE AGAINST THE AUSTRIAN ARMY WAS FOUGHT. INSIDE, MANY FLIGHTS OF STAIRS LEAD TO THE TOP OF THE TOWER; ON THE SIDES OF THE STAIRS THERE ARE ROOMS ENRICHED WITH FINDS, BRONZE BUSTS AND FRESCOES THAT REPRESENT SOME EPISODES OF THE RISORGIMENTO WARS.
THE TOWER OF SAN MARTINO DELLA BATTAGLIA IS 210 FEET HIGH, AND FROM THERE THE VIEW OVER THE ENTIRE SOUTHERN AREA OF LAKE GARDA IS AMAZING! ALL AROUND YOU CAN SEE THE PO VALLEY AND EVEN THE MORAINIC HILLS THAT WERE DUG BY THE GLACIER THAT THEN FORMED LAKE GARDA.
BEHIND THE TOWER THERE IS THE MUSEUM THAT PRESERVES THE RELICS, DOCUMENTS AND MEMORIES OF THE BATTLE OF JUNE 24TH 1859, AS WELL AS SIGNIFICANT RELICS OF OTHER EVENTS OF THE ITALIAN RISORGIMENTO. THE MUSEUM IS DIVIDED INTO THREE ROOMS WHERE SOME SPECIMENS OF THE CANNONS USED IN THE BATTLE ARE EXHIBITED, AS WELL AS WEAPONS, UNIFORMS, TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS AND FINDS THAT TESTIFY TO THE DAILY LIFE OF THE FIGHTERS
