Namibia is... GERMAN?!

Yesterday, I arrived in Namibia (my 143rd country!) to start a 10 day tour with G Adventures! But as I've been wandering around the unique capital city of Windhoek, I couldn't help but notice how GERMAN everything feels. Seriously, the culture is bizarre here in Namibia!

As I investigated further, I discovered that Namibia was a German colony (from 1884 - 1915), and despite 103 years of separation since the Germans left, their influence is still deeply rooted in Namibian society today.

I became so fascinated by this German-Namibian culture, because the vast majority of the world that I've seen has been conquered by either the British, French, Spanish, Portuguese or Dutch... Not the Germans.

Here is a fun video I put together today all about my observations on German-influenced Namibia.

Just out of curiosity -- Is this all news to you? Or did you know that Namibia is German-influenced?

8 Reasons Why Americans LEAVE Costa Rica [Why I Left]

The TRUTH about living in Costa Rica: Why do so many Americans leave Costa Rica after moving there? In this video, I explain what causes expats to change their minds about retiring abroad and why I left Costa Rica after 8 years. Some of the initial reasons that people want to move to Costa Rica include the moderate climate, laid back lifestyle, fresh and healthy food, friendly people, beaches, medical tourism, and the low cost of living. But is Costa Rica really a safe and friendly country or is it actually dangerous and expensive? Once they arrive, many people realize that living in Costa Rica wasn't quite what they expected. Unfortunately, that results in people returning home quite soon after arriving.

After helping more than 500 foreigners move to Costa Rica and living there for eight years, this video explains the top reasons why people move back to the USA and why I left, too, so that you know more about what to expect BEFORE you get there. This is the real and sometimes dark truth about living in Costa Rica. What do you think are the biggest pros and cons of living in Costa Rica? Let us know in the comments.

Behind the Scenes - How Emirates Train Their New Cabin Crew?

I visited the Emirates Aviation Training College in Dubai where Emirates train their cabin crew. The new Emirates cabin crew (ab initio) went through an intensive 8 weeks of training and exams to be qualified to fly.

I was given a behind-the-scenes tour of Emirates new cabin crew training including safety and emergency procedure (SEP) such as sliding, aircraft ditching, smoke and fire in the cabin. Then I observed First Aid Training (GMT) including CPR and newborn baby delivery. After that, I visited the image and uniform to see how the new flight attendants get groomed to Emirates standard. Last, I went inside the mock-up aircraft trainer to observe the new cabin crew service delivery.

Emirates Aviation Training College is the world's largest Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 training facility— including flight simulators, pool for ditching exercises, emergency slides and real firefighting simulators. Mock cabin interiors, specialised training rooms and virtual, game-based training scenarios complete the immersive and realistic training environment.

On average, 120 new cabin crew graduate from the Emirates Aviation Training College each week.

Fixing my seat in Nairobi and hanging out with Anne!

After returning to Kenya, I brought a gift to my friend Josh in Tanzania. So, I had to go downtown again to find a bus company, that could take the parcel there. I also wanted to fix the seat on the Honda, as the cover on both sides was torn. Anne, my local rider friend knew exactly where to do that. She also made sure we visit all her local favourite places and invited me to come stay with her north of Nairobi, and since we both felt we needed to share a lot more adventures, I got my stuff and moved in with her!

UKWELI Kuhusu Maisha Ya VIUMBE Wa Ajabu ANGANI /Wafanana Na Binadamu!

10 Dirtiest Countries: Shocking Realities You Need to See to Believe!

Imagine walking through streets so cluttered with waste that finding a clean spot to step is a challenge. Envision entire landscapes scarred by pollution, where not a single blade of grass can grow. In some parts of the world, this is a daily reality, and basic survival becomes a struggle against environmental degradation. Today, we're taking you on an eye-opening journey through the ten most polluted countries on the planet. Fasten your seatbelts; this is a trip you won't forget.
Number 10: Peru
Peru is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, from the Amazon rainforest to the Andes mountains. However, it faces severe pollution issues due to extensive mining activities. Cities like La Oroya are heavily impacted by toxic emissions from copper, lead, and zinc smelters.
Number 9: Mongolia
Known for its vast grasslands, Mongolia is facing rapid desertification and environmental decline. Overgrazing by livestock, low rainfall, and harsh winters contribute to the loss of fertile land. Unregulated mining of copper and coal leads to soil degradation and water pollution.
Number 8: Kenya
Kenya's natural beauty contrasts sharply with the conditions in areas like the Kibera slum, one of the largest informal settlements in Africa. Over two million residents lack access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and healthcare. Waste disposal is a significant issue, with garbage and human waste accumulating in the streets. .
Number 7: Chad
Despite its wealth in natural resources like oil and gold, Chad faces severe environmental problems. Outdated extraction technologies and illegal mining contribute to significant air and water pollution. Industrial emissions harm agriculture and contaminate water sources, particularly around Lake Chad. Oil spills and poor waste management further degrade the soil, while desertification threatens biodiversity and agricultural productivity.
Number 6: Saudi Arabia
As one of the world's leading oil producers, Saudi Arabia grapples with environmental challenges related to industrial waste and pollution. Regulatory enforcement is often hindered by corruption, and the arid climate exacerbates issues like dust storms that carry harmful substances.
Number 5: Nigeria
Nigeria's diverse landscapes and status as a major oil producer are overshadowed by environmental degradation from frequent oil spills. The Niger Delta has suffered thousands of spills, contaminating soil, water, and air, and significantly impacting local communities' health. Notable disasters have resulted in loss of life and long-term ecological damage. Despite its natural wealth, the country struggles with pollution that lowers life expectancy and hinders sustainable development.
Number 4: Democratic Republic of the Congo
The DRC is rich in minerals like cobalt, essential for global industries, but mining activities have led to widespread environmental pollution. Water sources, soil, and air are contaminated due to inadequate regulations and enforcement. Incidents like the 2021 Kasai River pollution highlight the severe impact on local populations. Wealth generated from resources often fails to benefit the general populace due to corruption and poor infrastructure, leading to unsanitary living conditions.
Number 3: Somalia
Environmental degradation in Somalia has had profound social impacts. Illegal dumping of hazardous waste by foreign entities has contaminated fishing waters, destroying the livelihoods of local fishermen. This ecological disaster contributed to the rise of piracy as affected individuals sought alternative means of survival. Despite international awareness, the locations of much of the dumped waste remain unknown, and ongoing illegal discharges continue to harm the marine environment.
Number 2: India
India faces significant environmental challenges despite its economic growth and rich cultural heritage. Major cities like New Delhi and Mumbai experience some of the highest pollution levels globally. Contaminated rivers and inadequate sanitation facilities affect millions, leading to health crises and frequent outbreaks of diseases like dengue and malaria. The country's infrastructure struggles to manage waste and sewage, especially during heavy rains, resulting in floods and epidemics.
Number 1: Bangladesh
Bangladesh contends with extreme population density and severe pollution. The capital city, Dhaka, is characterized by overcrowded streets filled with garbage and inadequate sanitation facilities. Water sources are heavily polluted due to industrial waste, sewage, and agricultural runoff. The combination of high temperatures and poor environmental conditions creates challenging living situations, contributing to health issues and limiting access to clean resources.

The Unearthly Scenery of Dallol, Danakil Depression, Ethiopia [Amazing Places]

Dallol is the hottest inhabited area on Earth, and also one of the most remote places on Earth. It is located in a depression, at more than 100 meters bellow sea level. Dallol has one of the most unearthly sceneries on the planet, due to its acidic hot springs, sulfur, salt, iron oxide, and other minerals, small gas geysers, and pools of acid.

In this video, I look at four recent travel notices issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Travel notices that were issued include: Ethiopia due to the Chikungunya outbreak, Nigeria as they battle a yellow fever outbreak, polio in the Philippines and the large extensively drug-resistant (XDR) typhoid fever outbreak in Pakistan.
