Discovering Fort Defiance State Park

Welcome to another Country Pilgrim edition as we discover Fort Defiance, State Park.

We walk the trails, explore the woods and park, and learn a little bit about the history. The Iowa State Park website ( shares this background story about the area: Fort Defiance State Park is named for the fort that once stood in the nearby community of Estherville. In the mid-19th century, there was considerable concern among the settlers about the possibility of attacks by hostiles. In March of 1857, forty men, women, and children were massacred near Spirit Lake and Okoboji. In 1862, a wounded 15-year old boy stumbled into town with the story of an Indian massacre in Jackson, Minnesota. This brought terror into the community and Captain W.H. Ingham and Company A of the Northern Border Brigade were dispatched to Estherville to construct Fort Defiance. The townspeople eventually moved into the enclosure but the feared Indian attack never came. Over time, the fort was taken apart and the timbers used to build cabins.

Later in the video - I capture footage of trying to find a walking stick to make my way out of the steep portion of the park - do I make it?

Point Ruston & Point Defiance Parks - Tacoma Scenic Waterfront

Point Ruston is still under development but the scenic waterfront already has lots of attractions, restaurants and activities to offer and with the opening of the walkway bridge, there is a convenient way to visit the park at Point Defiance and see the gardens or the Point Defiance Zoo. It is increasingly becoming a worthy destination for locals or even someone visiting the Seattle area.

Fort Defiance

Fort Defiance was the last fort to be built during the Ohio Indian Wars. Located in Defiance, Ohio, you can visit the site at the confluence of the Auglaize and Maumee Rivers.

Dune Peninsula at Point Defiance Park- Tacoma, WA

Dune Peninsula at Point Defiance in Tacoma, Washington has to be one of the most scenic parks I have visited. The park gets its name from the popular science fiction book series, Dune, written by Tacoma native, Frank Herbert, author of the original 6 books.
Elements from the books are represented in art form, such as sandworms and rusted ruins from a nearly forgotten world. This park has fantastic views of Commencement Bay and Mount Rainier, and has perfect fields with pyramids that could be from Mars. But the park does have a bit of a dark history.
The land that is Dune Peninsula is made up of molten slag from the ASARCO refinery that dumped directly into Commencement Bay. The refinery made Tacoma one of the most polluted cities in America by spreading toxic chemicals over hundreds of miles across the Puget Sound. 20,000 truckloads of contaminated soil were excavated and removed. A geotextile cap was placed on the rest of the contaminated soil, and locally sourced rocks from Sumner were placed around the peninsula's edge to lock it in place.
All that said, I think this is a great addition to the park system in Tacoma and it's 100% worth visiting!

Exploring Point Defiance Park-Tacoma, WA (Gardens, 5 Mile Drive, Fort Nisqually, Never Never Land)

Point Defiance Park in Tacoma, Washington is hands down my favorite place to visit in the whole world. On this day visited several gardens including the Rose, Rhododendron and Japanese garden. I also checked out the Pagoda and several of the viewpoints and finished the video driving through five mile drive and checking out Fort Nisqually Living History Museum and what was left of the abandoned Never Never Land.
