Things to do in Fort William
Undoubtedly Fort William is famed mostly as being the starting off point to climb Britain's highest mountain (1,345 m) Ben Nevis. But there are so other things to do in Fort William as well.
Going up the Ben can be a great day out especially when the weather is fine and the views of the surrounding mountains, sea lochs and glens are clearly in view.
This apart there are some other nice trips to be found in the area. Taking in Neptune's Staircase which is the start of the Caledonian Canal which leads to Loch Ness and Inverness town.
Or perhaps you might like to take a ride up on the mountain gondola to the neighbouring mountain of Aonach Mor. Whether you want to just enjoy the trip and take in the views or partake in some skiing or snow boarding, you’re sure to enjoy it.
A little further south there is the Corran Ferry that takes you across Loch Linnhe to Ardgour. This will allow you to explore a whole new area which you may well have passed many times on your route up north.
Take a trip on the stunning train trip and visit Mallaig which is still a working fishing port with its own little museum which explains the local story very well.
Perhaps even book yourselves and the kids on the Jacobite steam train they will love it as it travels over the Glenfinnan viaduct of Harry Potter fame.
The West Highland Museum could be a great place to visit if you want to learn a little more about the Jacobite's and Bonnie Prince Charlie.
There are other interesting topics to uncover in the museum even discovering how the local life functions around this area will entertain you. If you are in the Fort william area for a few days then this is one that you could tick off if the weather was not so good.

12 Lost Buildings and 10 Best Historic Sites in Edinburgh
I hope that one day you and I can visit this beautiful city.
Edinburgh has undergone massive changes over the years,
some wholly positive, others less so.
Many of the transformations inflicted the city have resulted
in the loss of beautiful buildings,
ranging from the historically valuable
to the architecturally significant.
The post-war era of the 20th century witnessed a marked increase
in the number of Georgian and Victorian structures being demolished,
as the Capital looked boldly towards the future.
However, not all of these modern developments were welcomed
and many were fiercely opposed.
We take a look at 12 examples of lost Edinburgh buildings
that we wish were still standing today.

Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, aged 96, died peacefully at Balmoral Castle, during the afternoon on September 8th, 2022. The Prince of Wales, and second in line to the throne, the Duke of Cambridge, rushed to the Queen’s Scottish Highlands home. Her other children, the Princess Royal, the Duke of York and the Earl of Wessex, were also present, joined by the Duchess of Cornwall, and the Countess of Wessex. The Duke of Sussex also travelled to Scotland. The Queen is now expected to lie in state in a few days’ time, with her funeral held in Westminster Abbey in central London, England in around 10 days.
King Robert II of Scotland, 1316 to 1390, had a hunting lodge in the area. A house at Balmoral was built by Sir William Drummond in 1390. The castle has been the Scottish home of the Royal Family since it was purchased for Queen Victoria by Prince Albert in 1852, having been first leased in 1848. In 1887, Balmoral Castle was the birthplace of Victoria Eugenie, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. She was born to Princess Beatrice, the fifth daughter of Victoria and Albert. Victoria Eugenie would become the queen of Spain. In September 1896, Victoria welcomed Emperor Nicholas II of Russia and Empress Alexandra to Balmoral. Four years later Victoria made her last visit to the estate, three months before her death on 22 January 1901.

The two video images show the Wallace Monument with a Scottish flag, aka The Saltire, and Stirling Castle, at one time a royal residence.
9). Outer Hebrides: Also known as the Western Isles, they comprise 15 inhabited islands and over 50 mainly uninhabited islands. The largest island is Lewis & Harris with a population of over 21,000 and home to the largest town, Stornoway. The video images show the famous Callanish Stones on Lewis and the spectacular Luskentyre Beach on Harris.
8). Inner Hebrides: An archipelago off the west coast of Scotland comprising 44 uninhabited and 35 inhabited islands including: Skye; Mull; lslay; Mull; and Iona. 7). Loch Lomond: The largest loch in Scotland, with many islands, is a popular leisure destination for boating, water sports, and angling. The loch is featured in the song “The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond” made famous by Scottish Celtic rock band Runrig. The video images show the paddle steamer, Maid of the Loch, and a view of Loch Lomond islands from the West Highland Way as it passes over Conic Hill.
6). Glencoe: An iconic Scottish Glen and site of the infamous Glencoe Massacre in 1692. The two images show the Glen looking North West, and Blackrock Cottage with the distinctive Buachaille Etive Mòr (Big Etive Shepherd) as a backdrop. The two video images show a view of the Loch and Urquhart Castle and the River Ness at the City of Inverness. The castle is one of the most visited in Scotland, possibly because of “Nessie”. Inverness is known as the Capital of the Highlands and sits on the large River Ness which flows from Loch Ness into the Beauly Firth.

2). Glasgow: The largest city in Scotland and a historically major centre of shipbuilding and heavy engineering, so much so that Glasgow was referred to as the Second City of the British Empire. Despite the demise of these traditional industries Glasgow still has the largest economy in Scotland. The city is also home to some famous attractions including the couple in the video: Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum; and The Waverley, the only seagoing passenger-carrying paddle steamer in the world.
1). Balmoral Cairns, Balmoral Estate, Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire
I fell in love with this woodland trail in the Balmoral Estate, Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire.
Scattered around the 10km circular trail are cairns, mostly dedicated to the marriages of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's children.
The most impressive cairn though, is Prince Albert's huge pyramid. It was erected by the instruction of Queen Victoria, in memory of her beloved husband Prince Albert who died at 42.
She was broken hearted.
So was I after the walk... such a touching experience.

The grounds of Balmoral Castle, Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK
Balmoral Castle has been one of the residences of the British Royal Family since 1852, when it was purchased by Queen Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert.
It remains the private property of the monarch, and is not part of the state-owned Crown Estate.
The Balmoral Estate has been added to by successive members of the Royal Family, and now covers an area of about 20,000 hectares (49,000 acres).
It is a working estate, including grouse moors, forestry and farmland, as well as managed herds of deer, Highland cattle and ponies.
Balmoral Estate is within the Cairngorms National Park, and is partly within the Deeside and Lochnagar National Scenic Area.
The estate contains a wide variety of landscapes, from the Dee Valley to open mountains.
There are seven Munros (hills in Scotland over 3,000 feet (910 m)) in the estate, the highest being Lochnagar at 1,155 metres (3,789 ft).
The mountain was the setting for a children's story, The Old Man of Lochnagar, told originally by Prince Charles to his younger brothers, Andrew and Edward, and published during 1980.
Most of the Castle is out of bounds to the public and those which are open, forbid any photography. This video just shows the grounds, but it will give you a pretty good idea of the extent to this grand estate.

The River Dee at Braemar, Scottish Highlands, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK
The River Dee (Scottish Gaelic: Uisge Dè) is a river in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
It rises in the Cairngorms and flows through Strathdee (Deeside) to reach the North Sea at Aberdeen.
The name is attested as early as the second century AD in the work of the Alexandrian geographer Claudius Ptolemy, as Δηοῦα (=Deva), meaning 'Goddess', indicating a divine status for the river in the beliefs of the ancient inhabitants of the area.
The several other rivers of the same name in Great Britain have the same origin. The Dee's near neighbour to the north, the river Don also means 'goddess'.
The River Dee rises at approximately 4,000 feet in elevation on the plateau of Braeriach, the highest source of any major river in the British Isles. Water emerges in a number of pools and flows across the plateau to the cliff edge, then plunges into An Garbh Choire.
The young Dee joins a tributary from the Pools of Dee in the Lairig Ghru and passes between Ben Macdui and Cairn Toul. It flows over falls in the Chest of Dee on its way to White Bridge, the confluence of the Geldie Burn.
This is the River Dee from the bridge on Invercauld Road in Braemar.
