Kind Locals Buy us Dinner in Small-Town China 🇨🇳 (Datong, Shanxi)

In Shanxi, China a local couple stopped us in the street to say welcome to Datong, after just a couple minutes of chatting they invited us to come and eat Xinjiang BBQ with them. This kind gesture from, once strangers; now our new friends, Cindy and Steven will stay with us forever and we will always remember Datong because of them.

In Datong, we explored the incredible Yungang Grottoes which I truly believe is China's 2nd wonder of the world. Incredible Buddhist figures carved out of the mountains left us absolutely mind-blown.

Hanging Temple Datong China

The Hanging Temple, also Hengshan Hanging Temple, Hanging Monastery or Xuankong Temple (simplified Chinese: 悬空寺; traditional Chinese: 懸空寺; pinyin: Xuánkōng Sì) is a temple built into a cliff (75 m or 246 ft above the ground) near Mount Heng in Hunyuan County, Datong City, Shanxi Province, China. The closest city is Datong, 64 kilometres to the northwest.

Along with the Yungang Grottoes, the Hanging Temple is one of the main tourist attractions and historical sites in the Datong area. Built more than 1,500 years ago, this temple is notable not only for its location on a sheer precipice but also because it is the only existing temple with the combination of three Chinese traditional philosophies or three religions (三教): Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. The structure is kept in place with oak crossbeams fitted into holes chiseled into the cliffs. The main supportive structure is hidden inside the bedrock. The monastery is located in the small canyon basin, and the body of the building hangs from the middle of the cliff under the prominent summit, protecting the temple from rain erosion and sunlight bake.

Trans-Mongolian Railway | China Datong

For less then 30EUR we made it from Ulaanbaatar to China (Datong). First we took a train and then a bus to cross the border - it was one of experience with zero tourists except us.
First few days it was fun accommodating and getting used to China, certainly it is much more fun when you happen to have ginger hair and beard. We felt like superstars with people stopping us only to say HI and to take a picture with us.
Sharing our Datong experience, hope you like it!

It was China’s DIRTIEST city 10 years ago! DATONG

We went to Datong city, previously the capital of the Northern Wei dynasty 1,600 years ago. Though in the last 30 years it’s been China's coal capital and one of the dirtiest cities in the world, it’s seen a transformation in the last 10 years back to its original roots as a famous cultural destination.

We went to ancient Buddhist sculptures and an incredible Hanging Temple, explored Chinese calligraphy, visited the largest tea storehouse in North China, and, of course, tried local FOOD!

Hanging Temple of Hengshan - Datong, China

The magnificent, gravity defying Hanging Temple is one of the world's forgotten wonders. Clinging to a crag of Hengshan mountain the temple consists of 40 rooms linked by a dizzying maze of narrow passageways.

The temple was constructed by drilling holes into the cliffs side into which oak crossbeams and oak poles hold up the temple. The main supportive structure is hidden inside the bedrock.

The monastery is located in the small canyon basin, and the body of the building hangs from the middle of the cliff under the prominent summit, protecting the temple from rain, erosion and sunlight.

Interestingly the temple is dedicated to not just one religion, but three, with Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism all practiced within the temple and represented in 78 statues and carvings throughout the temple.

The Hanging Temple is also know as the Hanging Monastery or Xuankong, it's located about 60 km southwest of Datong, China in Shanxi province. The temple is said to have been built by a monk named Liao Ran during the late Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534 AD) and restored in 1900.

The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2010, it was listed in 'Time Magazine' as the world's top ten most odd dangerous buildings.

Datong Hanging Monastery in China - Amazing Trip!

Another short video of my time in Beijing. This one follows me to Datong and was filmed on my iPhone so the sound might be a bit poor. The day was incredibly long and the train back (which I couldn't film as the phone ran out of juice) was not a comfortable one - however it was well worth the visit.
