TRAVEL TAIPEI TAIWAN | Old Street Tamsui Town 淡水老街 #10

Tamsui Old Streets has been a must visit for all my foreign friends visiting Taiwan. I assume the bloggers have written about its close proximity to the water and the variety of authentic Taiwanese street foods Tamsui offers. You might not be able to tell how packed this place usually is from my video because it was a horribly rainy Thursday. The majority of the time, however; the streets of Tamsui is crowded with both the locals and the tourists.

Tamsui, New Taipei City, Taiwan - Not Just About Food 淡水不只有美食

Tamsui, the historical sea port of Taipei, is in fact one of the best tourist area in Northern Taiwan, also very accessible. Do not waste your time on main streets for food only! I recommend people take buses (Line R26 or 836) from the MRT station to Hobe Fort, then slowly walk back to MRT station, passing by various spots on the way. On the weekend Line 836 would drive directly to the fort. On weekdays you'll have to walk 200 meters from the riverbank bus stop to the fort. You can buy one single ticket (80 NTD) for Hobo fort, Fort San Domingo and Custom Officer's Residence in any of these places.

Hobo Fort:

Fort San Domingo:

Tamsui Customs Officer's Residence:

The temple appeared in 5:21:

Former warehouse of Lapraik Cass & Co:

Remember to get your map at the MRT station. They also have a tourist information center there. Noted that a few places (for example, Tamsui Itteki Memorial House, some buildings in Aletheia University, and the Lapraik Cass & Co warehouse) might be closed on Sunday and/or Monday.

(No, I didn't go to Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf and Lover's Bridge in this video, because they are too far from all other places. It's a nice place to see sunset, then again there's virtually nothing else around to see. However, you can still take buses or boats to there if you want.)

I claim no rights to the background music.

Video shot by Canon EOS M with EF-M 18-55mm STM and EF-s 55-250mm STM. I used a modified Cinestyle profile on the camera.

Exploring Taiwan: Tamsui Old Street food market (Danshui food market)

Taiwan - the Danshui food market (or Tamsui Old Street food market), a tour in Taipei, Taiwan. Let's travel to Taiwan and let's discover the food markets of Danshui (also known as Tamsui, Damshui, Danshuei, and Tamshui).
Tamsui Old Street is a popular day market located on the riverside promenade in Tamsui (Danshui) in Taiwan. The Tamsui Old Street market has an abundance of famous eateries, souvenir shops and interactive actives. Each year the market attracts thousands of local and international tourists making it one of Taipei’s major tourist hubs.
The Tamsui Old Street market is well-known for its street food – much of which includes fresh locally caught seafood – its cheap souvenir shops and its amazing seaside view. Its location on the riverside in northern Taiwan provides stunning scenery of the ocean that is particularly romantic during sunset from the Tamsui Lovers’ Tower.
Visiting the old street market is a nice addition to the historic town and great way to experience Taiwan’s unique market culture. Each day the market opens around 10:00AM with peak times occurring in the early afternoon.
Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. Neighbouring countries include the People's Republic of China to the northwest, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south.

Day Trip In Tamsui - Fort San Domingo - Little White House - Hobe Fort - Taiwan 2023

Tamsui District is a seaside district in New Taipei, Taiwan. It is named after the Tamsui River; the name means fresh water. The town is popular as a site for viewing the sun setting into the Taiwan Strait. Though modest in size it has a large role in Taiwanese culture.

The Spanish arrived in the area of Tamsui in the 17th century. In the fall of 1629, the Spanish established the first major non-aboriginal settlement comprising the town and mission of Santo Domingo. The Spanish occupied northern Taiwan for the purpose of securing Spanish interests in the Philippines against the Dutch (who were already established in the South of Taiwan by then), the British and the Portuguese, as well as for facilitating trade with China and Japan.

The area has been seen changes since then as well as being controlled by different empires.

Following the completion of the Taipei Metro's Tamsui Line in 1997, the town experienced a sharp increase in tourist traffic, reflected in the completion of several riverside parks, the growth of open air markets specializing in traditional handicrafts and street stall snacks, the construction of a fisherman's wharf, and the increase in passenger ferries traversing across and along the river.

There are many things to see in this wonderful area including the following.

Fort Santo Domingo is a historical fortress in Tamsui District, New Taipei City, Taiwan. It was originally a wooden fort built in 1628 by the Spanish Empire, who named it Fort Santo Domingo. However, the fort was then destroyed by the Spanish themselves, after losing the Second Battle of San Salvador to the Dutch Empire in 1642. After the battle, in 1644, the Dutch rebuilt a fort on the original site and renamed it Fort Antonio.

The Tamsui Customs Officers' Residence. After Taiwan was forced to open foreign trade in early 1860s, foreigners soon came into the island. Qing Dynasty government soon established a customs office in Tamsui in 1870 after the opening of Tamsui Port. The residence is a white colored building built in a colonial style nicknamed Little White House.

Hobe Fort or Huwei Fort is a historical fort located near Fort Santo Domingo, in Tamsui District.

In the 1880s Imperial China (Qing dynasty) and France fought a war over an area that is today Vietnam. In October 1884 as part of the Keelung Campaign, the French fleet sailed to northern Taiwan where it blockaded the ports of Keelung and Tamsui, and then landed troops at both places. The Chinese managed to turn back the assault at Tamsui, though Keelung fell to the French. Following the war, the Chinese government decided to strengthen Taiwan's coastal defenses. Hobe Fort was finished in 1888 taking western forts as a reference in design. The fort never saw combat and it remains almost entirely intact.

The area is easy to access by the red BTS line and well worth a visit. There are many other things to see and do. A great day trip from the busy city to see another side of Taipei.

TAMSUI OLD STREET TAIPEI TAIWAN Fisherman’s Wharf Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall Nanmen Market

Tamsui Old Street locates around 130 Zhongzheng Road, Tamsui District, New Taipei City, Taiwan and one of the tourist attractions of New Taipei City. Tamsui District sits at the confluence of the Taiwan Strait in the Pacific Ocean and Tamsui River. Tamsui Old Street is located along Tamsui River, the third largest river in Taiwan. Tamsui Old Street is divided into the inner and outer side. The outer street is the golden anchor walkway of Tamsui river coast, while the inner side is a traditional old street lined with bustling shops. There are faithfully traditional pastry shops, groceries and stores selling trendy outfits and toys. The popular foods in the area include fish ball, fried fish crackers, traditionally baked cake, and Granny’s iron eggs, etc. are all must try goodies. In the evening, the beautiful scenery of the sun setting below the ocean horizon can be seen along the golden anchor walkway.
Visitors can take the Taipei MRT red line, Tamsui Xinyi Line and get off at Tamsui Station exit one and take three minutes’ walk to Tamsui Old Street. For my experience, I took MRT red line to come here. I visited Tamsui Church first and bought my favorite food: deep-fried chicken breast for $65 and sweet yam for $40 at a nearby local street vendor. I believed this street vendor priced every food very reasonable. Then back to Tamsui Old Street to buy the famous Granny’s plum juice for $50 and enjoyed the beautiful sunset. Tamsui Metro Station is a two-level, elevated station with an island platform and two exits. The station is situated between the south side of Zhongzheng West Road and west of the Zhongshan-Zhongzheng Road intersection. Restrooms are located inside the main entrance area. The station is heavily used by people looking to visit the sea-side district of Tamsui. It connects Tamsui River, Tamsui Sunset Scenic Area, Riverside Park, Tamsui River Bike Route, Tamsui District Office, Tamsui Old Street, Tamsui Church and Zhongzheng Food Court. The station is also a major local bus station for residents live in Tamsui District. Visitors can take local bus red line 28 to Tamkang University. A Visitor Information Center locates in Tamsui Metro Station will provide foreign language service.

Tamsui, Taiwan🇹🇼 Real Ambience in Taiwan's Most Popular Town (4K HDR)

Tamsui (淡水), also known as Danshui, is a picturesque seaside district in New Taipei City, Taiwan, situated along the Tamsui River and facing the Taiwan Strait. The name Tamsui means fresh water in Chinese, reflecting the district's historical significance as a freshwater port. Despite its modest size, with a population of 189,271 as of February 2023, Tamsui holds a prominent place in Taiwanese history and culture.

Historically, Tamsui was known by various names, including Hoba by the Ketagalan aborigines, which means stream's mouth. The area was a focal point for foreign powers; the Spanish established a settlement here in the 17th century, followed by the Dutch, who built Fort Anthonio, now part of the Fort San Domingo museum complex. Tamsui became a major fishing and trade port during the Qing dynasty, opening to foreign trade in 1862 and becoming the largest port in Taiwan by the mid-19th century.

Canadian medical doctor and missionary George Leslie Mackay significantly impacted Tamsui in the 19th century by establishing Taiwan's first hospitals in Western medicine and formal educational facilities, including Oxford College, now part of Aletheia University.

In the 20th century, Tamsui's importance as a seaport declined due to sediment accumulation in the Tamsui River, shifting the local economy primarily to agriculture. However, Japanese rule (1895–1945) saw Tamsui rise as a local administrative and cultural center. Post-World War II, Tamsui transformed into a tourist destination, further boosted by the completion of the Taipei Metro's Tamsui Line in 1997, leading to the development of riverside parks, markets, and the Fisherman's Wharf.

Taipei Trip 2018 🇹🇼

Taipei officially known as Taipei City, is the capital[a] and a special municipality of Taiwan (officially known as the Republic of China, ROC). Sitting at the northern tip of the island, Taipei City is an enclave of the municipality of New Taipei City. It is about 25 km (16 mi) southwest of the northern port city Keelung. Most of the city is located on the Taipei Basin, an ancient lakebed bounded by the two relatively narrow valleys of the Keelung and Xindian rivers, which join to form the Tamsui River along the city's western border.[6] Formerly known as Taipeh-fu during the Qing era and Taihoku under Japanese rule, Taipei became the capital of Taiwan Province when Taiwan was transferred to the Republic of China by Japan in 1945 and has been the capital of the ROC since 1949, when the Kuomintang lost the mainland to the Communist Party of China in the Chinese Civil War.

The city proper is home to an estimated population of 2,704,810 (2015), forming the core part of the Taipei–Keelung metropolitan area which includes the nearby cities of New Taipei and Keelung with a population of 7,047,559, the 40th most-populous urban area in the world—roughly one-third of Taiwanese citizens live in the metro district. The name Taipei can refer either to the whole metropolitan area or the city proper.
