The Grand Theatre in Crookston, Minnesota is the longest continuously running theater in the US. It originally started out as an opera house, hosting vaudeville and other live performances in 1910.

Brainerd, MN | A 4K City Walking Tour
Located in central Minnesota, along the Mississippi River, is Brainerd. Long known as the home of Paul Bunyan and well-known as Minnesota’s Vacationland. The area that is now Brainerd was formerly Ojibwe territory. Brainerd was first seen by European settlers on Christmas Day in 1805, when Zebulon Pike stopped there while searching for the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Crow Wing Village, a fur and logging community near Fort Ripley, brought settlers to the area in the mid-19th century. Brainerd was the idea of Northern Pacific railroad president John Gregory Smith, who in 1870 named the township after his wife, Anne Eliza Brainerd Smith, and father-in-law, Lawrence Brainerd. The company built a bridge over the Mississippi seven miles north of Crow Wing Village and used the Brainerd station as a machine and car shop, prompting many to move north and abandon Crow Wing. Brainerd was organized as a city on March 6, 1873.

Thief River Falls, Minnesota is a city in the northwest part of the state, about 70 miles south of the Canadian border. It is the county seat of Pennington County. The city has a population of about 8,700 people. Thief River Falls is named after the Thief River, which flows through the city. The city was founded in 1873, and it grew rapidly in the late 19th century due to its location on the railroad. Thief River Falls was a major center for the lumber industry, and it also had a number of other industries, including railroads, coal mining, and manufacturing.

Clan Stewart Castle South West Glasgow Scotland
Tour Scotland Winter travel video of Crookston Castle, a Clan Stewart castle, located in the Pollok area on ancestry visit to the south west Glasgow. The lands of Crookston were bought by Sir Alan Stewart in 1330, and passed to Sir John Stewart of Darnley, in 1361. The Darnley Stewarts replaced the early castle with the present stone structure around 1400. In 1489 the Stewart Earl of Lennox rebelled against James IV. James responded by bringing the cannon Mons Meg from Edinburgh, and bombarding the castle, virtually destroying its western end, and ensuring a quick surrender. In 1544 the castle was besieged and taken by the Earl of Arran and Cardinal Beaton, while the then Earl of Lennox was defending Glasgow Castle. At this time, Crookston was regarded as the principal house of the earls of Lennox. Most famous of the Darnley Stewarts was Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, who was second husband to Mary, Queen of Scots. It may have been at Crookston that the couple were betrothed under a yew tree
Fishing in TRF
You'll find excellent fishing year-round on the rivers. The Red Lake River, in the Thief River Falls area, offers excellent fishing. Whether you’re in waders, a float tube, canoe or just fishing from the bank, the opportunity for walleyes, northern pike, small mouth bass, crappies and a host of other species is great!
Accessing the river is not a problem with two boat landings within the city limits. You can also get to the river through both city parks and below the dam.
Waterfowl and small game hunters coming to the Thief River Falls area should remember to pack a fishing rod. There is a fall run of walleyes in the Red Lake River. Walleyes will move upriver and hold below the dam in October—a jig and minnow is all it takes. With parking lots on both sides of the river and a walkway on the east side, access is easy.
Hunt in the morning, fish the Red Lake River in the afternoon. Visitors to the Thief River Falls area can have the best of both worlds!
