Le Mont-Saint-Michel is an island commune in Normandy, France.
It is located about one kilometre off the country's northwestern coast, at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches and is 100 hectares in size.
As of 2009, the island has a population of 44.
The island has held strategic fortifications since ancient times and since the 8th century AD has been the seat of the monastery from which it draws its name.
The structural composition of the town exemplifies the feudal society that constructed it: on top, God, the abbey and monastery; below, the great halls; then stores and housing; and at the bottom, outside the walls, houses for fishermen and farmers.
Now a rocky tidal island, the Mont occupied dry land in prehistoric times.
As sea levels rose, erosion reshaped the coastal landscape, and several outcrops of granite emerged in the bay, having resisted the wear and tear of the ocean better than the surrounding rocks.
Mont Saint-Michel consists of leucogranite, which solidified from an underground intrusion of molten magma about 525 million years ago, during the Cambrian period, as one of the younger parts of the Mancellian granitic batholith.
The Mont has a circumference of about 960 metres and its highest point is 92 metres above sea level.
The tides can vary greatly, at roughly 14 metres between high and low water marks.
Popularly nicknamed St. Michael in peril of the sea by medieval pilgrims making their way across the flats, the mount can still pose dangers for visitors who avoid the causeway and attempt the hazardous walk across the sands from the neighbouring coast.
Polderisation and occasional flooding have created salt marsh meadows that were found to be ideally suited to grazing sheep.
The well-flavoured meat that results from the diet of the sheep in the salt meadow makes salt meadow lamb, a local specialty that may be found on the menus of restaurants that depend on income from the many visitors to the mount.
One of France's most recognizable landmarks, visited by more than 3 million people each year, Mont Saint-Michel and its bay are on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
Over 60 buildings within the commune are protected in France as monuments historiques.

Discover Historic Dinan in Brittany!

🇬🇧 Discover the historic town of Dinan in Brittany!
Last June, we crossed the Channel by ferry to Saint-Malo. For this first visit to Brittany, we were based in the Dol-de-Bretagne region, halfway between Saint-Malo and Mont-Saint-Michel.
Just 30 km away was one of Brittany's most beautiful cities: Dinan! A visit to the historic town was a must. On a beautiful sunny day, we choose to explore Dinan and its landmarks.
This video is a (very) short photographic account of our visit!

Places to see in ( Rennes - France )

Places to see in ( Rennes - France )

Rennes is the capital city of Brittany, northwest France. It's known for its medieval half-timbered houses and grand Rennes Cathedral. Parc du Thabor includes a rose garden and aviary. South of the Vilaine river, the Musée des Beaux-arts displays works by Botticelli, Rubens and Picasso. The Champs Libres cultural center houses the Musée de Bretagne (Brittany Museum) and Espace des Sciences, featuring a planetarium.

Rennes is not often mentioned on tourist guides but this medium size town is well worth a visit. It has more than 200,000 inhabitants, of whom about 60,000 are students. This gives the town a vibrant nightlife. Some streets, such as the Rue Saint Michel, have only bars on both sides. (The locals actually call Rue Saint Michel la rue de la soif, which means Street of Thirst). A stroll down Rue Saint Michel on a Friday or Saturday evening is a very interesting experience indeed. However, if you're really in the mood to faire la fête, celebrate or just have fun in other words, the most exciting night on Rue de la Soif would be the Jeudi Soir, Thursday nights, during the school year. Jeudi Soir is the night when bars are most often packed to the brim with students. The sights on Thursday nights out on the town are very memorable and interesting.

Rennes is particularly nice in early July, during the Festival des Tombées de la Nuit. Its streets are then full of people enjoying the free street entertainment and eating or drinking at the terraces of the restaurants and cafés. Rennes used to be virtually empty after the 15th of July, as most of its inhabitants were migrating to the coast until the 15th August. In recent years, this trend seems to have stopped and Rennes's terraces and cafes are now bustling throughout the year.

One highlight of Rennes, if you're after natural beauty and tranquility, is the Thabor. This park has a stunning collection of plantlife, including a large bed of hundreds of species of roses, tropical, African and European trees, other beautiful and rare plants, and offers the traveller a chance to see some budgies. Alot else to see in Rennes such as :

Le Parlement
Maison à colombages (half-timbered houses)
Mont Saint-Michel
Saint-Malo
Etangs d'Apigné
Dinan
Montfort sur Meu
Cobac Parc

Dinan, the Most Beautiful Town in Brittany? – Seas the Day (Ep31)

It's been argued for a long time that Dinan is the most beautiful town in the whole of Brittany. We thought we should go and have a look ourselves and make our own minds up. Beautiful, yes but the most beautiful, we're not sure, but we did have a lovely time.

If you’ve seen our previous videos, you’ll see we tried visit Dinan towards Christmas to have a look at their spectacular Christmas market, but we didn’t get there. We are happy we waited as there is so much to see and lots of history to explore.

Join us on our journey as we check out the ramparts, château, belfry, churches, very steep roads and beautiful cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses. This was a wonderful place to go and there’s something new to see around every corner and down every alleyway.

Places to see in ( Dinan - France ) Château de Dinan

Places to see in ( Dinan - France ) Château de Dinan

The Château de Dinan consists of a keep, in the town of Dinan, in the Côtes-d'Armor département of the Brittany region of France. The keep and the gate are part of the 2,600 metres (8,500 ft) of medieval ramparts which still surround the old town. It is called Donjon de la duchesse Anne (Keep of the Duchess Anne), and stands 111 feet (34m) high near the Saint Louis gate.

John V, Duke of Brittany built the keep in 1382-1383. The keep is formed by a union of two tall circular towers; a moat and drawbridge divides the keep from the outside of the ramparts as well as from the inside of the city, providing a stronghold both against outsiders and from the townspeople themselves. Extensive machicolations overhang the wall head providing defensive coverage of the base of the tower.

The castle was listed for protection as a monument historique in 1886. It is owned by the commune and houses the local museum.
The castle, adjoining the city but independent of it, could both provide defence and compel submission in case of revolt: it was a substantial political symbol. The castle, attached to the city ramparts, was enlarged in 1595–1598 by the Duc de Mercoeur through the annexation of the fortified 13th-century Porte du Guichet and the artillery Tour de Coëtquen (built 1474), both of which were part of the city walls; this ensemble forms the existing castle. The building was altered between 1693 and 1711 by the military engineer Garanjeau (in particular, the roof was suppressed and replaced by a terrace) and then by the Monuments Historiques and the city of Dinan, which are now responsible for its preservation.

The main part of John of Montfort’s castle, built by Etienne le Tur and in use by 1384, comprises a massive donjon, 34 m high. Its intricate plan is composed of two great round towers joined by a slightly projecting forebuilding, to which the principal entrance, defended by a drawbridge, opens on the ground floor. The donjon has five storeys, crowned by a parapet walk with machicolation decorated with trefoils and supported on long, elegant corbels; a sixth storey, covered with slate, formerly made up the upper part of the structure.

On the opposite side to the projecting entrance block the donjon dominated a very small courtyard, which was provided with a postern and drawbridge leading to the outside and a well that controlled a complex system of water supply. While the exterior of the Dinan Castle has a fortified appearance, the interior is primarily residential. The floors are linked by a continuous spiral staircase.

Start with Saint-Malo, a beautiful walled city on the coast. Known for its pirate history and stunning ocean views, Saint-Malo invites you to walk along its ramparts and visit Fort National. This is a fantastic introduction to Brittany’s maritime culture and is also home to amazing seafood, especially the local oysters.

Further west, Brest is a city with strong ties to Brittany’s naval heritage. Visit Oceanopolis, an ocean discovery center, and then head to Pointe Saint-Mathieu for scenic cliffs and a historic lighthouse. It’s a great spot to appreciate Brittany’s coastal landscape.

Quimper is another essential stop in Brittany. Known for its stunning Gothic Quimper Cathedral and its vibrant local markets, Quimper embodies Brittany’s Celtic roots. Here, you can explore the Henriot Faience Museum to learn about the region's traditional pottery and sample Brittany’s famous crepes.

Next, visit Carnac to see the Carnac Stones—a mysterious megalithic site with over 3,000 ancient standing stones. It’s one of the most important archaeological sites in Brittany and offers a unique look into the region's ancient past.

Dinan is a medieval town in Brittany with cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and the Dinan Castle overlooking the Rance River. The quaint atmosphere of Dinan makes it one of Brittany’s most charming stops.

Don’t miss the Pink Granite Coast for its distinctive rock formations and scenic beaches around Perros-Guirec. Known for the striking pink hue of the rocks, this coastline is ideal for hiking and captures Brittany’s rugged beauty.

For nature lovers, Presqu'île de Crozon in the Finistère region is a must-see. This peninsula in Brittany features dramatic cliffs, turquoise coves, and picturesque trails, especially around Pointe de Pen-Hir.

Château de Combourg

The Château de Combourg, located in the commune of Combourg in Brittany, France, is a historic castle dating back to the 11th century. This imposing fortress, with its distinctive towers and crenellated walls, was extensively remodeled in the 14th and 15th centuries, embodying the medieval architectural style. The château is famously associated with the French writer François-René de Chateaubriand, who spent part of his childhood there and credited the castle with influencing his literary work. Surrounded by a picturesque landscape, including a large pond and lush gardens, Château de Combourg offers a glimpse into medieval life and the romanticism of the 19th century. Today, it is open to the public for guided tours, allowing visitors to explore its richly furnished rooms, historical artifacts, and learn about its storied past.

Dinan. The most beautiful well-preserved medieval town in Brittany - France 🇫🇷

Dinan is a wonderful old town perched high above the River Rance. Still possessed of much of its medieval fortifications and featuring a powerful Ducal castle which shelter a network of medieval streets lined with ancient buildings. Timber framed buildings lean over narrow alleys and streets and grand churches fill leafy squares. The church of Saint Malo features a wonderful collection of windows which show colourful scenes from the history of the town. My favourite street is the Rue de Jerzoual which descends through the city walls to the Port on the River Rance. We enjoy takinga riverside path from here, upstream, to the hamlet of Lehon. Here, beside the meadows, sits an ancient Abbey. A quiet pause here is followed by a climb back to town and a walk into a park on the battlements which overlook the port. Another wonderful French city to enjoy.

Brittany is a region in Northern France filled with medieval castles and towns. For our roadtrip, we stay mostly on the Eastern side of the region, but there is plenty more to explore on the West coast too.
Vitre is one of the finest examples of medieval towns that have been relatively well-preserved from the days when the region passed back and forth between the French and the English settlers. Victor Hugo listed it in ‘The Hunchback Of Notre Dame’ as one of only four towns in Europe he believed to contain a complete, homogenous Gothic town centre. The castle actually contains its town hall, so if you ever need to see the mayor of Vitre, you have to go to his chambers inside the castle walls. Which is normal for the 21st century, right?
Fougeres contains one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Built to defend the region from the French, it’s a pretty impressive structure. But they failed.
What do you mean?
Well it’s in France. So how can you defend something French from being French?
Well it may be France now, but Brittany is a region that has sought independence in the past. Though that’s unlikely to ever happen, modern Bretons are Breton first, French second. Just like this castle.
So I had to try Breton food while we were there. Like moules frites. Which is mussels. And Far Breton. Which is a custardy cake with dates. And not the best cake I’ve eaten in France. And cidre. Still, strong cider.
The most famous site on our trip is undoubtedly the Mont Saint Michel. An abbey in a castle on an island in a tidal estuary, the Mont is quite an imposingly beautiful spectacle. Although you can now access it around the clock, it was historically only accessible on foot at low tide. And I wouldn’t advise trying to find your own way there across the river delta, because there’s quick sand, deep mud and plenty of flesh-eating snails.
Really?
No. Just mud. While it’s quite the climb to the top of the Mont, the tightly packed streets and sweeping vistas across the bay make it absolutely worth the walk.
Hang on, isn’t the Mont Saint Michel actually in Normandy?
Well that depends who you ask. A portion of the border is the Couesnon River which has altered its course over the years and sometimes flows to the left of the Mont and sometimes to the right.
So it depends which way the river is flowing that day?
Something like that.
At the top is the eleventh century abbey, which was built by an architect who clearly wanted to punish his workers. Imagine having to carry all that rock up there! The logistics of building something massive so high was also a bit of a challenge. Scores of crypts and underground chapels had to be built to support the weight of the abbey sitting above it. In fact, there’s so many supportive structures to keep the abbey at the top, that the Mont Saint Michel is now actually more St Michel than mont.
Sitting on the north Breton coast, Saint Malo is a fortified town, with tightly packed streets crammed inside imposing town walls. Though heavily bombarded in World War 2, the city retains much of its historic charm, even if it is remarkably dark for a seaside town. Saint Malo was historically an autonomous city and was even an independent city state at one stage. Renowned for being the home of numerous pirates! Known as Corsairs, the city was a perfect hiding place where they could sail into a sheltered port and hide from the authorities in its meandering streets. But in the 16th and 17th centuries they didn’t even need to hide! With official approval from the French king who would take a cut of their booty, they would sail the Atlantic and pillage whatever they could from English, Dutch or Portuguese ships they encountered. And Saint Malo would be where they would bring their treasure! The best thing about the city today is undoubtedly its walls, which you can walk entirely around, which is about 2km in total.

Mount Saint Micheal is a Majestic Place in Normandy France. #travel #satisfying #inspirational

Mont-Saint-Michel (French pronunciation: [lə mɔ̃ sɛ̃ miʃɛl]; Norman: Mont Saint Miché; English: Saint Michael's Mount) is a tidal island and mainland commune in Normandy, France.
Le Mont-Saint-Michel
Coordinates: 48°38′10″N 1°30′40″W
Country France
Region Normandy
Department Manche
Arrondissement Avranches
CantonPontorson
Intercommunality
CA Mont-Saint-Michel-Normandie
The island lies approximately one kilometre (one-half nautical mile) off the country's north-western coast, at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches and is 7 hectares (17 acres) in area. The mainland part of the commune is 393 hectares (971 acres) in area so that the total surface of the commune is 400 hectares (990 acres). As of 2019, the island had a population of 29.

The commune's position—on an island just a few hundred metres from land—made it accessible at low tide to the many pilgrims to its abbey, but defensible as an incoming tide stranded, drove off, or drowned would-be assailants. The island remained unconquered during the Hundred Years' War; a small garrison fended off a full attack by the English in 1433. Louis XI recognised the reverse benefits of its natural defence and turned it into a prison. The abbey was used regularly as a prison during the Ancien Régime.

Mont-Saint-Michel and its surrounding bay were inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979 for its unique aesthetic and importance as a Catholic site. It is visited by more than three million people each year. Over 60 buildings within the commune are protected in France as monuments historiques.
